Luke Donald - World's Number 1 Golfer - What's in your bag interview
For the second weekend in a row we were fortunate to see two Englishmen battling it out for a big golf tournament. This time it was Luke Donald who overcame the disappointment of his loss to Ian Poulter the week before by beating Lee Westwood in a play-off at the BMW PGA Championship. Cool hand Luke is well known for his sharp short game and immaculate dressing, so we take a closer look at which clubs were in his bag and the clothes that helped him stay cool under the intense pressure of a final day’s play.
Driver:
Donald is not one of the longer hitters on tour and so he uses the eye-catching, white headed TaylorMade R11 Driver (9.5º) to help him gain maximum control and distance from the tee. The club has the ability to adjust the loft with Flight Control Technology (FCT) and you can adjust the face angle with the new Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP). A big point to note is that Donald uses this club out of contract – that’s a pretty strong endorsement from the world’s number 1!
Fairway Woods:
Luke again uses a TaylorMade club, the TaylorMade R9 (13º) 3 wood for a more controlled option from the tee and for approaches to long par 5’s. The R9 is a more classically shaped clubhead, similar to the R9 Driver and with FCT you can change the club into 8 different positions to optimise your performance on the golf course.
Irons:
Interestingly Luke is currently using the Mizuno MP 62 (3 to PW) irons instead of using the very latest clubs in the same series – the Mizuno MP 63 irons. Judging by the way he is striking and manipulating the ball around the course at the moment, we can see why he is reluctant to upgrade just quite yet! The MP 62 is a dual-muscle cavity back club that creates a left / right shotmaker’s bias for the low handicapped golfer.
Wedges:
Poulter carries Mizuno MP T-11 (54º and 60º) wedges with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts . Like its predecessor, the wedge is forged from 1025 carbon steel and features Mizuno's Quad Cut Groove technology helping Luke get high levels of spin around the greens.
Putter:
Regarded as having the hottest short game in the world right now, The Odyssey White Hot XG #7 is the club that Donald uses to putt. “The Fang”, as this club is commonly known as, is a modified mallet with a double bend shaft. Luke will get his feel from the White Hot XG insert – the softest and most responsive in the Odyssey lineup.
Balls:
The golf ball is an essential piece of equipment and Donald takes no risks by using the Titleist Pro V1x. Favoured by tour players, the Pro V1x utilises a four-piece dual core construction that lowers spin and maximises distance.
Clothing:
Polo Ralph Lauren has been the exclusive apparel sponsor of Donald since 2002 and their range of stylish and technical clothing, RLX Golf, has proven to be a perfect partnership.
Footjoy are Luke’s choice for both glove and shoes. He uses Footjoy’s customisation process to ensure his Footjoy Myjoys match his outfits. To ensure that extra bit of grip and comfort, he also wears the popular Mizuno Skintite glove.
His outfit wouldn’t be complete without the trademark visor – the Mizuno Tour Golf Visor. He is reported to be paid $1 million a year by Mizuno for simply wearing this bit of kit!
Fun and engaging interview with Olympic medalist Tasha Danvers. Spread virally in partnership with Mizuno to engage athletes with Mizuno's latest product lines.
