👏👏👏 Jeff Seid, IFBB Pro physique competitor, NPC champion and fashion model with a huge online following talks briefly about what many would rather remain ignorant about .
Times are changing and people are finally starting to wake up to the atrocities of the meat industry and consider other options .
Personal message to @jeff_seid - you have a huge following and a huge amount of influence - you don’t have to wait if you want to start making a big difference in the world - a plant-based diet contains all the amino acids, minerals and vitamins necessary to compete at the highest levels of sport - without any blood being spilt. 👏👏👏 People consuming meat will consume over 7,000 animals in their lifetime - and bodybuilders far, far more. By switching to a plant-based diet you would save thousands of lives alone - and with your influence potentially millions of animals would be saved. Environmentally, the world cannot sustain the growing population without serious changes to our diet - the UN has advised a global move to a meat and diary-free diet if we are to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change 🌱💪
Vegan: Can you believe that some people kill cats for fun?
Non-vegan: I know right! They are sick and evil people. They should all rot in prison cells. What kind of selfish monster could do that to a cat?
Vegan: Did I say cats? I meant cows.
Non-vegan: OHMYGOD SHuTtheFuCKUp! Vegans are so irrational and judgmental! Respect other people's choices!

Powering yourself with plants can make you strong on many levels. You’ll build your compassion by saving more than 100 animals every year from being exploited and killed for meat, milk, and eggs, and you’ll slash your risk of suffering from some of our country’s biggest killers, including heart disease, cancer, and strokes. You may also live longer too: Vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters .
Worried about protein? No need. The average vegans (non-athlete) actually averages 70% more protein than they need every day (over 70 grams). There is so much misplaced concern over protein - 97% of Americans eat enough protein, those that don’t usually have eating disorders such as anorexia, or are severely limiting their calorie intake to an unhealthy amount .
So virtually all Americans get enough protein, but less than 3% of Americans get the minimum recommended intake of fiber .
Fiber only comes from plant sources. Meat contains no fiber. A lack of dietary fiber has been associated with a higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and various cancers, as well as higher cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar .

🐓🦃 White meat (chicken, turkey etc) is often seen as a low-fat, ‘lean’, healthy food. However it isn’t even close to being so. Chicken and all white meats are muscles, which are made of protein fat and fluid. Nowadays average raw chicken meat is 17.5% fat, rising to 38.1% when roasted .
Professor Michael Crawford found that chicken contains as much fat, gram for gram, as a Big Mac. He analysed chicken thigh meat from several supermarkets – even organic suppliers – and found they contain more than twice as much fat as they did back in 1940, a third more calories and a third less protein. Someone eating a 100 gram portion of chicken would get 207 calories from fat and only 64 from protein – and this wasn’t the breadcrumbed type which is even higher in fat. Even organic chickens didn’t do much better – 154 cals from fat and 74 from protein. This is probably because despite having more space than factory-farmed chickens, organic birds are on the same regime of high-energy feed, little exercise and being bred for rapid weight gain. Says Professor Crawford: “This focus on rapid growth has changed the fat composition of the chicken meat itself, and you cannot escape that – even by removing the skin and scraping away the subcutaneous fat stuck to the meat.” .
The team also found that a medium-sized chicken contains almost a pint of fat !
Cholesterol from white meat does just as good a job at clogging arteries and causing heart disease as any other cholesterol. The human body produces cholesterol on its own and never needs outside sources. All plant foods are cholesterol-free !
Atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries leading to heart disease/stroke/heart attacks and vastly increasing risk of various neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s) is not caused by old age. Examination of American casualties during the Korean and Vietnam wars showed significant atherosclerosis by age 18 or 20. Their Asian counterparts, raised on diets consisting mainly of rice and vegetables, had much healthier arteries. 💚
🌱💪 Vegans often hear: “but where do you get your protein?” Well, thanks to a large study that compared the nutrient profiles of around 30,000 non-vegetarians to 20,000 vegetarians and around 5,000 vegans. The average protein requirement for non-athletes is around 42 grams of protein a day. Vegetarians and vegans average 70% more protein than the recommendation every day. So protein is by far the most overstated nutrient. People are unnecessarily obsessed with protein - but it’s very, very difficult to actually be deficient in protein, and only people who are falling far short of their recommended daily calorie requirement (such as people with eating disorders) will be deficient in protein. It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein. Nearly all vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds contain some, and often much, protein. Fruits, sugars, fats, and alcohol do not provide much protein, so a diet based only on these foods would have a good chance of being too low in protein. However, not many vegans live on only bananas, candy, margarine, and beer. Vegans eating varied diets containing vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds shouldn’t have any difficulty getting enough protein as long as their diet contains enough energy (calories) to maintain weight. Athletes such as bodybuilders of course have a greater daily requirement for protein, and we’ve covered many vegan athletes building huge amounts of strength and muscle without any issues. There is normally no advantage in consuming more than 0.82g/lb (1.8g/kg) of protein per day to preserve or build muscle. This already includes a very safe mark-up. There hasn’t been any recorded advantage of consuming more than 0.64g/lb. The only exceptions to this rule could be individuals with extraordinarily high anabolic hormone levels (steroid users).
Vitamin A
Because it aids the repair and growth of body tissues, vitamin A is crucially important to bodybuilders, but also vital for the general population. Other important functions of vitamin A are the development of the reproductive system, skin, eye sight integrity. Many bodybuilders probably have marginally low vitamin A intakes due to higher levels of activity/muscle growth/repair and could benefit from consuming extra plant-based sources of Vitamin A .
Another dietary issue that vegans don’t have to worry about though is Vitamin A overdose, and here’s why. Plants contain beta-carotene, which is a precursor to Vitamin A, but not actual Vitamin A. The human body is capable of selectively converting beta-carotene to Vitamin A only when it’s required. When the body currently has enough Vitamin A, the conversion of beta-carotene slows down to make sure there isn’t a excess of Vitamin A, which is very harmful.
However animal sources of Vitamin A are known as retinoids. The body doesn’t have a safety valve for turning off the absorbion of retinoids - they are always absorbed no matter what - which means overdosing is possible. Too much Vitamin A (3 or 4 times the RDA) is very harmful and can be fatal. Prolonged (slight) excess of Vitamin A from animal products is associated with the following symptoms: nausea, blurred vision, fatigue, weight-loss and menstrual abnormalities.
Excess Vitamin A has also been suspected to be a significant contributor to osteoporosis. Excess Vitamin A during early pregnancy has also been associated with a significant increase in birth defects. These defects may be severe, even life-threatening. Even twice the daily recommended amount can cause severe birth defects. The FDA currently recommends that pregnant women get their vitamin A from plants (beta-carotene), not animal sources.
And remember, overdosing on vitamin A is only possible when consuming animal sources, so vegans don’t need to worry about that!
My Hunger Games co-star, Woody Harrelson, was actually one of the original reasons I became vegan, because he’s been vegan for, I don’t know, 30 years or something. So, with the facts I was gathering, and then just how I was physically feeling, I felt like I had to do something different, so I adopted this vegan lifestyle. It’s been almost five months now . Like Liam Hemsworth more and more people are discovering the superior health benefits of the vegan diet . According to Patty Johnson, global food analyst at Mintel: “Health trends motivating consumers to cut fat and cholesterol intake are by far the most dominant factors affecting the red meat market.” And Professor Robert Lawrence, director of the Center for a Livable Future at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, told NPR that his research agrees with this conclusion: “Health concerns still remain the No. 1 reason people might consider cutting back on meat. “ Besides the desire to look and feel better, non-vegetarian consumers also cite the rising costs of beef and the environmental benefits as reasons for reducing their meat consumption . The results of lots of people eating a little less meat are staggering. The world is indeed shifting, and for the better. Whether people are choosing whole plant foods or meat substitutes over animal products, the overall trend is less animal slaughter and healthier people.
🌱💪 If there’s one must-have complex carb you should stock in your pantry and include in your fitness nutrition plan, it’s the seemingly humble sweet potato. Depending on how they’re prepared, sweet potatoes can satisfy your craving for something savoury or sweet without derailing your diet plan .
Originally native to Central and South America, they are one of the oldest vegetables known to man. They have been consumed since prehistoric times as evidenced by sweet potato relics dating back 10,000 years that have been discovered in Peruvian caves .
They’re a great slow-digesting fuel for nearly any fitness goal. These orange-colored powerhouses promote stabilized blood glucose levels and are rich sources of vitamin A, B, and C, manganese, copper, and pantothenic acid .
Glycemic index, or GI, is a measure of how quickly a food raises your levels of blood sugar. Eating lower-GI foods tends to sustain your energy levels as these foods digest more slowly. Since sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index and glycemic load than white potatoes, they’re a better choice for your pre-workout meal to help give you that boost needed to push through a hard session. There’ll be some great recipes featuring sweet potatoes at http://www.riseofthevegan.com .
Sweet potatoes are loaded with fiber. Ignore fiber at their peril - fiber is essential for helping to control appetite, burn fat, maintain healthy digestion and build muscle. A 1-cup serving of sweet potatoes contains about 8 grams of fiber .
Potassium is a mineral that plays a big role in muscle control, electrolyte balance and nerve function. Athletes and others involved in intense training generally need more potassium than an average sedentary person, according to the Colorado State University Extension service. The average adult needs 4,700 milligrams of potassium daily; one large sweet potato provides around 694 milligrams, which amounts to roughly 15 percent of the minimum intake.
🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪🍌💪 Eat two bananas before a strenuous workout to pack an energy punch and sustain your blood sugar, and protect against muscle cramps during workouts and nighttime leg cramps due to the mineral potassium .
Bananas are known to reduce swelling, protect against developing type-2 diabetes, aid in weight loss, strengthen the nervous system and help with production of white blood cells, all due to the high level of vitamin B6 .
Bananas are good for your heart. Potassium, a mineral electrolyte that keeps electricity flowing throughout your body, which is required to keep your heart beating. Bananas’ high potassium and low sodium content may also help protect your cardiovascular system against high blood pressure, according to the FDA .
Bananas can be helpful in overcoming depression due to high levels of tryptophan, which the body converts to serotonin, the mood-elevating brain neurotransmitter. Plus, vitamin B6 can help you sleep well, and magnesium helps to relax muscles and protect against cramps .
Rich in pectin, bananas aid digestion and gently chelate toxins and heavy metals from the body .
Bananas help overcome depression due to high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin – the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter .
Some random banana facts: You can actually eat the banana peel (raw) if you wash it carefully, it’s very nutritious but maybe tastier cooked. Bananas do not grow on trees. The banana plant is classified as an arborescent (tree-like) perennial herb, and the banana itself is considered a berry. Nearly all the bananas sold in stores are cloned from just one variety, the Cavendish banana plant, originally native to Southeast Asia. India is the leading producer of bananas worldwide, accounting for 23 percent of the total banana production .

Rich Roll’s transition to world-recognised athlete started when at 40 he realised his health was being threatened by a poor lifestyle than involved use of alcohol and other drugs, poor diet and inactivity. Unable to climb his stairs, he adopted a whole food vegan diet and began to train.
His objective was to enter and ultramarathon, which is based on a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and marathon (26.2 mile) run. Unable to secure a place, Rich managed to gain entry to Ultraman 2008, a three day event based on Ironman in which distances are doubled. With only 6 months training he recorded the second fastest swim and finished 11th overall. In later years he returned to record improved performances.
Rich has been vegan since 2006, and was awarded the title of one of 2009’s ‘25 Fittest Guys in the World’ by Men’s Fitness Magazine. He is best known for his participation in the Ultraman World Championships, which involves a 6.2 mile swim, 261.4 mile cycle and 52.4 mile run over 3 days. In 2008 he recorded the second fastest time for the 10 km swim, beating many professional athletes and finishing 11th overall. In 2009 he won the swim and the first day, finishing 7th overall.
Rich and his training partner have also completed an amazing series of Ironman day events, completing five Ironman events in less than a week. Rich has been inventive in his research of food and nutrition and an outspoken supporter of veganism, adopting the 'Plant Strong!’ tagline. 💪🌱
