Red Plaid || Riley & Xavier
Privacy, to Xavier, was a simple request. While he’d not exactly needed to even ask for it in the past, in his mind it should be something that went unspoken. Apparently in this house, however, that was null and void. The two new “recruits” (he loathed that term as it implied he had any say in the decision, which he didn’t) came and went as they pleased.
So it really shouldn’t have been surprising when the entirely too perky voice cut through the perfect silence of the fall afternoon. With an audible sigh, he slammed his laptop shut and spun in the chair to find Riley on his bed. He studied her for a minute, switching his gaze between her and the item in her extended hand. He swallowed the urge to tell her to get off, knowing it would be pointless, and instead settled on satiating her by taking the ‘present’ from her.
“Do I even want to know what’s in here?” There was no inflection in his voice, the question entirely rhetorical as he was almost finished opening it before he finished the sentence. Once it was full opened he simply hung his head for a second before fixing her with a blank look. “Really? This is what you’re bothering me for? I was hoping it’d at least be useful.”
Her smile only widened as he took the package from her, ignoring the surly expression and the palpable dislike that was radiating off of him. Somewhere buried under layers of scruff and annoyance had to be a sense of humor and Riley was determined to find it and bring it out. His energy was weird -- everyone of her new colleagues had weird energy, actually. She couldn’t put her finger on what exactly was weird about it she could feel that it was different somehow.
Maybe she should email Karen and ask? But they were supposed to be keeping their distance so, maybe not.
Xavier’s reaction to her gift, her peace offering, had her bristling. “It is useful, asshole!” she retorted, “And what happened to ‘it’s the thought that counts’? Besides, it’s supposed to be something between a joke and an apology and a peace offering. You really weren’t hugged enough as a child, were you?”

The steady beat of the EDM music matched the beat of Cash’s heart as she wove through the nightclub, her hair almost glowing in the darkened room. Wisps of smoke cast a dreamlike, hazy fog around the crowd, making it almost impossible to focus on anything or anyone. Pinpricks of starlight rained from the swirling strobe, illuminating everything inside the darkened nightclub in slow, sweeping circles. As the music picked up, the pulse becoming more and more erratic, so did her heartbeat. Raves were a delightful thing to Cash, the anonymity and hedonism speaking to her soul on such a level that she couldn’t help but feel the tension ease. Her perceptive gaze flickered throughout the crowd, taking in the sell of the drugs, the grinding of bodies, the pure chaos of youth. A open supporter of the chaos, part of Cash had to fight her intrinsic compulsion to shout “Fire” instead and watch as the weaker humans raced away in a panic, screaming hysterically while the rest just laughed and continued on, ecstasy flowing through their veins. Let the good times roll. Unable to help herself from chuckling at the thought, she continued on her path until she reached the bar, ordering a shot before casting another bright-eyed glance at the crowd.
Energy. What was the point of life without it? How could people survive in a sleepy little town like Fairburn? If she was going to be there long, Riley was going to have to find a way to spice up the town some. As she wove her way through the crowd she could feel the ebb and flow of the energy around her, moving almost to the beat of the music.
Riley danced and spun her way through the crowd, absorbing energy from the people around her. She’d learned as she got older how to take energy without draining others completely, but a crowd like this made it far easier. She’d come under the guise of learning about Atlanta’s drug trade -- what were the people buying, who was selling, how much were they charging, etc. but her real purpose was to get her energy fix. The fact that she’d managed to lift a significant amount of money off one of the morons dealing ecstasy was an added bonus. As she turned again, she caught a flash of white hair -- apparently she wasn’t the only Fairburn transfer here tonight. Might as well take advantage and make a contact.
She sidled up along side the other girl, grinning mischievously. “Don’t tell anyone, but I managed to get this-” she pulled the wad of cash from her bra so that just the edge of the money was showing “-off the douche with the green hair selling E. I’m really tempted to buy some from him with his own money...you in?”

Four people in the same house undoubtedly lead to some conflict, but for the most part Riley thought their little association was doing alright. Yes, her pajama shorts had somehow ended up in Xavier’s room -- a room that was supposed to be off limits to everyone but him and Dan -- but since she saw no point in that rule, she tended to ignore it. The shorts had probably gotten mixed up with the laundry -- laundry she’d been kind enough to wash, by the way -- and she personally believed Xavier was making too big a deal out of their presence in his room.
Whatever. Best to make amends anyway, right? She’d been wandering around one of the few stores in Fairburn and found men’s pajama pants that were nearly identical to the offending shorts. Obviously they were now a necessity.
Wandering back into Xavier’s room (if he didn’t want people in there, he should really shut the door) she plopped down on the edge of his bed and held out a freshly wrapped package containing the purchase. “I got you a present,” she said with a grin.

That’s some bullshit. What do you do for fun here, then? I swear to god if you suggest something like cow tipping I’m gonna scream
“Just Riley,” Reckon started with a wink, shaking her hand. “Nice to meet ya. I’m Melanie. And I’m watchin’ Titanic.”
Riley cringed as Melanie made a “dad joke.” God, even the humor in the boonies was lame. “Watching Titanic? In public? Guess you brought this on yourself then, huh?” she teased, raising an eyebrow. “I mean, the ending isn’t exactly a secret.”
