Title: The Castle of Bentheim Artist: Jacob van Ruisdael (Dutch, 1628/9-1682) Date: 1653 Genre: landscape Period: Dutch Golden Age Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 110.5 cm (43.5 in) high x 144 cm (56.6 in) wide Location: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland
Bentheim is located in Westphalia, near the border between Germany and the Netherlands. Van Ruisdael, who visited the site in the early 1650s and painted it frequently thereafter, exaggerated the height of the hill on which the castle stands to make the view more dramatic.
