Instructions

When I was little, I could spend hours reading the instructions for board games, like Life or Careers or Risk or Monopoly. I think I was looking for secret rules that I could spring on other players. It never really worked. In fact, I don't think I ever played a Monopoly game with the auction rules, until my children were in their teens and I could kind of force that on them. But only once or twice.

When Katherine was a little girl, she had a wonderful toy. It was called "Six Fingers." It gave the appearance of having one more digit. And that extra finger could shoot messages, attack weaponry, fragment bombs and more. All were two inches or so of plastic. She spoke often of this long lost toy. So, Ben found a brand new Six Fingers on line and gave her one. Here, a small Six Fingers library.

By the way, I'm curious: Are there any missing toys from your childhood that you wish you could get back???

Is it more unsettling to discover that a celebrity whom you thought was dead is actually alive, or when a celebrity you believe to be alive is actually dead.

There are lots of potentially scary characters in the Wizard of Oz; the witch, of course, the mean tree, flying monkeys and so on. But the character who always frightened me most was Uncle Henry. He was totally unable to protect Dorothy from the cruel Miss Gulch -- even in his own house. He was supposed to be like Dorothy's Daddy, and Daddies are supposed to defend their children and their children's dog, too.  I think what made him scariest was that I really knew there were no such things as wicked witches. But I suspected that unprotective, weak Daddies might exist.

My own Daddy was far, far from that...he was the epitome of protective strength. But what if I had an Uncle Henry instead? Brrrrrrrrrr.
