Dear Richard, I must confess, though, that I wrote The Birdcage more than 50 years ago, and Robin Redbreast more than 40 years ago, so I can't really recall much of the detail about the characters now.

When I wrote The Birdcage, I was on the verge of breaking up with my then partner - a Canadian dancer, but Norah was not he. She was, in fact, a version of myself, as most of my characters are.

Robin Redbreast was written about (and partly filmed in) the house which I had just bought and in which I still live.

"Queer Street is full of mates" ...

Some of you may be familiar with the concept of Queer Street. That to be on Queer Street is to be down on one's uppers, in the midst of financial misfortune, etc.

However, the expression “Queer Street is full of mates” may be less familiar, if familiar at all.

It may in fact have only ever been said by Newcastle born musician and photographer, Michael Scott. Who has been conspicuous by his absence since the early/mid-1990s.

So, what is Michael saying here?

Primary, is the suggestion that, should one find oneself on Queer Street, not only are you far from alone, you'll likely see some familiar faces. And maybe, just maybe, there's comfort in that.

Also, depending on how you use or interpret the word “mate”, it could suggest that, even in the direst of circumstances, there are those that would predate.
