Any news on flare 🙏
No news is good news, right?
Flare is about 3/4 done. Life issues got in the way this last year and I've been concentrating on my health. A couple of things reached critical mass last year and I was hospitalised for a while. (I also got persuaded to play FF14, soooooo... oops...)
The plot of the fourth book has always been very fluid. It's dependent on several critical decisions made by Aly and Fletcher early on, so if I happen to revisit the scene and try a different route, it requires a significant rewrite just to see how things pan out. So it's been a lot of fun to have Aly make the decisions and see where it takes them.
Needless to say, I have 200k words of various decisions, and I have to pick one. Tis fun.
I don't suspect it'll be much longer though. I'm aiming for a draft to be ready for beta early next year.
Sorry for the wait! It is coming, I promise. Along with another as-of-yet-unnamed romance novel I've been working on.
Hello sorry to bother but I was curious to know if you used to write fan fiction under the name Kryalla Orchid. I really enjoyed your works my favourite one was A choice made.
Hello!
Yes, that’s me. I have a fandom tumblr as well, where I keep all my nefarious fandom secrets ( @kryallaorchid ).
Thank you! A choice made was as heartbreak as it was fun to write. I enjoyed that experience (never again tho).
Any news on the next book in the shift series?
There's another book? No one told me! Am I supposed to write it?
Flare is in the works, I think I've started from scratch for it four times now, some parts of my grand finale just aren't working because the set up and build up wasn't right. But I finally have everything figured out.
I'm about 3/4 away through what I hope to be the final version (bar editing and restructuring). I'd like to aim for next year release, but there's been a lot of life altering events happening in my personal life that is causing delays on everything.
Writing books takes time and I'm juggling a lot of things right now. Flare is coming!
I just finished heart of the rose and it’s exactly what I needed after the craziness of the holidays. I cannot sing your praises enough how you manage to create such captivating and diverse characters. I’ve been an avid romance novel reader since I was 13, and reading something with such a familiar concept that ACTUALLY acknowledges how healthy relationships are built and succeed is like hot cocoa after shoveling a foot of snow out of your driveway. 1/2
Part 2/2 I can’t express how glad I am that you addressed the difficult issue of toxic familial relationships and how to handle them as an adult. And even though the food was never described in explicit detail I still ended up wanting whatever they were having particularly anything Noémie’s father made. I would sell my soul for a chocolate croissant or eclair. I’m off to purchase another kindle copy for my mother now, and maybe my sister too.
Ahhh! Thank you so much!
I had a lot of fun writing Heart of the Rose, it was so enjoyable to just allow the romance to flow and have all the dramas come from external sources, rather than internal fighting or miscommunication. Building up a relationship of trust is hard work but so rewarding in the end and I wanted Kian and Noémie to have that sort of foundation, especially with what they had to go through to be together.
Food is such an integral part of the culture in France, so I had to include as much of it as I could, even if I was lax in describing the smells/tastes. I was more focused on the couple than food. Romantic dates, wine, hot chocolates in winter, it seeped through their relationship. And Noémie’s parents treats are divine :D
Thank you so much for dropping me a line, I love to know if people enjoyed my stories! I hope the rest of your family enjoys it too!

Twenty-four-year old Noémie Belrose-Song is a budding lingerie designer. Born in France, raised in England, Noémie returned to Paris to open a boutique, Chant de La Rose, and sell her brand. With her small but dedicated team and her first exhibition approaching, she’s happy with her life and is focused on growing her clientele.
She absolutely did not expect her old middle school crush to waltz through her boutique door and back into her life.
Kian Von Brandt, heir to Celestial Fashion, Executive Officer of the newly opened branch in Paris and occasional model. Golden hair, emerald eyes, and a kindness that only seems to enhance his good looks. One smile from him and that stupid crush bubbles up and threatens to overwhelm.
By the way he’s gazing at her, he might feel the same.
There’s just one tiny problem. Kian is contractually barred from dating by his overzealous parents.
His wonderful bedroom eyes are calling and Noémie doesn’t want to resist but he may be more trouble than she bargained on.
There will be an Ebook giveaway on Goodreads soon, so watch out for that one!

Hi! I was wondering, were you planning on putting Tangle on Smashwords? I bought the last two on there and was hoping to pick up book 3 there as well
Hi!
I wasn’t going to, because Ingram Spark distributes a lot further than Smashwords (the only place extra that Smashwords gets me is Scribd and libraries, and neither of those places has had any hits).
I am concerned about using Smashwords in general as I have to create so many different formats, while Ingram and Amazon only require one. As I found both Shift and Twist pirated in a form that could only have come from Smashwords, it has made me (understandably) paranoid.
I will consider it and do a bit of research on how I can better protect my work and let you know.
There are various other book sites Tangle is available that isn’t Amazon. Kobo, Barnes and Nobel, Apple are just some of them.
I bought both of your books last night, stayed up all night reading the first one (knowing full well my kids would have me up at the crack of dawn. Oops) and just finished the last a few minutes ago. I cant wait for the third one!
My apologies! I wasn’t notified about this ask.
I really hope you enjoyed them both (and the third is now out!). And pulling an all nighter to read it! That’s an amazing compliment, thank you!
Hey I was wondering, for writing your novels did you use just a text program and then use some of the tools you mentioned while editing (hemmingay and grammarly etc)? Or do you use something different for the initial writing part?
I use Word for the initial write up, I don’t do anything extra until its time to edit.
There are a bunch of novel focused programs out there, like Scrivener, or even just word processing programs like OpenOffice, or even just text programs like ZenWriter that don’t have many bells and whistles. Each has its own pros and cons. You need to find a program that works for you.
Hi! Congrats on your novel! Do you have any advice for a first time self publisher? I’m currently line editing (can’t afford to hire an editor, alas) and I’m hoping to have it ready for publication by September. Any tips or tricks of the trade? :)
Congratulations! It's a scary path to go and it always feels unsupported because you’re on your own, but you’re doing great.
Editing
Get a beta. Or a couple of them. Don’t use family (critique from family hurts so much worse than friends). I use a few close writer friends from different backgrounds so that I get a wide scope of reviews and opinions. I always acknowledge my betas in the acknowledgments of my books and they get a signed printed copy at the end. Betaing process takes a couple of months (I use Googledocs so they can see each other's comments, and discuss, but if your beta isn’t comfortable with that, use a separate google doc. Means I can edit at the same time they’re reading.) Don’t rush your betas, they’re doing you a favor and they are amazing.
Use various editing programs just for a boost. I use Grammarly, Edit Minion, Hemmingway in conjunction. It takes a while, but its really helpful. I also use Word cloud to figure out my most used words.
Do a listen read through. Plug it in to Balabolka or any other word-to-text-program and listen. Great for finding missing words or almost right words.
Logistics
Decide what to publish. Ebook only? Printed version? Both? There’s pros and cons for both, and different genres perform differently with both. I only really offer a printed version because I like having a physical copy myself and sending them to betas, as well as the option of getting it into bookshops (which is difficult).
Decide where to publish. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Again, pros and cons for both. Using KDP Direct will limit your ability to get into bookshops (because you can’t sell it anywhere else), but it is a better option for some genres. I use KDP basic (to get me onto Amazon) and Ingram Spark (bookshops and wider distribution. Now Ingram Spark does send to Amazon, but if your book is already there, they won't. Amazon looks to KDP first and boosts their signal, so it's always a good idea to do both).
Buy your own ISBN. You will need one for each version of your book. IE Print versions need a different ISBN to the Ebook. Since you OWN it, you can use the same ISBN for different publishing sites, instead of having to purchase one through them (some sites offer free ones, but you CAN’T use it elsewhere. This is because ISBN is linked to the publisher, and if you’re the publisher, you can use it whenever you like, but if you buy one from Ingram, for example, they’re listed as the publisher.
Book formatting
Fiddly, time-consuming and annoying, but doable on your own. There are a LOT of help sites out there. And lots of templates.
For me, it's better to start from scratch. Get a template and copy-paste your work into it, then go over formatting with a fine-tooth come. It's amazing the amount of junk that exists in a word doc, you need a clean version cause it will mess with formatting. I eventually set up my own template and write straight into that.
PRINTED AND EBOOK NEED SEPERATE FORMATS. You’ll need templates for both. Don’t start on this until you’re absolutely ready, because otherwise, you’ll be editing two documents.
Printed version: Choose your size and get the correct template for it. KDP offers templates, use them, the same template can be used across the board.
Different sites have different EBOOK requirements for formatting. CHECK.
Basically, centered Chapter names, no indent first paragraph, and indent every other paragraph after that is the usual formatting. Check other books for what they do and try to match. Ebook and Printed have different requirements for a section break
Font is also important.
Take it slow. Lots of checks. Publishing sites always have a proof at the end to check. (Don’t do proofs through INGRAM, do them through KDP, because Ingram has a paywall for them).
Covers
Covers are expensive and they should be because people often buy based on that. Have a rough idea in your head of what you’re looking for.
I use @pinkuchama because she’s amazing and I love her art. Since she’s a hand-drawn option, it takes a lot of time but the results are wonderful.
There are various sites where you can buy premade covers, or get custom covers. BookCoverZone, BookCoverDesigner, other indie sites like that. They vary in quality, and most of them use stock images. BE CAREFUL, because they use stock, often the same stock is used on other book covers. Sometimes covers can look similar even though different Indie cover designers created them.
Covers have templates for print versions so you get the spine and back. Most cover design sites offer a paperback cover for extra cost. Cover spines are based on how many pages, so you need to have your paperback document ready.
Ebook covers have design specs too.
Marketing
I fail at this, but I’m trying my best. My main problem is that its an Indie series, and most wait until its done before buying.

Everything was unraveling.
It only took a day for eighteen-year-old Alyson Gale to lose everything. Her home. Her family. Her future. A single moment of pain and release, a single moment of answers that spawned more questions. Appearances can be deceiving.
A war has raged for so long the lines have blurred. Property of the Institute, genetically-altered Noah knows nothing of his inherent abilities. Barren walls, endless drills, and brutal missions are no way of life, and he longs for meaning outside the confines of the Institute.
As seventeen-year-old Alyson Gale prepares for college to follow her dream of becoming an animator, her greatest concern is leaving her best friend, Fletcher, behind. On the cusp of something good, her life changes in the worst way possible.
Trust is buried beneath layers of deceit and mimicry and Aly is exposed to the secrets of the Faceless, a truth that will change everything she knows. And, perhaps, destroy her too.
Truth can be twisted.
A shifter is a natural liar. Sliding from one form to another and hiding in plain sight, deception is embedded in their being. As a genetically engineered shifter experiment, Noah’s lies are born from necessity and come as easily as his shift does. His name, his life, his ability, he hides it all because he must. If he doesn’t, it will destroy everything he holds dear.
Eighteen-year-old Alyson Gale is a sensor, not a shifter. Truth-seeker, she can look into a shifter and see who they truly are. Now, she’s forced to lie to protect Noah, her family, her friends and, most of all, herself. None of them can know and the deception is starting to burn her.
The shifter war has tumbled into their backyard and it’s not ready to let either of them go. The war’s greatest weapon is about to be unleashed and all Aly and Noah can hope is that they survive it.
