“In loving memory of Amy Turner who wrote this article” This is heartbreaking :( Design Director Alyson Waller ([email protected]) tells me this was really devastating for everyone who knew such a lovely a girl. Alyson: “The young talent who wrote this article is a college and a friend… she took her life a couple of days after this cover was produced. Amy always chose such unusual things to write about which gave me the chance to do strange covers illustrating her words such as the ice lolly woman” We all miss you Amy. x Its a fab new cover The Sunday Times Magazine, cant believe the story behind it; wishing e’body all the strength possible…

Dear Photograph Project: Messages to the Past
Ever flipped through those old photo albums, bursting with memories, and wondered what became of this and that? Ever felt the wish to grab the photos and take them with you to see places? Well Taylor Jones did, and one year after, he has a very notorious blog and a photo book coming out. Come and meet the Dear Photograph Project: the next picture uploaded might as well be one of your old ones.
Amazing project to do with old photos

”I love her sensitivity and civilization. I grew up in the Tasmania region of Australia. Back then, it was a very primitive place. She really showed me how to be cultured.”
“My family and I, we posed for this painting when we went on vacation to Hawaii”. Click-through for the story behind this week’s cover, “Capturing Memories,” and for more from artist Mark Ulriksen: http://nyr.kr/Nrem7h
Being a crazy health nut, I worry about all the chemicals in my beauty products. This homemade lipstain by The Beauty Department is so good for your lips because it’s only made of berries! It’s great for the summer too when lipstick just feels too heavy. (via The Beauty Department)

A new study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity shows kids who watch more TV than usual are more likely to have weight issues. When I first read about it, I thought, “Yeah. And?” I mean the link between sedentary children and obesity is well founded.
But, this study focused on the effects of too much time in front of the TV as it relates to leg strength, specifically what’s called “explosive leg strength,” which is needed for playing sports. Here’s a sobering statistic from the story at ABCnews.com (which is also where I got the image above):
[Researchers] calculated that each hour of television watched during the week as a 2-year-old corresponded to a 0.361-centimeter decrease in a child’s performance on the standing long jump.
and…
Fractions of centimeters don’t seem like they are that important, [study author Caroline] Fitzpatrick acknowledged.
“But on a small child, a centimeter becomes important,” she said.
And considering that most children watch more than one hour of TV every day, those fractions of centimeters really start to add up.
The story suggests parents offset any time watching TV with equal time doing physical activities. Or you could do what I’m going to do, which hook the TV up to a generator that is powered by two little stationary tricycles.
Can’t wait to try this oh-so-cute nail tutorial featuring a lovely how-to on creating a herringbone pattern! I love the colors used here, but would love to try this with black and white too with maybe a pop of kelly green. (via The Beauty Department)
