The pushback against smoking is certainly good for society but a lot of y'all who claim to be progressive and compassionate vis a vis substance abuse have an unfortunate tendency to be real assholes about it.

Like, if you're coming at the problem with the assumption that quitting smoking is something you can "just do" and the problem is that smokers are just choosing not to, you have already lost the plot before you began.

I posted these links above to add food for thought about the physical, financial, and societal costs of smoking versus other health ailments, such as obesity.

In the past, smoking caused more deaths than obesity. This is quickly becoming not the case, and yes, that's largely due to the substantial decline in smoking.

Everyone jumped on the bandwagon of eliminating smoking because of it's increased risks to health and costs.

Today, medical studies are pointing more and more towards obesity being the largest factor for increased health risks and increasing costs, as obesity plays into a larger range of other physical ailments.

I did basically teach GIS to myself, so it’s not impossible. Just hellish. Also, expensive if you can’t get a license through an employer or school.
