Rhythm Natives

In the early ’00s, the San Fernando Valley became the meeting grounds for the band that is known as the Rhythm Natives. They were founded on a common love for Hip-Hop and live instrumentation, and the integration of the two. Fronted by two emcees - Jon Narboneta, and Glen Techico - they’ve expanded into a six man unit that also includes: bassist Matt Mora, guitarist Mart Fabros, drummer Robert Fabros, and keyboardist Chez Guinto. In 2007, they recorded their live show at the Temple Bar. Since then, copies have been floating around all over Southern California and beyond. The musical energy heard on each track is so significant, that it has left their fans wanting more. Lucky for them, the guys are currently in the studio with producer Asi Friedman, working on a new album. 05.24.11 || Eyes Up || RHYTHM NATIVES @ NOLA's

Rick & Ray is proud to announce a new series of events called Eyes Up, designed to expose both up and coming and established talent in the Los Angeles area. The first event happens this Thursday, May 24, at Nola’s in the LA Arts District.

“We wanted to add to what LA has to offer by giving another option to those who want to go out and catch a show. I’ve always been someone who loves going to shows. I go by an idea that when it comes to the music I listen to, those artists need to kill the stage”, said Glen Techico of Rick & Ray.

We will kick it off with these artists on the rise: emcee Ms. Germ Free, the scratch DJ duo Handroidz, producer Bambeeno with emcee Kixxie Siete, and hip hop band Rhythm Natives.

Questions & Answers

The Rhythm Natives are helping us kick off EYES UP this Thursday at Nola’s in LA with a live performance. We had a chance to catch up with the band that’s getting ready for their sophomore project while consistently gigging around California:

What’s the best part about being in Rhythm Natives? (Bojo/Drummer) - The relationship of the Rhythm Natives band members goes back ever since childhood and by growing up together and being able to build a band with friends that you grew up with to create music for people to enjoy and listen to me is one of the best parts of being in the Rhythm Natives. 

You guys have been together for 10+ years, what are the benefits of that longevity? (Matt/Bassist) - Our band’s longevity has allowed us to build and strengthen personal relationships with each other.  We are brothers on and off the stage.  Not only do our commonalities bind us, but our differences keep our relationships fresh and interesting. I’m not saying we never argue, we’ve just never drawn weapons.  We’ve come to realize what’s really important.

What is the best show you’ve performed at and why? (Chez/Keys) - My favorite show was when we had a show on a rooftop in DTLA. The elevator wasn’t working so we had to climb up four flights of stairs. The problem was that I had the Fender Rhodes with me so we all took turns painfully carrying it up. It’s kind of symbolic to what we go thru that no matter what weighs us down we manage to make our way “to the top!!!”

Is Los Angeles a good environment for the band as an up and coming entity in the music world? (Glen/Emcee) - L.A. is the showbiz capital of the world. People come here to make it in the entertainment industry. It’s both good and bad for up and coming musicians. Good because there are lots of resources when it comes to venues, recording facilities and marketing companies. Bad because it’s saturated with every band you can think of.

Who would you like to collaborate with for the next project? (Mart/Guitar) - It was brought up a few times of bringing in our very own producer/headmaster Asi Friedman to do a side project/RN extension band, adding another element of musicianship to our already eclectic mix. 

What’s next for the Rhythm Natives? (Jon/Emcee) - Expect more music! Single songs accompanied by visuals. More shows. Collabs with clothing brands. And…maybe a flash band tour! A what? Yes.

On Wednesday, April 11, the Rhythm Natives will share the stage with their peers - Art Official and Simple Citizens - at The Mint in Los Angeles.

The lineup works perfectly; all three bands share a love for live instrumentation and rhyme. For $5 at the door, the audience will receive the cohesive energy that comes from a blend of hip hop, jazz, and soul.

A little background on everyone involved: Art Official reigns from Miami and have four releases under their belts. Simple Citizens, from Los Angeles, have been heard on national radio and have provided direct support for major hip hop artists. The Rhythm Natives, also from LA, spent 2011 touring for their debut album and are now working on the next project, while still gigging up and down the California coast.
