every so often i see rocky angst/whump on my dash and i love it but it just reminds me - are movie only fans aware of exactly why earth's atmosphere is deadly to rocky?
because like yeah sure neither grace nor rocky can breathe in the other's atmosphere, but that's fairly far down the list of problems on either side. for humans the problem is that erid is hot enough and the atmosphere thick enough that we'd be walking into a pressure cooker that's twice as hot as a normal pressure cooker and 15 times as strong! and while rocky can handle the lower pressure in our atmosphere relatively well, a lot of his internal biology happens to be made of somewhat flammable materials? and in trying to save grace he gets to discover first hand what happens if you take a system that produces temperatures up to 400°C as part of their natural cycle and immune response, and then try to breathe oxygen into it
and yes he does still have a lot of residual trauma over that!
(from when they were breeding the taumoeba to be nitrogen resistant, which grace mostly didn't start in the book until after rocky was awake)
and actually to add to that excerpt - rocky's not worried about himself there. he's back in his xenonite tunnel by that point, which can withstand a lot, if the experiment did have oxygen and did catch fire or explode, he'd likely be fine
but grace wouldn't. despite knowing grace comes from a planet where oxygen is part of the atmosphere, and knowing it's a gas grace needs to survive, rocky just wants to make sure his friend knows that oxygen makes things flammable! and he doesn't want to risk grace being on fire or dying in an explosion
Now, I don't hate Eva Stratt (adore her, in fact), and I don't think Ryland Grace does either, even if their relationship could never be what it was before. Rocky, on the other hand—
sometimes it's all a little much and you just gotta sea star it up okay
floor time
The small voice in your head that says: "I don't need to write down every small detail of this plot idea, I love it so much, I'll remember this."
That's the devil speaking.
Consider: Adrian glows. Rocky can’t see it and doesn’t know but he can feel the warmth radiating off of his mate and adores it, especially when he’s cuddling/sleeping.
Because I can always make something more painful better;
Rocky loves the warmth of his mate. He loves the special energy he can feel on his carapace when they’re together. He knows it’s special to Adrian (each Eridian’s is different, after all). It’s been so long since he’s felt it. Space is so cold and he aches for Adrian’s light touch.
Humans have a kind of ultraviolet light that radiate from us in a different way than Eridians do. It’s faint, but Rocky can feel the warmth, the sensation that reminds him of home.
When he broke the Xenonite and ripped the chair off of Grace, for just a second as he touched Grace’s arm before collapsing, Rocky could feel the light coming from Grace, and he lost consciousness with the thoughts of Adrian. For just a second, he was back home, and could die in their arms. It made saving Grace was just that much more worth it.
(project hail mary spoilers) ENOUGH with the "found family disbands at the end of the story" trope. I'm coming back to your alien planet with you and living in a biosphere your mate designed for me and teaching a bunch of baby rock crabs about relativity.
Ok but the Eridians were WILD for the mission they sent Rocky on.
Like before humanity even CONSIDERED sending folk into space we were like "ok lets see if anything can survive at all, lets see if things can get there and come back yada yada" and there were COUNTLESS space missions before we even dared as far as sending someone to the MOON for 5 minutes.
But the Eridians were like "Star not eaten by Astrophage? We go there." And sent an entire crew of their BEST SCIENTISTS and engineers on this flight, KNOWING it would take DECADES and having NO CONTACT with them for that space of time and not even knowing what R A D I A T I O N is.
Truly the "fuck it, we ball" species of all time.
probably one of the reasons why i love phm so much is that it's a movie literally about the merits of platonic love and platonic soulmates. enough of these stupid romance movies gimme two characters whose friendship fucking saved both their planets, and who love each-other so fucking much that they would sacrifice themselves for the other over and over again. finally, a movie that shows that all love is powerful, not just that between romantic partners.
couldn't agree more
^ yeah!! grace DID have a life on earth. he LOVED being a teacher!! he LOVED his classroom of kids!! his life on earth was HIS, and not having a family/romantic partner did NOT make his life worth any less than anyone else

Good Vibrations Cabinet Glitch furniture by Ferruccio Laviani
Andy Weir king of writing “what if a guy was in a situation” books
Stratt: with enough astrophage, California in it’s entirety could blow up
Grace: oh that would be a catastrophage
Ilyukhina would have sent this to the PHM group chat, trust me
