It was the distinct smell of dog that caught his immediate attention. Soma turned slowly to the man on the path, his eyes registering every detail of his form. There was a secondary scent mixed faintly with the dog, one that caught his attention more than the first. "You... smell of dog... and sensei. Who are you?"
The Beginnings of Blank Pages || new-generation
Sasuke crossed his arms over his chest as he heard the calling of the three names he’d read for at least four times now. He’d made sure to read their files excessively well. However, you could not learn everything about a person from a piece of paper, and he realized this, of course. But it seemed like a good place to start.
As he saw his genin-team walk up to him, his features didn’t change, save for dark eyes gliding over each of the three faces. Koharu, Ren, Soma. He repeated in his head as they lined up before him. At least they were easily distinguishable. He glanced over to Kiba, and found that he might have a bit more trouble with that.. He couldn’t quite catch his eye, but that wasn’t really important right now. He had three children waiting for him to speak up. Ah, well.. Here goes nothing.
A huff of air escaped him before speaking. "Hn, so this is my team, huh?" Again, obsidian eyes roamed over each of their faces, gauging, judging. The green-haired boy seemed the most enthusiastic, but Sasuke also knew he was probably the least skilled. The smallest of the three with a striking combination of reddish hair with green eyes, which reminded him strongly of Sakura, seemed rather passive, and the last of them.. The pensive-looking one, gave him a smile and words dripping with respect of which he didn’t know whether it was genuine or practiced. A brow rose and he continued. "We’ll see about that, actually." He answered the one named Koharu. Offering them a smirk for the first time since meeting them. "You have a test to pass."
A test. The three stiffened slightly, and Ren swallowed. Neither Soma nor Koharu were inherently surprised, only expectant. To say Sasuke was famous would have been an understatement. His skill was renowned, where as the trio were merely Genins, and not quite that yet.
"What?" Ren was the one to speak out, chest puffing defensively, "What do you mean we have to pass a test? We had to pass a bunch of tests just to get here? I don't want to write another dumb exam."
"Mn, that's another test you'd fail." Soma murmured.
"What was what?" Ren turned on his heel, nostrils flaring in quick huffs of air, only for Soma to turn his head and pointedly ignore him. Ren was steaming, but calmed down when Koharu spoke up, silently vowing to get back at Soma.
"What kind of test are we to take, sensei?" Koharu inquired. "What are the parameters?"
The students hadn’t slept? Try being a newfound jounin who’d only just been deemed ‘trustworthy’ by the hokage but on top of this new ‘acceptance’ was thrown into the deep with the pressure of taking on a jounin team. Naruto’d told him it’d be fun. Yeah, sure.. Tsunade had said it was a requirement to get him back into the village’s good graces, to gain trust and a good reputation. It’s what he’d do this for. but he had roamed the streets all night like he did when upset or stressed.
So there they were, waiting, all of them jounin together, in the hall in front of the classroom. Sasuke scanned the faces one by one, noticing Naruto’s tardiness. He sighed inwardly at that idiot’s habits that just wouldn’t change. The rest of them, there were familiars. But also people he’d never seen, which made sense for someone who’s left the village for so long. He rustled through the papers he’d received.Â

Hn.. Their grades were okay enough, except for one of them, he already dreaded having to go through extra training sessions to get him up to par. But he was grateful enough for Tsunade choosing not to assign him any girls..
Ah, it was time. In a long line, the newly asserted sensei walked into the room, lining up in front of a class, dozens of pairs of eyes full of wonder directed at them. Within seconds Sasuke had spotted the three kids that looked like the picture in his files. Hmm.. They do not look like a team yet, he noted.
God he didn’t want to do this.. Dark eyes were set in a serous expression, as was the rest of a porcelain visage. The teams were called upon, and he waited patiently for his own to assemble.
Most of the teams were arranged and paired up with their new senseis fairly quickly. Soma, Ren and Koharu were among the first to find their sensei, who had been among the first to step into the classroom. As they were called forth to join their jonin captain, all three made their way to the front of the classroom, Koharu making it there first with Ren and Soma lined up behind him. The three stared up at their sensei, each reaching their own conclusions.
Of the three, Ren looked the most impressed with the man -- taller than he was, toned and brimming with skill. Soma was more apathetic, taking his sensei in with calculated care, measuring the way he looked, the way he stood and the slightest changes in expression before fully meeting his eyes again.
If Koharu did either, he didn't show it. Instead he offered a tight, professional smile and dipped his head to his new sensei in respect. "It is an honour to train under you, sensei." The dark haired boy looked up to meet his eyes, but said nothing more.

If any student had slept the night before, it would have been a miracle. Now that they were graduating, the atmosphere was heavy with anticipation, ready to pop with the shared excitement, nervousness and pride. The classroom was bright with morning sun, and there was not a person in the room inattentive when the sensei spoke. The speech he gave was heartwarming, and only added to the excitement.
The three sat in separate corners of the room. Soma in the second last row, leaning half against the wall and half against the desk. Of all the students, he looked the most apathetic to what was happening, his eyes drifting from the teacher to the other students, then back to the front and center of the room again. Ren sat central to the class, eyes locked on their sensei and smile wide, though he had, without a doubt, received the lowest grades of the graduating class. Koharu sat opposite of Soma, and he too, paid full attention to the teacher, though his attentiveness was out of respect more than anticipation.
Of those sorted into their new squads, the trio was among the first. Team Sasuke. Ren's attention faltered immediately after hearing the listing of his teammates, eyes darting as he searched the classroom for the familiar faces. Soma had merely breathed a sigh, irritated to be paired with at least one of his new teammates, and Koharu made a silent listing of all the potential new teams in his head.
Once they were all sorted, each of the new senseis -- save for one, Koharu noted -- filed into the room to collect their new students, Koharu, Ren and Soma waiting to be called upon by their new instructor.
