Chapter 14 Fieldwork
1. Today’s interaction involved my roommate, friends, and professors.
The power balance between my roommate and i is pretty much even. Neither one of us dominates the other in any way at all. We both pay for our housing and the same amount by the same deadline. Therefore leaving us with an equal balance share of power. But with equal power also comes boundaries so on the first day after getting to know each other we established a set of rules that we would both follow and if either one of us failed to do so, we talk to the RA.
The power balance between my friends and is very much even. Majority of my friends are my causing an equal balance of power. No one dominates the other, we are simply just our own bosses in other words.
The power balance between my professor is visibly uneven. My professor has the power to make me do things I do not wish to do be it homework, test, or quizzes. Because my professor has control of my grades he has power over me. Also, the fact that he/she would be older and more educated contributes to it all.
2. I can in a way see the intersections of age, gender, income, race, sexuality, and citizenship.
If someone is older than you then they would usually have power over you. When it comes to gender roles and power males often times hold the power over females because we now live in a man's worlds. Income also increases one’s level of power tremendously. Race won’t do much but it helps to be white in America. Citizenship too raises one’s power.
3. There aren’t really any political negotiations present in these relationship. I could say that there are some academic negotiations with my professors on the other hand. For example, when I turn in a late assignment and the professor agrees to a maximum of 70%.
4.The power dynamics with my roommate was created between the two of us coming to an agreement that we are both equal. The power dynamics with my friends also was created the same way that the power dynamics with my roommate was created. The power dynamics with my professor has been instilled in history for forever. Professors are seen as higher than their students. Because they have already completed their undergrad and much more depending on their area of study. I don't believe that anyone these power dynamics would ever change, especially the relationship and power dynamics with the professor.

-Pedestrian laws
-Driving laws
-State law
- Degree curriculum of general education
6. The representation of the state reinforces the conception of the state as the primary institutional form through which social relations are experienced due to the fact that every interaction in some way refers back to the state. Even the simplest of interactions.
Chapter 15 Fieldwork
3. I would agree that religion is an “opiate” as discussed. My church is predominantly African and has one to three people there that aren’t African. But besides that, it seems to me as though they have all become very dependent on religion. Often feeling as though they can’t function without their religion. “Why spend so much time on it I didn’t need it”, a church member told me.
4. Particular symbols unique to this religion would be the cross on at the top of the top. This cross of Jesus Christ reminds the members of the church how Jesus had died for them not only died but also paid for their sins. The history behind each artifact and symbol is what gives it its power and authority.
5. Power makes itself evident in the church service because I see the pastor in the front of the church giving a service to the people. The pastor in this setting is the messenger of God, therefore, making him the leader of the people. As the people also in return pay him respect and listen to his service making gestures in agreement.
6. I can’t really identify too many ways in which the Christian religion is been influenced by globalization but what I can say is that the Christian religion is growing and it is growing rapidly.
My Family Over My Family
Chapter 13 Fieldwork
Interview Immigrant
November 28, 2017
“Dadddyyyy” “Daddyyy”, I heard my eldest son holler at the top of his lungs. Assuming him and my second son were having another disagreement I shrugged and went back to bed. Following immediately I heard “BABA TOBIIII” I jumped out of bed, my wife mother to three of my children and one on the way voice was shakey. Her voice was softer too and with every word she breathed, I could hear an ounce of fear burdened on every syllable growing by the minute. “What exactly is going on here,” I asked, no one made a sound and all I could hear was the water dripping outside on the pavement, my heart at this point had dropped into my bowels, believe me sincerely speaking I was scared shitless! All of a sudden I broke a sweat and it wasn’t even cold. Waving my second son away “Abeg on the fan” my voice now shakey than a hostage with a gun to his head. With so much commotion it hadn’t occurred to me that NEPA had taken the light so there was no electric this was a daily pattern my family and the entirety of Nigeria were accustomed to. The package is here and like a madman, I snatched the letter from my wife's hand. I was so excited yet filled with anxiety, discomfort, and gas at the same time, yes I said gas don't ask dinner last night had to be improvised as always. Ripping at the packet, My hands moved faster than my brain could keep up. “ DON’T RIP THE PAPERS INSIDE”, this from my wife came in one ear and right out the other as I read the world lottery on the envelope seal. Without a second doubt, I dropped to my knees, praying over the envelope, my wife, and kids now beside me comforting me as if I was the baby in the family. Yet here I was laid upon the cold floor like a fetus in the mother’s womb, this was it I was the lucky one. “Ye ye ye do you know what this means” I grabbed my family holding them tighter than ever before! Though my wife’s baby bump left a gap in between us I knew this family was filled with nothing but love and they deserved better. As the man of the house, it was my responsibility to provide for them, protect them and make sure they had not just what they want but also what they needed. But with this economy and government, I had a better chance of making that happen by robbing a bank. Each day jobs were becoming more and more scarce, and I feared that one of those days my job as a teacher would no longer be enough.
Tic toc tic toc, the time was flying right before my eye. I had less than an hour and a half to reach the airport. Staring firmly at this piece of paper in my hand, my ticket to a new life. A new life where my family can enjoy life and live happily together. But for now it would just be me, I sat there still as a mannequin, questioning whether I was making the right call. This lottery was a one in a million chance, what are the probabilities that I would be asked to come to America again. It was now or never I either board this plane or not, give my family a greater tomorrow or we stay here I the same cycle of compromised living, no electricity, and scarce jobs. “Plane to BWI airport departing in ten minutes” reared over the intercom. I had stepped foot in the airport and there was now no turning back. With the speed of god even Usain Bolt couldn't outrun me in this moment.
Like a magnet, I was pulled to America I had heard so many good recommendations that I’d be a fool to have turned down the lottery ticket. Baba Tunde said that I could escape poverty in America as long as I worked for it. Baba Segun mentioned the freedom “the home of the free and the land of brave” I think he had that saying wrong though. I was doing it for my family to provide for them a better living.
Sacrifices had to be made, my entire families name was not on the ticket just my name, Adekunle Onibatedo, my heart sunk as I read the ticket. I thought it would be a bit easier to just up and leave but I was mistaken. I felt as though I was betraying my family by just simply leaving them. What if my file for them to also come to America is denied? What if I'm making the wrong move? How will my young children grow up without a father? These were all challenges that I had to encounter and get past. Money itself was a barrier, how would an ordinary teacher like me afford to travel aboard.
Power and Religion
A law had been passed by the state of New York City requiring that all students say the pledge of allegiance and a prayer allocating their faith to God. Some parents found fault in this law and sued claiming that the law was in violation of the establishment clause of the first amendment. The case was later taken to the supreme court. The court ruled in favor of the parents that the law was limiting the freedom of the students to choose their faith. And that New York though has the authority to govern their state the way they see fit had no power imposing that religious law on its students.

The state must create a plan to remedy the lack of investment in its historically black colleges and universities to resolve a decade-old lawsuit over inequality in public higher education.

About 60,000 people from across Europe gathered under far-right banners in Warsaw.
With both the outing of sexual predators and the call for a cessation of violence in Baltimore catching fire as movements, one must marvel at the courage on view before us — even as the naysayers and the doubters and the haters vie for attention.
