The short film I watched this week was Whenever You’re Ready (2018) Directed by Craig Ansley. The logline of the film would be as simple as “An actress auditions for a roll.” The link to this short film is: https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2018/09/27/whenever-youre-ready/ and I highly recommend checking it out.
This film gives an over view of how casting works and how the casting director will work with the talent if they wind up liking an actor for the role. The actress gets called in to the room to audition for her role (Inciting incident). The actress begins to audition for the role and reads it as normal (Plot 1). The casting director seems to like her and asks her to do it one more time, but bigger (Plot 2). The actress begins to go off book and starts to improv the role and even add movement within the role when audition and as she is doing the roll this time, the room is silent and focused on her (Climax). The Actress gets off the ground and thanks everybody, shakes hands and the casting director hugs her (Resolution). Overall it’s a really good story to watch as the film drags you into the story right off the bat.
In terms of cinematography most of the shots were mostly hand held aside from the shots from the casting camera and every shot they did had motivation behind it, which is always a good thing. There were certain shots where it would’ve been nice to see on a steady cam but given the limitations it was really well done handheld. Sound was done beautifully, no real audio issues and the only music was for the credits of the film as music wasn’t needed for this film, it was a great call. The credits also had the actress walking to a destination to keep us watching through. Editing was well done and consistent, no issues from when watching the film, cuts timed well and audio was at a good level. Production design was done beautifully. The PD had to create a casting environment and they did a great job in doing so.
A film consisting on a zero-low budget resource is indeed a challenging one to pull off but not impossible. The crew on Whenever You’re Ready (2018) did a fantastic job and learning while watching them pull off a short film with this deep of a story is great for our upcoming short.
