OPEN TO ANYONE
the breeze felt nice as linden stared off towards the horizon. it was peaceful. at least he thought so when he was alone. though he loved his sister, being surrounded by all of these new people was intimidating. that’s why he had to step away from the friend group and found himself sitting on the sand with the tide just coming to his toes. he was dressed in a loose, white shirt with his swim trunks underneath.
he had debated going swimming. the water felt nice, and he had always wanted to be at the ocean like this. it was just strange to him. he began to think about too many things at once and the silence was deafening in an instant. he broke it himself. “ i wonder what it would be like to be in the middle of that expanse without land in sight. ” he said into the air almost as if he expected a fish to jump from the water to give him a response.
Eventually, Roewan would work out why exactly he had a tendency to vanish at the most inopportune times- but the realm of the dead had called him back at the top of the month, and after a few weeks of bureaucracy in an uncomfortable jacket, he was almost relieved to be back on the island that housed the Institute- the air was stiflingly hot, but the breeze was calming, and it didn’t bite through him the way the gales across the veil did. It was fresh off a meeting that he managed to make his way back to the beach, in fact, military jacket buttoned tight around his broad chest and its collar stained with gold paint that flaked from his fingers and throat.
He’d been expecting to be entirely alone, this late in the evening with summer in full swing- but it seemed even his typical predictions were off, when from a slight distance, another voice spoke up. He turned slightly, sharp blue eyes scanning the stranger for a moment as he shrugged. “Historically, it means you drown. I worked cleanup on the Titanic, no land in sight is only romantic when the tides are warm, my friend.”
