White New Zealand woman attacks Asian woman with a screwdriver in road rage demanding to know if she has a New Zealand driver’s licence
…while her white friends watched and giggled
…and then the police offer the white woman a ‘diversion’ due to hardships that would result from a conviction.
Nobody gives a damn about how this affected the Asian woman’s life, or any justice for her.
A middle aged woman has been punched in the face by a woman wielding a massive screwdriver. The attack happened during a road rage incident in New Zealand’s North Island.
A screaming woman, demanded to know if the Asian driver had a NZ driving licence.
Clad only in a bikini she gesticulated wildly with the screwdriver, before punching the older woman with it still in her hand.
At that point her giggling companions in the car realised she’d gone too far and called for “Jess” to back off. After the video (below) went viral she handed herself into the police, her placid victim has yet to be found.
An 18 year old Hutt Valley [in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital] woman has appeared in court charged in connection with the road rage incident. She’s been given name suppression until she appears in court again on 18 March. source
In the meantime, police have offered her diversion if she pleads guilty
”If she completes diversion the charge will be withdrawn without resulting in a conviction on her list. To be eligible for diversion the offender has to admit guilt…
Her lawyer Marty Robinson opposed media taking pictures in court saying she had received death threats, been assaulted and had things thrown at her house after media picked up on the video.
She had lost two part time jobs and feared she would be unable to get others in the hospitality industry where she had worked.
He said it would cause her extreme hardship for more pictures to be out there. He also asked for name suppression…” source
As usual in New Zealand the story focuses on hard-done-by perpetrator and the damage to their life – not their immigrant victim’s.
How does the assaulted woman and her daughter feel about their attacker getting off, do they feel safe on the road?
Where are their victim impact statements?
What messages does ‘diversion’ send out to other road users who think they have a right to assault anyone who inconveniences them?
Its a sad reflection of New Zealand’s culture of brutality if this young woman walks away from this without consequence.

Come on NZ, pull it together! This is totally unacceptable behaviour and the consequences have been pitiful. This Kiwi says "No!"

Stop Tony Meow is a Chrome extension that replaces pictures of Tony Abbott with cute kittens. Thousands of downloads later, we asked co-creator Dan Nolan a few questions
This just made my life so much better.
Compiled the lovely pics of our new Minister for Women

God help us all
Shoot me in the face
remember that time someone I sort of know said that tony abbott isn’t sexist
I laughed so much
I will always reblog this.

Falling off the wagon....
I haven’t written for some time and I guess it’s because I have fallen off the wagon, which I do need to write about instead of avoiding (and therefore not be accountable for).
I have purchased some new clothes, shoes and a bag. I also brought a gift for a friends new baby that was new. I am still purchasing a lot of used things from op shops, garage sales and online but in all honesty I am sitting on my ass, in the dust, looking up at the wagon I fell off. Lets be real here.
Why? I had 5 full months of sticking to my guns, and it wasn’t hard! I liked it. It became normal. So why the change? Well, I can externalise the causes, shift blame, make excuses, but before I share any reasons I need to preface it with this statement: It was my choice and I am responsible, regardless of what I say next.
OK, so I went back to working full time in my corporate office job and yes, I felt pressure to dress a certain way. I felt a little self conscious of my thrifted skirt and was worried that my cute second hand leather shoes were a bit worn. This may sound trivial, but I was in a more senior role where I was often reminded of being the “role model” and “setting the standard” in many areas, including my presentation.
"Dress the part, be the part, motherfucker." - Proposition Joe, The Wire.
I am aware that a huge amount of people don’t have the privilege of “falling off the wagon” and whipping out a credit card to buy new things if and when they do. Reusing and recycling items for many is a necessity, not some bourgeois hobby.
The more I started to think about this the more I began to feel disillusioned with what I was doing.
I know that there is inherent benefit in not consuming, in creating a set of beliefs not based on materialism and of not seeking fulfillment through “stuff”. I believe this.
I am also aware of how lucky I am to have the choice.
I am aware of people who don’t have the luxury of worrying about “new” versus “used”. I understand that there are people who are just trying to live this life; be heard, survive, make ends meet, be healthy, stay safe, be given their break, their opportunity, their chance. They are trying to live a life with out fear and without being discriminated against because of race, age, sexuality or gender.
So, all things considered, is this “hobby” ridiculous? Yes, it has some meaning in my life and social sphere, but seems trivial in the context of the world around me.
Spent 3 days hiking 23kms up the Wilderness Coast with a legendary group of dudes. We saw whales breaching, wildflowers, climbed rocky headlands, caught fish and foraged for mussels. Epic adventure! #wildernesscoast #hiking #nature #camping #adventures (at Wilderness Coast, Far East Gippsland, Australia). This trip was my first time breaking my “no new stuff” rule in the past 4 months. Multi-day hiking is totally amazing, but pretty gear-intensive when setting yourself up. I was lucky to borrow a lot of things from my more experienced friends (hiking pack, tent, lightweight sleeping bag, trangier). I also scored a lot of great hiking clothes from Savers and a pair of used hiking boots. The new things that I got from Aussie Disposals was a water bladder, pack cover for the rain and a tarpaulin. I think they were all practical things that will get a lot of use from, but it does feel weird to break my self imposed rules! Photo courtesy of Warwick Sprawson. I was too busy sweating to use my camera.
Recent jewellery purchases, all secondhand and mostly from eBay. The 8 pairs of vintage earrings were under $10. The House of Harlow black and pearl necklace $5. The Bakelite tortoiseshell necklace and bracelet are from the '80s and were $7. The snake eye opal/starburst necklace was from an estate and was $10. The lovely lady included a handwritten note telling me that the opal had been cut from the Tom Price mine in Western Australia in 1985. I love history or a back story attached to jewellery and the thought of it being someone else's treasured item at some point in time.
Office Racism
New guy at works first day with the company. He joins an afternoon tea and the conversation turns to Canada and French Canadians.
New Guy: “French Canadians….ugh. I don’t like them.”
Me: “Well that’s a massively sweeping statement. I lived in Canada. I had lots of French Canadian friends in fact.”
New Guy: “…mutters more anti French Canadian sentiments…” Facial expression like he smells something bad.
Seriously? Not only a totally racist viewpoint but enough ego to share it with a brand new group of people (including your new boss) on your FIRST DAY in a new job without any expectation you might offend someone.
Update....this guy ended up getting "let go" from the job. Karma, baby!
The devaluation of the human world grows in direct proportion to the increase in value of the world of things.

I was lucky enough to watch Church of Misery play tonight at The Hi-Fi in Melbourne.
So. Good.
Had a chat to the guitarist outside after the show. Between his broken English and my piss poor Japanese we managed to have a nice chat. I think we used the international language of good vibes.
Records from earlier today. Wasn't sure who Lee Conway was, but at $3 with a cover like that, how could I say no?
