The Girls In The Band
They wiggled, they jiggled, they wore low cut gowns and short shorts, they kowtowed to the club owners and smiled at the customersā¦and they did it all, just to play the music they loved. In the thirties and forties, hundreds of women musicians toured the country in glamorous All-Girl Bands, while others played side by side with their male counterparts. Yet by the mid-fifties female jazz musicians had literally disappeared from the workplace; their names, their contributions to music, completely forgotten.
THE GIRLS IN THE BAND tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30ā²s to the present day.
These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents.

Why do men think women are angry just on their period?
Iām angry all the time. Get the fuck away from me
Authorās note:
āAll of the experiences in this comic are either directly from my own life or related to me by people I know and care for.
I donāt know, Iām all mad today. In the elevator in my building a woman decided she had an opinion about something I was wearing around my neck and grabbed it so she could tell me what she thought, and got mad when I told her to fuck off. Iām on the subway and a stranger wants to touch my hair. Every time I fuck someone or love someone, 0r change my body or decide whether or not to wear make-up or talk about the people I love, I prepare for the cascade of opinions or tirades or thinly-veiled self-congratulatory tolerance and itās easier now to just not share, to hold those precious things private. Iām tired of my body and my life being public property, of my identity and choices being used by others for leverage, at that entitled hurt or anger in their eyes when I donāt want to play along. Iām tired of seeing the people around me get manoeuvred or manhandled or held up like fucking pariahs when they just want to be left in peace. Iām bored of being someone elseās politics. I donāt want to talk ā Iām just reading my book while Iām on my way homeā From the comicĀ Robot Hugs

heartwarming:
"For the last 13 years Japanese photographer Miyoko Ihara has been taking pictures of her grandma, Misao, to commemorate her life.Ā 9 years ago, 88-year-old Misao found a stray odd-eyed cat in her shed:Ā she called it Fukumaru, hoping that āthe god of fuku (good fortune) would come and everything will be smoothed over like maru (circle).āĀ Miyoko has been photographing their beautiful friendship and the way they go about their daily routine ever since.ā

everyone has said and done problematic things in their lifetime. thatās a result of the society we live in, not necessarily a reflection of their character.
what is a reflection of their character is how they react to being informed of the negativity within their behavior and statements, and whether or not they choose to change their behavior.

(Oh hey, I made a thing about a topic thatās important to me.)
āPRIVILEGE is when you think that something is not a problem because itās not a problem for you personally.ā
I feel like nowadays many people who say/do racist things (not necessarily intentionally) will never willingly admit to their ignorance, even when faced with irrefutable logic and reasoning ("But Iām not hurting anyone, how is it wrong?!"). LEMME EDUCATE YOU. Chances are, if you are defending something that a PoC identifies as racist, IT IS RACIST AND YOU SHOULD STOP DOING IT. IDFC WHAT ETHNICITY/NATIONALITY YOU ARE; JUST STOP. IDFC IF IT DOESNāT FIT WHAT YOUR DEFINITION OF āRACISTā IS; JUST STOP. IDFC IF YOU THINK YOUāRE BEING āAPPRECIATIVEā OF A CULTURE, IF ITāS NOT YOUR CULTURE, YOU DONāT HAVE ANY BUSINESS TELLING PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY ARE OF THAT CULTURE, HOW TO FEEL ABOUT IT. JUST. STOP. And donāt bring the āwell my friend is PoC and isnāt offendedā excuse ā ONE PERSON DOES NOT SPEAK FOR AN ENTIRE RACE JFC
Racism isnāt ONLY displayed in acts of violence, believe it or not. This is what internalized racism looks like. And if you donāt find any of this offensive even in the slightest, well, it just goes to show how thoroughly ingrained it has become in our society to overlook acts of racism if they arenāt āhorrificā enough. I suggest you stop relying on your white dictionary definition of what you think racism is, and open your eyes.
All too often women believe it is a sign of commitment, an expression of love, to endure unkindness or cruelty, to forgive and forget. In actuality the loving response to cruelty and abuse is putting ourselves out of harmās way.
