Islam: Taking what is called the “Shahada” and accepting that there only one and true God and Prophet Muhammed is the last prophet and messenger.

Liminality

Islam: You learn teachings of Islam throughout your life and take those teachings and implement them into your life.

Reincorporation

Islam: Once you take the “Shahada” you abide to pray 5 times a day , fast during the month of Ramadan, pay charity, and make pilgrimage.

3. Is Marx’s critique of religion as the “the opiate of the masses” relevant to the event you attend? Yes but almost every religion has blueprints  to get to heaven or paradise. In that, Marx’s critique is relevant to the event I attended. 

4. Can you identify particular symbols unique to this religious community and determine their meaning? What do you think gives them their power and authority? Some symbols are the Quran and the Crescent Moon with the star in the middle. The Quran represents the word of God. The Crescent Moon represents the symbol of the religion. These items dont necessarily have power but have meaning to them.

5. How does power make itself evident during your visit?  What power relationship do you observe? Power made itself evident when you see, in this case, the Imam walk in front of everyone and I knew he had the power at the time. The Imam and the people he was talking to. This is the main relationship I observed.  

6. Can you identify any ways in which globalization influences the religious beliefs and practices that you observe? Globalization influence depends how strong your faith is. To a faithful person, global influence would not alter their faith in their religion but to someone who’s faith is not as strong, a powerful enough influence can waver that person into that religion or system.

1. Describe the way power is balanced in each relationship you experience or observe?  Depending on where you are and who you’re with, power can vary. For example, in class your professors have the power at that moment. But if you’re at home with your parents, your parents have the power. On the other hand if you are with friends, power can change depending on where you are.

2. How is power organized? Can you see the intersection of age, gender, income, race, religion, sexuality, or citizenship? Power is organized by the goverment or economy. The person or people who run the system can organize power based on their influence. These interactions are similar in the organization of power.

3. What political negotiations are present in these relationships?  There are no political negotiations within my relationships.

4. Consider how these power dynamics were established and how they might be changed? These power dynamics are based on place and age. Depending on where you are and how old you are power dynamic can be changed.

5. To deepen our understanding of the power state, make a list of all the ways you encounter the state in a given day. These may be at home, at school, in the office, or on the street. Representations of the state on television and radio, as well as in newspapers or movie, all contribute to the construction of the state as concrete, real and powerful.

I interviewed my mother Omolara Cokeer

Hello, my name is Omolara Coker and I am from Lagos, Nigeria.I came to America when I was 29 years old after having my first child years ago, which is Ridwan’s oldest brother. I came to America with my bachelors degree so I was eligible for any RN positions in New York. Going for the interviews, I felt like I didn’t belong because my English wasn’t proper and my accent was heavy. I felt like everyone else had an head start because this was their hometown and I’m just getting here so I feel like I had a chip on my shoulder. Fortunately, I got the position but the work is just beginning. Even task like going to the market were going to be difficult until I become more adapt to my new home. My husband had an easier time because he came to the United States more tthan once for his job so he had easier time communicating with others. By the time I had my second child, Ridwan’s second oldest brother, I became more comfortable with my language and communicating to other people. By this time, I am still living in New York with my 2 kids and husband. We didn’t moved Maryland until a year later. Maryland was much more calmer than New York so I didn’t have to exert myself that much At got my new job at as a LPN and had my third child, Ridwan’s third oldest brother 3 years later. In my new job, I felt like I was as relaxed as I ever been before in the United States. By the time I had Ridwan, I felt like the United States was my second home and I could speak it as well as the next person.

In 2005, Zuckerberg’s enterprise received a huge boost from the venture capital firm Accel Partners. (Invested $12.7 million into the network)

In September of 2010, he donated $100 to save the failing Newark Public Schools system in New Jersey. 

Zuckerberg signed the “Giving Pledge”, promising to donate 50 percent of his wealth to charity over the course of his lifetime. (Other members are Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and George Lucas)

 In May 2012, Facebook had its initial public offering which raised $16 billion, making it the biggest internet IPO in history.

Zuckerberg was however accused of stealing ideas from the creators of Harvard Connection.

Zuckerberg says he is neither a Democrat nor a Republic and the Facebook founder and his companies committee have given tens of thousands of dollars to both in recent years.

COMMERCIAL AND GENDER ROLES

While watching my local cartoon channel I noticed a few things about the commercials. The first commercial was a “Hot Wheels” commercial. The commercial showed all boys playing with cars and doing tricks with the obstacles. For only showing all boys in the commercial, the “Hot Wheels” company are trying to target the more masculine side of the audience. The main colors that were shown were red, blue, orange and white. These colors are mainly connected with men or boys. 

After this commercial, a “Bratz” commercial came on. The commercial was advertising their new movie and all the main characters were girls. And the colors they were wearing were pink, purple, brown, and yellow. This colors are mainly connected with girls. This tells me that this commercial was targeting the majority female audience.

One of the Best

EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS!!!! 

This movie is the epitome of Black girl magic! It was amazing to see successful, intelligent, beautiful, and poise black women dominate a predominately white male field (Back in the day) . this movie is a history lesson and ironically black people are still suffering the same issues from 1950′s. Like being undermined for their work, taking the extra mile and not being allowed to take credit. sexism is a real thing. this movie helped me realize the importance of using your voice especially as a woman, Rosa Parks among other women spoke up to injustice and that has paved the way for change in our present day society.

I recently had the chance to rewatch Hidden Figures. While watching in my own home, I was able to notice parts I wasn’t able to see in the theater. The intricate and small details of the lives of the women who worked at NASA as “Computers”. Janelle Monae, Taraji P. Henson, and Octavia Spencer brought life to the stories of the unknown Black woman who set the tone for America’s role in the space race.

Dove was recently in the news for this racist advertisement they put out which shows a black women “getting clean” and turning into a white woman. They said that they deeply regret the photo but the fact that this photo was even allowed to leave their headquarters is a problem.

I came across this video today and it blew my mind. This black guys were walking around Walmart and an old white lady yelled at them and tried to force them out of the store. She later accused them of having no money and when they told her they had money she said it must be drug money! Black men can’t even go about their day, doing menial tasks, without being harassed about their race.

In the year of 2016 the police department had managed to kill at LEAST 309 BLACK people in the U.S. Police are killing BLACK people at persistently high rates! It’s not about crime! There is no excuse for police violence! There is no accountability. And get this 30% of BLACK victims were unarmed in 2015! 13 of the 100 largest U.S. city police department kill BLACK men at higher rates than the U.S. murder rate! Do you see the pattern??? ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO LET YOUR SONS PLAY OUTSIDE TODAY BECAUSE THE OFFICERS BULLET MAY JUST HAVE HIS NAME ON IT!!!!!! So much for the land of the free!!
