Inde Navarrette by Nick Rasmussen for Schön! Magazine
This is gonna be SO controversial, but I honestly donât think that everyone needs to be represented in EVERY film ever made, there are SO many different types of films with different stories to tell across ALL genres of film. Most writers donât write from a place of âOk I need to put someone from THIS group, THIS group, and THIS group, etc. or else everyone will be offended!â I just feel like it would be so disingenuous for a writer to put someone of whatever identity in a film just because they feel like they âneed toâ in order to appease everyone, which NO ONE can do.
I actually agree with this! Writers shouldnât be adding characters that solely check off representation boxes. Good storytelling comes from authenticity, not obligation, of course.
At the same time, I think itâs important to recognize that Hollywood has historically treated white narratives as the default. The problem isnât that every story needs every identity represented; itâs that when one perspective dominates an industry for decades, story telling becomes limited and repetitive.
Audiences often respond to stories that feel authentic and reflective of the world around them. Thatâs one reason why filmmakers like Jordan Peele has been so successful. His films arenât trying to represent everyoneâthey tell specific stories rooted in particular experiences! But those perspectives have historically been underrepresented, which is part of what makes the work feel so fresh and original. There was a round table talk on YouTube that only had one black writer and the rest was all white, needless to say he was giving everyone heat about how much diversity was in their room. Itâs a very interesting discussion but it goes to show that Hollywood still holds yt voices as their primary.
So, I donât think the goal should be forced representation. The goal should be making space for a wider range of voices and stories and those arenât the same thingsđââïž
An sometimes I think some of the blame does have to do with casting in a way. But I know casting is given very specific context to look for and thatâs another discussion.

Love seeing women with bare faces, short fingernails, practical shoes, comfortable clothing, a full plate, a toothy grin, a relaxed posture. Love love love seeing women comfortable and happy and unselfconscious.
