it was all so hard to take in -- literally, he didn’t know where to  start. why was he being told all of this?? ed also couldn’t help but  grind his teeth in frustration. whether it was because he was being told something like this and was tense or maybe even felt something for hugo ( along the lines of protective ) he nods and says again but more earnestly, “thank you.”

“i –” now this was ODD. he hadn’t expected him to place a kissanywhere but his lips – which said a lot ( who places a kiss on theknees so casually?? ) sure, ed felt pampered in a way… but maybehe shouldn’t word it in such way out loud. “thank you.”

A sigh ESCAPES his lips, his scattered fingers running through his ginger locks, “Does such a thing even exist? PEACE?” He huffs, shaking his head before shrugging, “How about…mates? We both just want to be mates, right? So let’s…let’s just stick to that.” Hugo nods confidently, licking his lips as he puts his hands in his pockets.

“we can try,” he suggests. it’s hard, he knows it is. after having kissed the other a few times it was common to have some feelings develop but it was difficult. ed knew he shouldn’t act on such an instinct. not with hugo of all people who just seemed as scattered as he was. he did LIKE him though. he could go on and on about how being alone was good to have no one hold him back but he needed to have some friends. some people to trust. “mates,” ed repeats with a nod back.

“Look buddy, I don’t care where you go. But you can’t stay here.” It was late and the annoyance was clear on Dominic’s face. All he wanted to do was lock up and go home. Go and get some sleep, something he had been lacking in the last few days.

his eyes narrowed as the other’s voice only worsened his headache. still, the minute he turned back to face him he only smiled meekly and nodded. “right, right. i don’t mean to cause any trouble.”

it was easy for a part of ed to convince himself that if he completelydrowned out people’s voices – things would be so much easier. he could say this was a vacation trip. he was out of gotham to make useof the various sick days he had never chosen to use. ed could also see it being easier to think that people truly appreciated him and hisknowledge ( because he was brilliant man ) and that him, jim and harvey were truly GOOD friends. he could also say that the penguinin front of him, the same man who had basically professed his actuallove to him – HIM OF ALL PEOPLE – was still that same man. surethere was the occasional twitching and flinching here and there andthe  all-around difference in composure and reaction to simple things( nygma sees all ) but other than that, same man.

actually speaking to him was a whole other story sadly. he spoke toodd for it to be his oswald. too kindly even. he continuously stuttered and his thoughts as a whole were scattered. ed had come to the conclusion that he was TOO different to be something he had learnedin therapy. whether his change was good or bad though, he had yet to see. for now all ed could do was mourn the loss of his beloved – or more like could have been thanks to his mind basically denying oswaldand his emotions – with a kiss. a simple one. not one to the lips, tothe forehead. nowhere around the face that brought on many conflictingemotions, some that he really did not want to release at the moment.

instead ed decided that gentle kiss between covered shoulder bladeswould do. he was so tall that ed would have to actually bend-over justto provide which gave him enough of an excuse to mask his face andsolemn expression with the little hair that would always fly up that heCURSED for so long before but now was thankful for. 

after he did so, ed released a heavy breath as he stayed in his bentstate. whether oswald knew what he had done or not, he didn’t careto notice as a slight throbbing sensation completely drowned his mindand thoughts. he left his forehead to continue to lean on his shoulder.this was not good. it seemed a headache that came on so quickly wasgoing to get the best of him and absolutely destroy this nice POETICmoment he was having with a man he once loved but probably had ( no clue ) what the hell was going on. 

he finally decided to huff loudly before he finally vocally addressedthe other – almost awkwardly. “i don’t feel well.”

he didn’t get the joke. perhaps he would have been angry before — before he had been subjected to the horrors inside of arkham. but now, oswald knew the punishment he would receive from his anger. his eyebrows furrowed slightly. there was hurt, of course. but he didn’t voice it out loud. “that was…humorous.” he spoke slowly, carefully choosing each word. he couldn’t slip up. even if he was out now, his mind was still there, reliving it all.

ed couldn’t help but tilt his head. no, this wasn’t the reaction he had anticipated. he knew things had changed between since coming  back bu he never would have guessed that oswald himself would be a changed man. then it all made sense when he remember where he had been sent. being stuck in a place like that must have changed  something in him. therapy must have been working. still, things would  run more smoothly for ed now with that response. “i try.”

“SORRY.” Oliver says with over hunched, shrugged shoulders as he beckons toward the game controller, “You’d think this place would have a better gaming system. Care to join me? I could use a teammate.”

“gaming system,” he repeats. ed rearranges this glasses as  he inspects the controller from afar before turning back to the  other male. his eyes almost sparkle at the work TEAMMATE. “right, okay... i have time to spare.”

“y–you what??” oswald shook his head, eyes uncertain as he gazed at ed. “i–i didn’t — didn’t realize you, ah.” damn it, it was hard to process things. even harder to really think them through. he swallowed, clenching his shaking hands into fists in an attempt to hide it. he wasn’t the same person that ed knew. not anymore. “you never…said anything.”

ed sighed loudly as he rubbed his eyes, feeling the regret already  drowning him. what was it with him regretting every single word he let out since arriving?? “KIDDING,” he blurts out immediately. ed chuckled but struggle so hard to make it sound sincere when it obviously wasn't. “it was a joke. of course it wasn’t all that funny but i simply wanted to see  how you’d react...”

The ginger is MORE than aware that he’s making an idiot of himself, bold in ways that he’d never be in other circumstances, brows furrowing, “What…what DO you want, Ed?” He lets out in a breathless whisper, genuinely curious.

he softly groans as he rubs his forehead. WHAT DOES HE WANT? what kind of question was that?? ed turns to him with a serious  expression quickly after gathering his thoughts. “i want to be at  peace with you.” whatever that meant.

Hugo sighs, running a hand through his hair, already regretting the words that flew so freely from his lips, “That’s not what I meant. I don’t mean that YOU’RE a coward. Just that…you chose to act like one?” Everything was fuzzy, licking his lips as his brows furrowed, trying to form coherent thoughts, “I dunno. Ed. Ignore me.”

ed continues to nod to tell the other that yes, HE’S LISTENING but his words aren’t making any sense to him. he bites his own lip. “ignoring or forgetting about it is easy but... i don’t want that. that’s too easy. it would completely erase the feelings behind both our actions and well...” ed realized he didn’t make much sense either and closed his mouth immediately. he then decided that clearing his throat and shrugging would have to do for now.

“So…you’re a coward then? That’s the only difference I see.” Hugo raises his brows, teetering on the balls of his feet as he nods, “Makes SENSE.” He says with a shrug, “I had the balls to do what you WANTED to do but were too afraid to do.”

“a coward,” ed repeats. he doesn’t like it. it was as if flashbacks of harvey bad-mouthing him flashed through his mind but he knew he had to stay calm. there was no reason to get so mad over  something so SIMPLE as a kiss. “okay.”

Hugo nods before cocking his head, “Wait…hang ON. This isn’t all on me.” He points a finger at the taller male, “You said…YOU said you wanted to kiss me. Why-” The ginger slurs his words a little, “Why would you say that if you didn’t…WANT to kiss me?”

“wanting and actually doing it are two different things.” ed  states smoothly as he rearranges his glasses. “i’m sorry but that’s the truth, isn’t it?? it’s what it comes down to.”

Hugo stumbles away, brows furrowing as he runs his hand through his hair, “Fuck.” He murmurs under his BREATH. Why did HE even do that? Perhaps to prove something to himself. To see if he could get his mind off of a certain raven haired thug. HE COULDN’T, “Sorry…I’m…sorry. Too much firewhiskey. Makes me do…stupid things.” He says lamely, his cheeks flaring red, “I was really that bad though?”

GOOD. this was kind of a good sign, right? they both ended up regretted it, right?? “it’s okay,” ed starts. he waves him off and watches his movement carefully as to not have him be anymore, well, reckless. “no, it just... it was unexpected. let’s just both agree  that it was a mistake.”

“i don’t know if... we’ll manage that as we go. if we find a need to murder, at least we both now we’re on the same terms.” ed couldn’t  help but look downwards and chuckle softly, VERY VERY softly.  “yes, i completely understand.”

CLEARLY the alcohol was pumping through the ginger’s veins MORE than he anticipated. His mind fuzzy and his actions out of control because before he knows it, Hugo’s grabbing Ed by the collar, pulling him CLOSE as he crashes his lips upon his.

NO, NO, NO. ed’s eyes widened as he felt the other move closer. why would he do this? this was not what he wanted. the attraction was there but he didn’t need this right now -- with ANYONE. he  pulled back ever so softly as he turned to look downwards, his thumb immediately reaching to ghost over his own lip. “i said want, hugo... i never said i was going to actually do it.”
