perfectlymcd:
Mimsy hated to admit it, but she was afraid of this woman. She had been around powerful people before, mainly her mother, but Madam Mim was not nearly so cool and collected as this lady. With her mother, you could always see the buildup, know when she was preparing to do something. But the Enchantress was different. Frighteningly different.
The girl met the sorceress’ eyes for a moment, but avoided them, focusing instead on a tree branch above her. She swatted the branch gently, and it bent away and then back, where she caught it again and repeated. The motion soothed her.
“I don’t want to learn magic,” Swat, “I told you,” Catch. “ I already have magic,” Swat. “I just want to-” The branch returned to her hand, but at the very moment it did, it withered and shriveled until it was nothing but a fine black dust. Instinctively, she backed away, bringing her hands towards her body, “Control it.” The young witch looked at the sorceress, a hint of fear in her eyes.
Rhiannon was accustomed to fear, her dark look and occasional intensity drawing that reaction even before the Beast and his evil prison idea. So seeing that familiar spark in Mimsy’s eyes didn’t shock her, the sorceress keeping her distance for the moment as they regarded each other.
The branch crumbling was a surprise, Mimsy’s magic more volatile and potentially dangerous than she’d expected. But it had been hidden for a long time, and now she didn’t know how to give it a healthy outlet, or understand it. Carefully, Rhiannon moved closer to the girl and the shadow she hid in, speaking gently. “Even those of us born with magic must learn magic Mimsy. Control, accessing it, and being able to use it to your will is all a part of learning, and it’s a lifelong process. You’ll be able to control your magic, hopefully within the next month or so if you still wish to train with me, but you’ll always learn new things about magic as you go along. It is a force that can be used for death, or life.” Reaching out, she touched the branch the girl had destroyed and it grew back, alive and restored to it’s original health. Looking at Mimsy, she held out a hand, offering it in friendship to the girl and to show she wasn’t afraid of her power. “I’ll teach you. And I won’t hurt you. You’ve nothing to fear from me.”
