And on that note, if the ISU really wanted to address the scoring issues that are driving people away from figure skating and hurting its popularity with a wider audience (at least in western countries, anyway) there are a lot of things they could do.
Like, getting judges who arenāt blatantly racist would be a good start. Casual fans can tell, yo. Iām the only person in my family who follows figure skating closely enough to know jack shit about the actual minutiae of the sport, but after the Olympics, my news feed was just a bunch of four-year fans going ????? about why Dabin didnāt place higher and why Satoko and Kaori werenāt on the podiumā¦ because even people who donāt know what the fuck is going on can tell. And when thatās a consistent pattern, when thatās what happens every single time, someone who got interested in figure skating after a big event like the Olympics is gonna follow it for a few months, maybe even a whole season, but theyāre going to get sick and tired of watching performances that moved them underscored because the skaters in question donāt happen to be white and Russian. And thatās how FS loses potential fans, yo.
But if they donāt wanna address the appalling racial bias in the sport, better places to start would be:
more clearly defining what characteristics an element must have to earn thus and such GOE and actually holding that to a standard, rather than ālol judges can do what they want, letās give this flutz a +2 because we like the skaterā
if they really want to do something about the āāāāunfairāāāā advantage of quads in the menās division (/sarcasm), doing things like adding an additional level to spins & step sequences, so that guys who are strong in those areas and can achieve greater degrees of difficulty on those elements have the chance to make up the point difference, is a better idea than basically taking punitive measures against guys who are stronger jumpers

seriously, this is such a pet peeve of mine, youād think the whole point of having five different PCs would be to give credit where it was due as far as the individual pieces that come together to form a great performance. like, to look at Alinaās programs at the Olympics (no shade @ her, sheās just a kid, but all shade @ the judges), she should obviously have pretty high marks on skating skills and transitions, because those are areas where sheās strong. but to have equally high marks on choreo? on interpretation? nah. when you look at the protocols, most judges will pick a round number and stay within three quarters of a point for all five components, and thatās stupid, because not every skater is going to be exactly equal in all five components, you feel? give skaters credit for their strengths, but donāt inflate their weaker components because theyāre white the judge likes them
