Do you think puppy boy Yata found himself waiting by the door after the betrayal? Like maybe Fushimi said something about not wanting a mutt to take care of and this just makes it worse.
Oh no, imagine every time someone stops by Yata’s place he can’t stop himself from getting excited thinking it’s Saruhiko D: Imagine Yata who always complained about Fushimi calling him a dog but also whenever Fushimi left Yata would find himself hanging out by the front door waiting for Fushimi to come home (and occasionally he would jump up and down when Fushimi walked in, and Fushimi could complain at Yata for slobbering on him). When the betrayal happens Fushimi definitely says something about a ‘useless mutt’ and even though he’s used those words before they never hurt until that moment. Yata grumbles afterward that he isn’t a dog and anyway better a dog than an asshole, just so hurt that Fushimi could leave him. Homra tries to cheer him up and finally Yata goes home, only to be met with an empty apartment that still smells like Saruhiko. Imagine maybe Fushimi did leave some things behind too, like he took his computer and a handful of clothes but he left his pillow and blanket and whatever was in the wash and Yata finds himself just sitting there wrapped in Saruhiko’s blanket letting the scent sink in.
Later Yata gets a call from Kusanagi, just to check up on him, and Yata claims he’s fine (but also maybe he needs help to find a new place). That’s when Yata realizes that he’s been sitting right by the door this whole time, like he was waiting for Fushimi to come home. Yata gets annoyed with himself all fuck that guy I’m not waiting for him but at the same time it’s such an ingrained habit for him, to be waiting by the door whenever Fushimi isn’t around (also imagine this in the context of Fushimi at S4, who looks under his bunk when he wakes up for Yata, becuase Yata isn’t the only one with habits that he can’t break). It makes Yata even more determined to find a new place, like the only way he can stop himself from doing this is if he finds a whole new apartment with a different door. At the same time Saruhiko’s scent around the house is beginning to fade and Yata finds himself more and more anxious, sitting by the door even when he doesn’t mean to, and every time Yata catches himself he just mutters ‘don’t be a stupid mutt’ and goes to bury his head in Saruhiko’s blanket again.
