Tieria and The Plan
Because Tieria, of course, only exists for the sake of the plan. He wakes up with Veda in his head and the plan etched into his heart and that is his sole mission in life. Nothing else matters to him for the longest time.
He is in Celestial Being to help guide them through the plan. That’s what they’re all there for, after all, and he doesn’t understand why everyone else bothered to join Celestial Being when they don’t seem to feel the same way. They say they want to change the world and that they believe in the plan but they simply don’t act like it— Sumeragi’s constantly drinking, there’s too much chit-chat on the bridge, Lockon acts like he doesn’t have a care in the world, Allelujah keeps screwing up, and don’t even get him started on Setsuna F. Seiei…
The rest of the crew doesn’t pay attention; they botch missions, jeopardize the plan, and just don’t seem to take anything seriously enough despite his constant efforts to bring them all back on task.
If he’d been offered a place with the Innovators in season one, he would have taken it gladly and without hesitation because he would finally be working with competent people who understand the plan, know how important it is, care about the plan, and are actually working toward carrying it out.
The Plan is the most important thing to him because he doesn’t understand why it exists. He doesn’t realize that it is not supposed to be an end goal in and of itself, but rather the means to another, better end. He doesn’t get that the plan is for the sake of the world and the people in it.
It takes him years to realize this, and when he finally does, it changes everything. Because that means that the plan is only important so long as it benefits mankind. It isn’t sacred, it isn’t infallible, and it’s okay if they aren’t following the plan anymore so long as they’re still pursuing the purpose behind the plan.
That’s how he’s able to reject the Innovators’ offer to join them in season two and why he’s willing to sacrifice himself in Trailblazer. His role hasn’t changed—not at all. He’s still there to help guide Celestial Being through their plan, but he finally understands
"(unpopular opinion: shinn asuka had potential as a character before GSD became The Kira Yamato Show pt II)" MAN YES THOUGH i mean he was being very "reckless protag" at the start but imo he was on the brink of actually learning from his actions. SORRY JUST HAD TO SEND A MESSAGE CAUSE i have so many feelings on GSD (most of them negative - ) don't even get me started on rey
Sending an ask is fine!! I still have a lot of feelings about GSD, as it was my Very First Gundam, so even though I’m not actively in the fandom, nor was I ever really other than, like, two really subpar fanfics, I like the opportunity to talk about it. My love for Gundam Seed Destiny is the love of nostalgia–it wasn’t actually that good, but it meant a heck of a lot to me at the time. Besides getting me into Gundam, it presented a fundamentally different narrative about war than anything else I’d been exposed to up to that point, and it was in some ways formative for me in that sense. Narratively and as a piece of writing, though…it was not great.
Shinn’s arc was a trainwreck and it didn’t have to be. He wasn’t some sort of irredeemable villain from the get-go, he was a hurting kid with PTSD and an impulsive streak. Athrun was trying to get him to make better choices, but Athrun was affiliated with Orb, Shinn had trauma, and Durandal was playing everyone. Shinn was manipulated by Durandal, but also took reprehensible actions on his own. So it’s more complicated than him just being a victim of Durandal, but it’s also false to say he wasn’t one. I know from an Anime Insider interview from when the show was released that someone on the production staff (head writer or director, I think? It’s been years and my hard copy’s not here) basically said that Shinn was a portrait of the problems with modern Japanese youth, that he was “entitled” and craved “acceptance” and “approval.” I remember being annoyed by that when I read it and it still annoys me. If they were trying to portray Shinn as entitled, I’m not sure they did a good job. Traumatized war orphans who live on their combat ship just don’t read as entitled to me. His tendency to seek approval constantly and especially from the wrong people is among his tragic flaws, but it’s also among Athrun’s, and yet things turn out very differently for those two characters.
Personally, I find Shinn most interesting as a counterpoint to both Athrun and Kira, in the sense of this is how their arcs could have gone wrong. I am not certain this is what the show was trying to convey, but I’m a former English major and texts are sometimes more fun when you read for what’s actually in them rather than authorial intent. Kira’s arc in GS is plagued by the threat of the Earth Forces wanting to turn him into a glorified tool. Shinn’s arc, in an indirect way, is that made real in the form of Durandal’s manipulations (and Rey’s, though Rey is also simultaneously complicit and a victim). The difference between them is the allies Kira had with him (vs. Shinn’s allies, who aren’t all truly his allies, aren’t close to begin with and are picked off one by one through the show, until only Luna and Meyrin survive the series, and only Luna stays with Shinn). Athrun, meanwhile, makes poor decisions about who to follow, but also is ultimately able to realize when his side has morally gone beyond the pale, and to use the connections he had from childhood (Kira and Lacus) with the other side to reorient himself to a side that matches his moral convictions (vs. Shinn, whose only remaining childhood connection, the cell phone recording of his younger sister, is a tool that Durandal uses to manipulate him toward further morally questionable decisions). Shinn is a testament to the chaotic nature of war, a reminder that our faves, while good people, also got lucky. If they’d ended up in the wrong places at the wrong times, they could have ended up like him, or at least in similar situations.
REEEEEEY. My feelings about him are so complicated and at the same time boil down to screw Ulen Hibiki. A lot of my GS and GSD feelings boil down to that honestly. Rey deserved better. Rey also did some very, very screwed-up things and the fact that he was actively aiding Durandal in turning Shinn into human UXB shouldn’t be overlooked, but he was also one of the only people who was really kind to Shinn. The fact that he helped Shinn rescue Stellar makes me think that under all the manipulation and pain and screwed up things that never should have happened to either of them, Shinn and Rey’s friendship was real, to some extent. In an environment with no Durandal, it could have been good for them both.
It’s been like 10 years since I watched this show why on earth do I still have this many emotions about it???
(Disclaimer to anyone who comes across this in the tag: I am not an active participant in the GS or GSD fandoms, and know nothing about the current discourse trends. I’m not really interested in fighting anyone on this, it is just my opinion. Lemme be wrong on the internet in peace if that is what you feel I am.)
Honestly thank you for this reply, I agree with so many things here Although in my case SEED was definitely watched a long time ago, I only discovered GSD this year and honestly? maybe my standards were too high. i mean the first gundam show i ever watched just happened to be G00 and.... yeah. try topping that. regardless, i do really love a lot of aspects of SEED and GSD and they both hold their own place in my heart, which is why i feel strongly about the way that GSD was handled.
From the first episodes i really wanted to sympathise with shinn, but it almost seemed like the show didn’t actually want me to. honestly the piece from the interview would annoy anyone i feel - shinn definitely did some selfish and reckless things and he’s not a model soldier in any way, but entitled is the last thing i’d call him. his whole ongoing clash of beliefs and ways of doing things with athrun was something that i had HOPED would come to a satisfying ending but no. and even putting my issues with kira yamato aside, the way that the show turned around to show shinn as the villain and kira as a savior was a bit of a metaphorical slap to the face. instead of making this boy grow and, you know, have an actual character arc, we’re gonna make kira come fix this mess - which feels part marty stu to the rescue part deus ex machina. the second part i also agree with, although i’d say that the fact that kira and athrun climbed out of the mess while shinn and rey couldn’t is... unsatisfying to say the least. it’s not like i would like to see kira and athrun crash and burn, it’s rather that i feel cheated by the logic of this show. the thing i agree with is the fact that our heroes had every chance and every right to end up same as shinn - but the part where i have a problem is where the show doesn’t seem to really realise it. they seem to be pushing the narrative of shinn being wrong and misguided, and i have a lot of trouble believing that athrun and kira are not. and again, i still feel a LOT cheated by the fact that the whole athrun-shinn relationship wasn’t really as much thought through. i mean, this is not athrun’s first time being in the middle of hard decisions - obviously he has been misguided this time as well, but something tells me that with a push he could have helped shinn out of this in a different way.
oh, rey.....
i don’t begrudge anyone disliking him honestly, cause lbr the show just wants us to hate him desperately. what a snake, that fiend. (sarcasm)
but yes it’s just another character who was treated a bit unfairly imo. it seems like everyone can have redemption, but that everyone doesn’t include everyone actually. obviously he did some really horrible things and that’s something no one is going to defend, but at the same time he’s as much of a victim in this as others. durandal had many wrapped around his finger, and rey, who has known him for so long, is in no way an exception. in fact, aside from all the bad things that were shown, the show actually managed to throw in some moments where rey’s true personality did shine. and one of the most telling ones were the moments where he interacted with durandal. even though it’s doing a poor job of it, the show is still quite clearly trying to tell us that more than anything, rey seeks acceptance and approval as much as shinn. and it might be my personal opinion but this boy deserved to own up to his mistakes instead of paying with however much of his already sad life was left.
and yes, his relationship with shinn i am almost convinced was absolutely genuine. in fact it’s more than likely that rey wasn’t even realising that he was doing something bad while manipulating shinn - i feel like it was his own way of putting him on the path that he felt was right, since rey trusted durandal so blindly
all in all i am definitely still very much passionate about these characters and there’s much more i could say but i feel like you really summed up most of it very well so i’ll hold back from rambling more than i have ahah
Which Robot Anime Protagonist Should You Fight?
Amuro Ray - He once tackled a man on a horsback off his horse and proceeded to beat him up. He’ll beat you up.
Kamille Bidan - WHY ARE YOU A TERRIBLE PERSON? His parents got killed by the Titans and he got put in a coma while fighting for everyone’s rights. Don’t hurt the adorable gerbil.
Quattro Bajeena - There is no way you can lose this. Just bring up his mom and watch him break down in tears. Plus, he got pushed off a horse once.
Judau Ashta - He’d leave for Jupiter after being disappoionted at how whimpy you are. Technically your win.
Üso Ewin - You would win but why are you such a horrible person? Usso is just doing his best despite his terrible life. Don’t be a terrible person.
Kou Uraki - Just shove a plate of carrots at his face. He’ll run away.
Seabook Arno - Here’s how this is going to go down. You’re going to schedule a fight and there will be a production conflict and it’ll be shortened to a punch and a kick. Then it’ll be further shortened to a punch. In all cases, who cares? Seabook isn’t important.
Bellri Zenam - Probably the most fair fight you will get out of Gundam protagonists. Go all out. It’ll be fun.
Setsuna F. Seiei- He’s a gundam, man. No way you can win.
Garrod Ran - You can win this, provided that you aren’t a newtype. Then he’ll get mad enough to beat you up.
Loran Cehack - Don’t be a terrible person. Loran’s only hurt 1 person in the entire run of Turn A Gundam. Why do you feel the need to put your hands on a perfect fluffball?
Heero Yui - Your win. He’d threaten to kill you but almost everyone he’s threatened to kill ended up having a great life or ended up marrying him.
Kira Yamato - He survived a nuclear explosion. Why do you think you stand a chance?
Shinn Asuka - Just do it. Fuck the consequences.
Domon Kasshu- the man’s job is to fight people using ridiculous martial art moves. No chance of victory.
Banagher Links - He once fought off 3 trained soldiers with nothing but a Haro. But without homefield advantage, you could probably win.
Sei Iori - Do you enjoy beating up little kids? You’re the kind of guy that’d beat up Shotaro. Get out of my face.
Noriko Takaya- Don’t be an ass. She did nothing wrong.
Nono - She’s literally a robot but she might just let you beat her up but would you really do this? She’s too innocent and naive. It wouldn’t even feel good to win.
Kouji Kabuto - This depends. Which version are you fighting? If it’s original, good luck. If it’s mazinkaiser, maybe he’ll let you beat him up if he’s in a good mood. Shin Mazinger? He’ll definitely let you beat him unless you bring up his grandpa. In any case, why? Kouji’s trying his best.
Tetsuya Tsurugi - Character so forgotten about that you might just forget to fight him. You win.
Ryoma Negare - Good luck. His best friend can literally rip your face apart with his bare hand and Ryouma’s stronger than the said friend
Haran Banjou - This man could be literally made of metal and has the combat skill of James Bond and Jet Li combined. Plus, if you manage to beat him, he has a harem of women that’ll beat you up. Do you want to be chased for the rest of your life?
Shinji Ikari- Beat him up. It won’t be satisfying for anyone but at least it’s an easy win.
Akagi Shunsuke- Why would you fight him? He’s just an insurance company worker. Cut him some slack.
Roger Smith - He’s literally batman. Don’t do it.
Aoi Hidaka- Did you hear her scream whenever she pilots Dancouga Nova? No way in hell can you win.
Shinobu Fujiwara- He might just let you win, but that’s because he’s a good guy. In a fair fight, he’ll beat you in 2 seconds flat
Chirico Cuvie - The man’s life is hard enough. Let him be. Though he might just break your neck and walk away if he feels like it.
Noa Izumi - Dude she’s a cop. Don’t do it
Lelouch - Fight him. Please. Who cares about the outcome? You know you want to punch his smug face.
Guy Shishioh - He’s a cyborg who becomes a God of Destruction. Fighting you would be like washing his hand.
Shotaro Kaneda - I mean if you like beating up little kids…
Kappei Jin - Dude his friends and family all died. Why do you need to fight him? Go fight Sei or something.
Watta Takeo- He runs a compay and pilots a robot while attending elementary school. He’ll beat you up then sue you while learning about negative numbers.
Hikaru Ichijyo - Ask him if he’s Rick Hunter. Just do it.
Isamu dyson - Fight him. Even if you lose, he’ll prove to be probably one of the only fair fight on the list. On top of that, it’ll be fun. He’s not a superhuman or a little kid. Just fight him and have a drink with him. He’s a cool guy. He’ll forgive you.
Gamlin Kizaki- He’s from a race of giant aliens that thinks war is the only legitimate mean of foreign diplomacy. He will murder you.
Alto Saotome- He gets beat up by almost everyone in the anime anyway. Your win.
Sosuke Sagara - He’s just doing his job. Why do you need to be a bother?
Apollo - He’s a reincarnation of a cosmic dog thing. He’ll probably bite you.
Amata Sora - He has 2 incredibly strong women crushing on him. You can beat him but you won’t survive the aftermath.
Takeru Myojin - He has a bomb that will blow up Earth if he so much as clips a nail inside of him. Why do you want to get us all killed?
Cosmo Yuki - Probably. I mean, why not? Even if you don’t, the entire anime he’s from is basically the world beating him up. What’s a few more punches?
Shingo Hojo - Dude he’s a space samurai revolutionary that fights evil gods in a giant robot. He’s like a bad game of madlibs. You can’t beat him.
