     HE STOOD, ONE   hand on his side, the other leaning against the counter as he watched zara checking the problem, considering for a moment of asking maria for her if the answer was wrong. she was better at math than him. but he smiled when zara revealed that it was the wrong problem, leaning over slightly to look at the text book as she laid down on the floor. he looked away from the math, down to his daughter on the ground, failing to hold back a laugh at the sight. shaking his head, he put the pencil on the middle of the text book before closing it so she wouldn’t lose the page, pushing both the textbook   &   notebook to the side before turning, crouching down next to zara.     ❝     well, i was planning on us going somewhere for dinner, but if you wanna lay here, fine. i’ll go by myself.     ❞     he smiled, reaching up to grab his keys from the counter, jingling them for a moment before bracing his hand against the cool surface help him up.

zara glares at him from her spot on the floor  , a huff escaping her lips.  ❝    it’s really not funny  --  i thought i was going loca !!    ❞   zara folds her arms over her eyes  ,  as if she were trying to shield herself from all things math.  but then she hears him speak  ,  and he instantly has her attention.  she moves her arms just enough to be able to see him  , and she eyes him as she gauges his truthfulness.   she moves her arms away from her eyes  ,  before propping herself up on her elbows.  eyebrows raise  ,  as the girl  ,  a spitting image of her father  , flashes him the signature amaro light-up-the-room smile.  ❝    you know i’m not gonna pass up a daddy-daughter dinner date.    ❞   zara laughs softly before she takes hold of the hand he offers towards her and pulls herself up.  brushing herself off  ,  she holds her hand out  ,  eyebrows wiggling.    ❝    so where are we going ??  can i drive ??    ❞

     HE WATCHED AS   zara went over the answer he had gotten, backing away a bit when she started to wave the notebook around before reaching out, taking the book to steady it.     ❝     hang on, let me double check.     ❞     lowering it back to the counter, he stood beside his daughter, tapping the pen still in his hand against each line, mumbling the problem under his breath with each tap before shaking his head, gaze back to zara, looking as confused.     ❝     are you sure you’re looking at the right problem, baby ? because this is the only answer i’m getting. you might need to talk to your teacher in class tomorrow if it’s wrong.     ❞

❝    double check  ,  triple check  , quadruple check !!    ❞    zara’s arms fold across her chest with a huff  , eyebrows raised in anticipation as he looks at the problem once again.  nose scrunches at the suggestion  ,  before dragging the textbook towards them  ,  while dark lacquered nail drags across the page.  eyes dart back and forth  ,  before zara blows a strand of jet black hair from her eyes and pouts.  ❝    .... it was the wrong problem.    ❞    zara’s eyes meet nick’s  ,  before she sets her pencil down on the counter and lays down on their kitchen floor ,  arms and legs sprawled out around her.  ❝    just leave me here to brood.    ❞

    ❝     I HAVEN’T DONE   them in a while, but i think i remember this.     ❞     he took the notebook zara slid him, grabbing a pen laying nearby, playing with it for a moment before he lowered it to the notebook, the tip of the pen scratching against a clean page for a few long moments. he stopped writing before he got to the answer, sliding the book back toward her, already walking around the counter to stand behind his daughter to watch her.     ❝     you know what the next part of this is ?     ❞

zara rests her elbows on the counter  ,  her chin resting in her hands while her fingers tap in a pattern against her jawbone.  as she waits  ,  zara  (  without regret  )  starts to hum the final jeopardy theme song.    ❝    should i go eat dinner or .... ?    ❞   she teases with a grin  , before catching the notebook as he slides it back.  letting out a heavy sigh  ,  her eyes  ,  the ones she’d been gifted from her father  ,  scan the paper.  as she gets to the bottom  ,  eyebrows shoot upwards before she starts waving the notebook around in the air.  ❝    that’s what i did , that’s what i did !! and i got three x squared plus seven x , plus two and the stupid program said i was wrong !    ❞
