It’s funny, in a bittersweet way, how you can be surrounded by people and still feel alone. You’re part of the group, and everyone knows your name, but somehow, the invitations never come your way. You hear about the plans later, the nights out, the group hangouts. You smile and nod, pretending it doesn’t sting, but there's a quiet ache that settles deep in your chest. It’s not that you’re angry or resentful—it’s just that you wonder what it would take for you to be included.
You start to tell yourself it’s okay, that maybe they didn’t think you’d want to come, or maybe they just forgot. Maybe it’s just how life is—people get busy, plans slip through the cracks. But the more it happens, the more you start questioning. Are they not inviting you because they don’t really want you there? Or do they just assume you’re fine being left out, that you’ll always be the one who’s okay with staying in the background?
You find yourself in this strange in-between place: not quite a stranger, but not really part of things either. You know the inside jokes, the small details about their lives, but there’s always a piece of the puzzle that you’re missing. The conversations shift when you walk into a room, not because they’re excluding you, but because you’re just not quite a part of the shared experience they’re having.
But you keep showing up. You keep laughing along, keep listening, keep pretending that everything is fine, even as that quiet feeling of being an afterthought lingers at the back of your mind. You tell yourself it’s not a big deal, that it’s just a phase, that they don’t mean anything by it. But deep down, you wonder if maybe one day, you’ll stop trying to be a part of it all, if maybe one day, you’ll stop caring about whether or not you’re included.
Until then, you’ll stay on the edge of the group, a shadow in the background, waiting for the moment they realize you’re more than just someone who’s always there—you’re someone worth remembering.
