Dismissing Romeo and Juliet as dumb horny teens is OUT, crying because every attempt these children made to show love, kindness and tolerance in the face of senseless hate only led to more violence and death is IN
I think both can be in. They barely knew each other and the second anything goes wrong they both start talking about killing themselves. They are over dramatic and don’t think things through or wait one second before freaking out. They are teenagers and teenagers are dumb. It is sad that fear and hate ultimately pushed forward the tragedy, but that doesn’t make them smart.
Romeo & Juliet and the Suicide Discussion
Teachers, students, young people, Shakespeare enthusiasts, anyone really! As I have been rereading Romeo and Juliet for my blog, and I started thinking about how suicide is discussed in modern media. For many teenagers, R&J is there first introduction to Shakespeare and it’s climatic Scene is one of double suicide. How is that discussion framed in your classrooms? Is it even an issue for R&J, or is it an exception? If so, why? Any thoughts or insights are greatly appreciated!
