Phil rested his forehead against the toilet, breathing heavily. He hadn’t eaten, so he wasn’t about to vomit any food up, but he felt sick enough. Part of him just desperately wanted this whole thing to be a dream, but Phil knew it was real. He couldn’t bring himself to look back up at Riley. He knew it was an accident, that his mom had started the whole thing. He could easily feel hatred for her. But Riley? Riley was his best friend, and no matter how hard he tried, Phil couldn’t hate him. It didn’t mean he had to accept what happened. “…..please go,” he whispered. “….I can’t look at you right now.” His hands were shaking as he gripped the porcelain, squeezing his eyes shut. “…I need a couple of days….”

“...roight.” Phil had spoken, and Riley pulled away, his own expression carefully masked against his own feelings. “....’m sorry,” he whispered one last time before heading for the door and his own room. This had been a hard conversation to have. He could only hope that someday Phil could forgive him.

“How did she die?” Phil snapped. “What went down?” He wasn’t sure he wanted every last detail, but he wanted to understand. He needed to know, even if it wasn’t something he necessarily wanted to hear. “Did she come at you? Did you go at her? Why were you even in her office in the first place?”

The anger hurt, but Riley didn’t flinch away from it. He deserved that pain. “She sent me another note…” he began slowly, “and Oi went ta talk ta her. Oi wasn’t gonna do anythin’ originally, even though...yeh said-” he cut himself off and went on with the story. “She wasn’t listenin’. Said all koinds of awful things, ‘bout me, ‘bout yeh… ‘n Oi told her she needed ta give yeh space, ta leave yeh alone until yeh wanted ta see her…”

He swallowed thickly, remembering every detail of the event clearly, as if it was happening again in his mind. “....she came at me.” The bandages on his shoulder and arm were clear as day, silent evidence of what he was saying. “Said she’d send me ‘n all of us ta hell fer takin’ yeh away from her… ‘n…. Oi didn’t mean ta do it.” The last six words came out a whisper.

Phil turned his head to the side, crying all over again. It took a few tries for him to calm down enough to speak, but it finally came out. “….what happened?” He asked breathlessly. “….I need to know what happened.”

“...how much….how much d’yeh wanna know?” Riley pulled away a bit, taking another shaky breath. So far this was going better than he’d expected, sort of. Phil hadn’t hit him or screamed that he was the worst person ever. “How much detail d’yeh really want?”

“She’s dead,” Phil whispered. He tried to conjure up some sort of hatred for Riley. Phil wanted to hate him for this, but the emotion wasn’t strong enough to stay settled. Instead, the grief just flared up, as if Phil had just received the news for the first time. “W-…” he was too choked up to talk anymore, and he thought he was going to be sick.

Covering his mouth, Phil shook his head and jumped from his bed, running for the nearest bathroom to dry heave into the toilet.

For a full minute, Riley stood in place, quivering like a leaf. Finally he forced himself forward, using every last ounce of his courage to approach and kneel next to Phil, resting what he hoped was a comforting hand on the BLU’s back and rubbing gently. “...’m sorry….” he whispered again.

Phil was confused at first, unsure of what Riley was getting at. But he could also piece together the broken fragments of Riley’s words. The reality of the situation hit all over again, leaving Phil speechless and cold. He didn’t do anything more than stare at Riley, trying to sort through which emotion was strongest: hatred, betrayal, anger, relief, or just sadness. A brief flicker of each emotion crossed his face before Phil settled for a blank stare.

Riley flinched again, but he tried to press onward. Phil needed to know, somehow. They needed to get through this. Once more he shot Spencer a nervous look before trying to meet Phil’s gaze again. The pain visible there had him flinching harder and taking a step back. “...Oi...Oi went ta talk ta her…” He paused, taking a shaky breath to keep from fumbling his words. “....’n she wasn’t listenin’. Oi troied-” his voice cracked and he cleared his throat. “....’m so sorry….”

Phil just turned to shuffle back to his bed. He really wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone, but he didn’t have the heart to push them away either. Laying back down, Phil just waved a hand listlessly toward Riley, indicating he could talk.

The Sniper winced and shot a look at Spencer before stepping into the room as well. One hand went to grab at his injured shoulder as he winced again. “...Phil…” he trailed off after that, not entirely sure how to say this. It was one thing to tell someone that their mother was dead. It was another thing entirely to say ‘I killed her’. “Phil, Oi’m sorry. Oi didn’t want ta hurt yeh…” He closed his eyes and bowed his head, unable to see the sad grieving mess any longer. “...just wanted ta help…”

It took a few minutes for Phil to crawl out of bed. He hadn’t moved since yesterday, and moving now felt almost foreign. He shuffled to the door and opened it a crack, prepared to tell Spencer to go away, but he wasn’t expecting to see Spencer and Riley. Closing his eyes, he let out a quiet yet sigh before shuffling to the side to open the door. “….hi,” he mumbled. “….I don’t need well wishers.”

Riley swallowed thickly at the look on Phil’s face, then shifted nervously in place. “....’s not why we’re here,” he forced the words out. “...not entoirely, anyways. Can….can we talk?”

Riley didn't go to see Phil until the next day. Part of it was to give his friend time to clear his head, and the rest was his own weakness (and stubborn, worried fiancé) keeping him from moving much. The morning after, he forced himself to get up and take a shower, going through the motions of any normal, sane human being. He still hurt quite a lot, as evidenced in the slow and careful way he moved, but he had adamantly refused any kind of painkillers. Spencer had tried to force some on him, but he'd refused and said he was fine.

They both knew he was lying, that this really was just another way for him to punish himself for what he'd done.

Only once he was dressed in clean clothes and had Spencer awake to go with him did he step out of the room and make his way over to where Spencer had left Phil. He knocked quietly on the door, honestly terrified of what he might find when the door opened.

“You’re only a couple years older than me love,” Spencer said with a laugh. “You make yourself sound like you’re well past middle aged. You’re still young yet.”

“....never really felt young,” Riley shrugged. “Felt old the day Oi left home. Just been feelin’ older ‘n older since then.”

“Watchin’ the lot o’ yeh run around with so much energy makes me feel older still.”

“We should go sometime.” Spencer looked a little happier at the thought. “I mean, if you wanna. I was jus’ thinkin’, we’ve worked here for years an’ haven’t seen all there is ‘ta see. I kinda feel a little bit of cabin fever.” 

He shrugged. Spencer wouldn’t force Riley, especially since he got the impression Riley wasn’t too keen on going back to 5gorge. At the very least, he knew these bases existed, so if he wanted he could look more into them and figure out which ones weren’t as hot as Badlands.

“Sure, if yeh want. Oi don’t moind.” Riley let his attempts to remember go, let the little smile return. “Yeh make me feel old, luv. ‘m already too set in my ways.”

“I’d love ‘ta check that one out.” Spencer hummed as he moved his fingers from Riley’s hair to his neck, absently pressing down in a faint massage. “What’s 5gorge like?”

“...it’s......er....green.” Riley squinted at the far wall even as he went the rest of the way limp under Spencer’s fingers, mentally struggling to remember. He’d only been at 5Gorge for a few weeks, really.

It had been where he’d met Claire, when she’d come to visit a friend, how he’d come to get to Badlands in the first place. It had been where he’d actually drowned, where he’d met Isaac....

Probably no surprise his memories were faint and vague at best. “Oi remember the weather bein’ noice. Not much else anymore.”

“There’s also like. Uh…” Spencer had to rack his brain to think of other bases he’d looked up. “Harvest. Borneo. I don’t think either of them have very much water. I ain’t touchin’ Hightower though, forget that.”

He wanted to take Riley somewhere new. Sure, he could drag Phil out and about, but Spencer wanted to share these moments with Riley.

“Oi could show yeh 5Gorge, maybe. Oi was there fer a bit before comin’ here. Long before Oi met yeh.”
