Maia raised an eyebrow at Alfie’s comment, a mix of amusement and exasperation flashing in her eyes. "A restraining order, really? And here I thought I’d at least get a thank you for the entertainment," she quipped, watching him as he moved around the shop. Despite everything, there was still that undeniable spark—an attraction that had always been there, even if it was now laced with a touch of bitterness.

She folded her arms, leaning against the counter as she took in his words. "Tragic circumstances, sure. But if anyone knows how to make the best of a messy situation, it’s you," she added with a small smile. When he mentioned the inheritance, her expression softened, and she nodded. His condolences did mean a lot. "Yeah, my grandmother. She was the heart of this place, so it’s a bit surreal running it now. But thank you."

When Alfie handed over the list, Maia took it with a curious glance. "Your little sister? That’s sweet. I didn’t know you were the party-planning type, but then again, I guess you always were full of surprises," she teased lightly. She scanned the list of approved gifts and vendors, nodding as she recognized a few names. "You’re in luck, we’ve got some great options here that’ll definitely make those gift bags stand out. I’ll help you pick out something perfect." She paused, looking up at him with a smirk. "Just don’t expect a discount because of old times’ sake."

Alfie scoffed at her quip and smiled, he had always like Maia's wittiness. "You can have a thank you for keeping me on my toes and keeping my life interesting." He replied. In truth he didn't hate Maia or even dislike her. Yes, they had ended on terrible terms, but how could he hate someone he was this drawn to? He continued to circle the shop, his hand brushing against the odd trinket as his gaze flickered to and from Maia.

"It's true, I've taken so many L's recently this one hardly computes." He said with a scoff. Maia turning up again was truly the least of his problems. "I'm sure she's happy you're looking after the shop. And... despite... everything you have exceptional taste. And it is good to see you - kind of."

Genie was a duplicitous user just like her older brother, so he appreciated the means in which she secured his house as a party pad. What she had failed to mention when she asked him was that she was banned from throwing parties at home. He was proud however that his little sister had become infamous for throwing ragers. "She's a little witch and I had no choice." He said before the beginnings of an idea flashed into his mind. Leaning against the cash desk, Alfie looked at Maia with a boyish grin. It was going to be a hard sell, and probably an expensive one, but Alfie was known to pay for convenience.

"How about this," Alfie opened his wallet, placing his black card down and sliding towards Maia. "You do me a favour, make my life infinitely easier and make me fifteen dream gift bags I'll take you out for a nice dinner."

"America's all too big, isn't it? We can drive hours and only just finally be out of California." She leans forward, intently listening and wholly interested. It isn't like she's spent a lot of time traveling far enough for it to become some mesmerizing story. "Like New York? A melting pot, right? It would make sense. I see a lot about how British food is bland, but I haven't been there to try it myself."

Stereotypes can always be challenged.

"Is small talk not your thing?" Joey gives him a teasing look, reaching for the glass only just dropped off by their server. Her eyes never leave Alfie's face, though. "California is it's own planet. But when you're born and raised here, it's hard to stay away from it forever." Santa Monica might be in her rearview, but California is still all around.

"Yes, in a way. I worked in some clubs in Santa Monica, but I needed something different. I decided to move out here, where it's smaller and quieter, to try and pave my own road. Aurora Bay is nice, not as busy as Santa Monica, that's for sure. But Beverly Hills?"

Los Angeles is a place she set foot in for one person, and she hasn't been there since. Wherever Scott may be - maybe he went back home. It's not worth wondering. "Did you have any celebrity neighbors?"

It was only when Alfie moved back to California did he realise just how incredible it was, the state and the country as a whole, "It's basically a continent in itself. The difference in cultures is so vast, I'm surprised we all speak the same language - well most of us at least." He added, remembering his own Spanish speaking ability precisely because California was so multicultural.

His memory took him back to the incredible food he had had in London. From tiny Ethiopian injera takeaways up several flights of stairs, to Caribbean food trucks and high-end Mediterranean restaurants. "There's every type of food imaginable in London, every country and culture has their own space - it's amazing really." He spoke fondly,

It was a fair stereotype. Some of the food he had eaten in England was genuinely diabolical but for the most part it was edible and even had the potential to be delicious. "I mean they have their roast dinners, fish and chips and other less than great things that I had to get used to but its not bad. A solid six and a half out of ten."

Alfie loved small talk, if anything he loved small talk a bit too much. His youngest sister had called him a yapatron the other day - whatever that meant. "No I do, but I'm always conscious of over talking, especially on dates. I've heard that it's a thing that men do a lot." He said with a small, almost shy smile, "There really is no place like it. It always calls you back."

It was a question he got a lot, and one he usually preferred not to answer. He knew a lot of famous people when he was younger, and a lot of people grew up and went to school with also entered the limelight. For him 'celebrity' was normal, it was only when he was far away from it did he realise it was the opposite. "A few but it was mostly just producers, execs, reality tv stars and ceos and other big wigs in the entertainment or sports industry." Which was true, even his family fell into one or two of those categories.

Ramsey knew that as soon as she calmed down, she was gonna probably panic even more than she already was in the inside. She had seen that things were probably going to be okay but the situation and still had her on edge and she let out a sign to try to catch her breath.

He was contemplating which deli to go to when the accident happened, "Don't worry about me, it's more important that you're in a good space." As they took a seat, Alfie extended out his hand for the woman to shake, "I'm Alfie by the way."

"C'mon, don't be a bitch about it. You know as well as I, you're little heart will heal, you'll go find yourself another pretty thing - why add more to your plate. It's not like you're skipping mortgage payments." It makes sense to avoid the hassle, and Alfie has been more of the romantic between them. Bad choices aside, that is, Aeris can't see him being single forever.

He takes a glance around the house, unenthused by the conversation itself. He'd never been good at those, had he? All he can think is 'bachelor pad', 'parties', and a nice house to impress anyone he brings home. Aeris shrugs, bringing his attention back to Alfie with narrowed eyes.

"Fuck you, no I'm not. It's not my fault she thought we were something, and I wasn't going to tell her to stop giving me food or cleaning up after me." The duplex almost felt like they cohabited close enough it was a home just with two big bedrooms, and okay, it was kinda domestic in many ways, but Aeris never asked. "It was fun, then she made it complicated." The moment that 'L' word dropped from her mouth, Aeris short-circuited.

He tilts his head, thoughtful. "If you're looking to be nagged and yelled at, she's single. Want me to ask?"

There is a lack of seriousness behind it, and the tequila burns his throat is a way that's welcomed. "Nope. Won't catch me dead there. Also, fuck you times two, I wasn't either of those, Alfie. Just hop on Tinder and find a date to bring. Or else, you're gonna have to kill me and drag my corpse, because there's no way I'm going."

"Thank you for your kind and delicate response to my emotional distress Aeris, I knew I could count on you." Alfie spoke with a flat tone and rolled his eyes before sipping on the tequila again. He hated to say it, but Aeris was completely correct, still, Alfie would never admit that out loud.

Alfie let out a deep, slightly exasperated at the way Aeris spoke about Lorna. He understood why his friend behaved the way that he did, hell, that was Alfie before he had met Hecate. But Alfie wanted Aeris to be better than him, and it started with this, "Well, maybe you should consider the possibility that you two definitely are a thing and make peace with it."

Pouring more tequila out for himself and Aeris, Alfie shrugged, "It's okay to be happy bro."

He let out a loud, obnoxious, bark of laughter when Aeris mentioned setting him up with Lorna. "I think Aeris, even if you'd never admit it, you'd rather die than watch me date Lorna."

'Sometimes all your effort isn't enough' is said so casually for something that, Summer thinks, is really kind of a brutally sad truth about the world.

"Can you tell?" she jokes, in answer to his question. "It's really hard stuff like, harder than I was anticipating honestly, but yeah, I love my classes, I'm so excited for the fall semester to start, I have a lot of cool courses coming up. There were times when Alfie wished he had done a degree in something he really loved and was passionate about as a teenager, the first few years of medical school were a slog, to put it in a nice way. "It's good that you're enjoying your classes. There's literally nothing worse than being suck in a shitty class for a semester. Not sure I'd call epistemology cool, but I can't imagine you would have considered my metabolism and endocrinology modules as riveting as I did."

Seeing this attractive man in front of her smiling after what they both had just witnessed made Emira feel a little better...a little more at ease, though the image of the accident was gonna be etched into her brain for a while. Her face somewhat softened and she nodded to his words. Emira knew that she was shook up as she wasn't immediately flirting with him.

"To keep you on your toes, huh?" She asked with a raised eyebrow, assuming he worked as an EMT or a doctor. His next words made her feel a little better, hoping that the man in the accident wasn't going to remember much and that he was going to be okay. "Are you an EMT or a doctor? You sure look confident out here," she said, wanting to say sexy as well but she was going to save that for later. "I'm Emira by the way, Emira Dursun. Thank you for checking on me, even if it's just a part of your job that comes naturally." @rhxdes

"No days off, ever it would seem." Alfie said with a smile, even if today was supposed to be his day off. One of Alfie's favourite things about being a doctor was how impressed people were when he told him, especially women. "A doctor, cardiologist to be specific but I did a few years in the ER before specialising. I liked the pressure." Which was true, a place where the stakes were high and he was in command is where he truly flourished. "Alfie, Alfie Rhodes. It's nice to meet you Emira. That's a beautiful name." Emira. He liked the way her name sounded, a beautiful name for a beautiful woman. He was almost grateful for the emergency. "It's not a problem. I wouldn't be a good doctor, or a good person if I didn't." He came natural to him. "I feel like I've seen you around before, have you lived in Aurora Bay for long?"

A snort when he said her comment was a bit ominous without context. "Hence why I added it." Erica mused, a smirk tugging up the corners of her lips. Not only had she worked on ranches, but had spent a good part of her young adulthood at rodeos, so had seen the worst of fast-paced injuries when it came to barrel racing or bull riding. More than a few times, competitors had been removed from the ring by ambulance. A casual shrug when he asked how she got to Aurora Bay. "Got family here. Grew up here." The rest was a long story that she really didn't want to get into. "You?" @rhxdes

"Similar." Alfie replied. Whilst Alfie didn't particularly care for his extended family, he missed his sisters more than anything when he was in England. "I have family in LA but didn't feel like moving back there when I came back to the US - I was in England for about twelve years and missed the sun - and lower taxes ." He added with a small laugh. "Aurora Bay was next best thing."

"In real life," Jasper replied grimly. "And, yes, it wasn't at all pleasant. A light technician had to go for counselling afterwards. The show had only been on for four days, but they had to cancel it.”

It wasn’t often Jasper spoke of that incident. And for good reason. But the younger man he was talking to could clearly handle something so jarring. It was a sad evening and Jasper could do no more than offer his condolences to the actor’s widow and to send her flowers every year on the anniversary of her husband’s death to let her know he was still thought of and that she was too.

“But really it’s always a pleasure to meet my fans,” he then said chirpily, switching the subject. “I’m surprised I still have them! If your father is local, I’d be happy to send him an autograph, or he’d be more than welcome to come and see me at my hotel. I suppose that answers your question, though: I own the Seascape Hotel. I bought it eight years ago after I retired from acting. So, no, unfortunately that film isn’t getting a sequel. At least not with me in it. I fell in love with Aurora Bay when we filmed on location here and I’d thought about it ever since… living here is one decision I’ll never regret.”

Giving up acting, even though it was the right thing to do, had been the hardest decision Jasper had ever made. At the height of his career, he never thought he’d retire from it let alone so soon and ever now and then the dark thought of ‘what if I made a huge mistake?’ lingered in his mind. But then he looked out of the window at the beautiful beach, the sparkling waters, and the hotel guests having fun and knew he was wrong to doubt himself. However, he wouldn’t be opposed to returning to acting if the right role for him was there.

“So, you’re a cardiologist?” Jasper then piped up. “Well, that is impressive. I imagine it’s tough but rewarding work. If that woman you helped just now had a heart attack she was in the best hands… Oh, I am sorry. I didn’t catch your name. It’s hard to do introductions when everybody knows you, but you don’t know everyone else.”

"I'm sorry you experienced that, it must have been difficult. Thank you for sharing that with me." Whenever Alfie told people what he did for a living, if they had a particularly difficult or traumatic experience they always shared it with him. There was something so human about the recurring experience.

"Legends will always have fans, there's no need to be humble you're in California after all." Alfie had been born and raised in the state, his experiences with actors, musicians, sports people were regular and almost always friendly. "No, my dad lives in New York now, he grew up there and I don't think he ever got used to the West Coast. Maybe he'd come visit more often if I tempted him with a drink with Jasper Morgan." Alfie said with a laugh.

"It is hard but rewarding work. I couldn't see myself doing anything else." Alfie offered the older man his hand, "Alfie, Alfie Rhodes. It's genuinely a pleasure to meet you. How are you finding managing the hotel?"

his shoulders peaked and threatened to pierce right through his ears the second he heard that not-so-familiar voice. francis' fingers locked and he fumbled with his phone as he desperately tried to keep it from flopping to the floor. a startled bark of laughter joined the musical sound of glass atop wood as francis quickly placed his phone in his back-pocket with one hand and grasped at his whiskey-sour with the other. he looked up, and there alfie was — in a suit, no less.

he looked his step-brother up and down. he couldn't help it. actually, he felt a weird sense of relief at the sight. he would never admit it out loud, but alfie looked like a clown. sure, every man in francis' periphery was undressing, licking, and swallowing him with their eyes, but whole appearance, to francis, felt like if christ himself descended upon a crowd of harlots: out of place, welcome by some, distrusted by others.

for francis, the latter wrapped around his heart like a chain and pierced through an aorta.

"no, i don't think you stick out like a sore thumb," he spoke after a deep swig of his sour, "the suit is — well, i think it's definitely impressive. you're a flame, they're the moths, but i think you're more of a butterfly man, right?"

he had begun to laugh, but the laughter turned to bile in his throat. he swallowed it down swiftly — it was a welcomed punishment. he had flaked more than a freshly baked puff (would alfie have ever referred to francis as a puff? that's what they call gay men overseas, right? no, he quickly swallowed that alongside the bile. his step-brother would never). francis didn't know what else to say to that, so he didn't say anything at all. he simply watched as alfie ordered a drink, the same as him. he simply listened as alfie used words that put him even more out of his depth than he probably could ever conceive.

then, alfie broke through by asking something so mundane, so simple, so easy that, if he did not answer, francis might as well don a jester's hat and sing about the camptown races.

"oh, i'm alright. i'm as alright as someone can be when they — well, no, i'm as alright as someone can be, period. i'm fine." he stuttered. he felt his tongue swallow itself underneath the weight of his own self-loathing and, for a moment, francis considered just walking right out the door. he could embrace the polluted night air, feel the embrace of a bottle of wine at home, relish the still air of his condo be broken by the bass of his record player. he could do all of this, but, instead, he tried again:

"i'm very sorry for flaking the last two times, alfie. i don't really have any excuses. i could make them up, yes, but i don't really have the strength for that. i just... i just am sorry. i don't really know what to do in this situation, but i just don't want you to think that i'm going to continue to sit here and not apologize for having been a flake."

he took another deep sip and continued speaking before his lips even left the glass.

"i'm happy you're here, i'm happy you're here in the family, you know. i just don't particularly know how to show it," he said in a single breath before stopping and waiting. just waiting. there wasn't anything else he could do — well, actually:

"oh, and how are you?"

"francis you're a terrible liar." alfie declared before shaking his head at the man in front of him. alfie's version of casual was a linen suit with tapered trousers and he didn't believe men should wear jeans past adolescence unless they were manual labourers. nevertheless, the vast majority of the world disagreed with him, so he was unfortunately surrounded by men who perpetually dressed like teenagers. as he shuffled slightly on the slightly sticky bar stool, leaning his arm on the slightly sticky bar he made a mental note to have the linen suit sent off to be dry cleaned.

"and full of compliments it would seem." alfie perked up a little, preening at the compliment, his eyes wandering the room, snatching the attention of a handful of men before landing back on francis. "they like looking at me because i'm obviously straight. it feels counterintuitive to me but who am i to question gay culture."

alfie frowned at francis as he began to ramble about... how he was? what was wrong? maybe something else entirely. alfie couldn't be sure and so he placed a finger on the bridge of his nose and let out a single exhale. "what on earth does that mean? alright as someone can be is hardly an answer."

"i'm over it already francis, i just wanted to watch you squirm for a bit but it turns out you're a perpetual fidgeting ball of self-deprecation. was there any particular reason why you flaked, or did you just decide last minute you didn't want to come?" he wouldn't be annoyed if it was the latter, if there was something alfie did often, it was cancelling on people last minute.

brushing a finger down his short glass, swirling patterns with the condensation alfie let out a single, humourless laugh when francis mentioned their obscenely large blended family. alfie had no thoughts when his mother told him she was getting remarried, however when she told him that he would be acquiring seven new siblings it became a problem. "i'm sure you are."

"i'm fine." he decided after a moment of contemplation, "i've mostly been busy with work, my mentor is retiring so we're thro|wing a surprise party which hasn't been the most enjoyable experience. i suggested just hiring an event planner but apparently it'd be more personal if we did it."
