make it out alive. she could do that. simple enough. her mind was flooded with plans, escape plans, rescue plans, destruction plans. she was practically swimming in different strategies she could work out. however, it was rhy’s voice, and impulse that eventually won out.
she rose into the air, the bite of the winds seeming extra harsh today, almost like they were fighting against her control. she bit back a course, willing it to raise her further, to the roof of the cabin. she saw rhys below her, and was suddenly more frightened of him than the monsters pouring in. he seemed so… in his element, meanwhile sam was incredibly out of hers. she tried to shake off the image of his laugh, the sound practically echoing across the cabin walls. she saw her chance to exit the cabin and took it. she rose higher in the sky, winds protesting, but eventually complying.
she didn’t have the mental capacity to concentrate on him, the winds, and a bolt. she just couldn’t. letting rhys off her mind, however much it pained her to leave him on his own, she knew he could handle it. the winds rushed around her more feverishly, amplifying the situation at hand. the sky, already dark from night’s cover, darkened more. a cloud covered the moon, the only light sources now coming from the lamps inside the cabin. thunder crackled, hair raised on her arms and the back of her neck.
then, everything happened at once. there was a searing pain in her leg. opening her eyes to find the culprit, she saw rhys come rolling out of the cabin. ‘now, sam!’ she could practically hear her father in her ears. the monster that had managed to jump, an incredible feat to make it to this height, was pulling her down. it’s claws were embedded in her leg, rapidly increasing the speed of her fall.
then, she let everything go. lightening filled camp with it’s light. her eyes were closed, a scream ripped form her throat (whether form pain, or from exhaustion, she didn’t know). she heard the crack, felt the thud of the ground. then, everything turned black.
There was a wildness to Rhys as he saw the lightning slam down, frying the monsters and making his hair stand on end. He saw her above, wind whipping her hair , her mouth open in a scream but it was snatched by the near-deafening boom of the lightning she cast down. He shielded his eyes as the brightness blinded him and when he finally blinked out the spots of light in his eyes, to look at Sam again, she was hurtling to the ground. Without thinking the older demigod dashed forward, slamming into her before she could hit the ground. The force had him tripping, falling and rolling with Sam in a protective embrace. When they stopped rolling, when the roars of the monsters were distant, he pulled back to look at Sam, her eyes closed.
“ Sam? ” He patted her cheek as if she were pulling prank on him and then panic seized him and he grit his teeth, breathing coming out harsh as he tried to get his heart to stop thundering so loud so he could hear if she were breathing. His fingers pressed to her pulse point and when he felt the steady rhythm of her heart, only then, did he loose a breath of relief. Other demigods approached them, he recognized one to be of Apollo, and they started barking at him to let them help. He almost didn’t let them touch her but for the gentle hands that pulled his arms away, while sunlight filled the air around them, soothing and healing. He let them take her and stood, shoving and blocking the swell of emotions he’d felt at seeing her fall out of the sky and nearly hit the ground. He wasn’t going to care about that now, she was alive and being taken care of but he could still hear screaming in the distance, he was still needed somewhere else. So he left her in their care, bolting towards the chaos of the rest of the camp.
