her father is a highly regarded agricultural and environmental engineer who has had an incredibly successful career. he met her mother in the earlier days, a twenty-five-year-old graduate student who had graciously taken a TA position…only to fall in love with an undergrad. they spent almost two semesters together before she had given him the earth-shattering news that she was three months pregnant. he wanted to marry her, based on principle he supposed, but zelda’s mother was the first woman he had ever been so sure of, it didn’t seem right not to get married. his intuition wasn’t perfect, though, because the young mother wasn't prepared for all of the responsibility--a year into zelda’s life, her mother left them and they never heard from her again.
when zelda was seven, an accident flipped her entire world upside down. she was on vacation with her father, in new hampshire to be exact. they were spending a summer away in a cabin to just get out and enjoy some fresh air together (ok maybe her father was really working on a study with some colleagues up there, but he always made time for the two of them) and maybe have a few adventures along the way. on a particularly sunny afternoon, they were driving back to their summer house from lost river gorge after a day of hiking and climbing and squeezing their way through boulder caves. one second, they were smooth sailing down a highway, singing along to the radio (he had one of his favorites playing…“more” by bobby darin, she thinks) and the next, they were swerving off-road, flipping into a ditch. zelda and her dad were rushed to the hospital, they were forced to amputate below the knee of her left leg, which had been crushed in the crash. her father underwent head trauma, permanent damage to his hearing.
her grandmother would visit as much as she could while zelda and her father were in rehabilitation, helping her through her procedures and getting her back onto her feet. she was there through her whole venture with getting a prosthetic and taught her how best to move and adapt. all she wanted to do was run again, jump, climb…like she used to. it was really difficult for her to come to terms with her disability, especially being so young, but she learned a lot about herself and how to come out of it a stronger and more understanding person. zelda is still very close with her grandmother!
has difficulty remembering names/faces sometimes so a lot of people have some kind of plant associated with them in her brain, usually based on first impressions
she is super capable and like LOVES intense physical workouts/training both with and without her prosthesis when possible. her BIGGEST PET PEEVE IN THE WORLD is when people want to be super gentle with her or treat her like she can’t do something because of her disability
leftist until the day she dies
intersectional feminist and activist af…you will see her at any and all marches. be the change u wish to see in the world.
she tries to be a real optimist and values kindness, which means she can be a smidge too patient with people who don’t always have her best interest at heart
vegetarian
AVID chapstick enthusiast
