Tender Timing

There was nothing easy in their lives, not since SHIELD, not since a long time before that. Jemma could barely look at Skye once the words had been verbalised because she knew the damage she was likely causing with the admission that had taken so much courage to form.
Jemma could feel herself falling apart and leaving was for Skye’s protection. They’d had to rely on each other so much recently that it would be a cruelty to make the other woman witness the mess she had only been delaying. Constantly putting off the fact that soon or later she would fall apart and when she did fixing her would be quite a task. As much as she still refused to officially talk to anyone about what was going on in her head, Jemma feared she’d gotten too close to Skye to be able to not want to involve her and it frightened her to think that she might hurt Skye even more than she knew leaving would. It was a choice but it was also a gamble to work out which would hurt less in the long run.
She didn’t want to be one of the too many people to hurt Skye.
Nothing would ever be simple in their lives though, Jemma taking far too long to look at the woman again as she gave a small sigh. Courage, Jemma reminded herself softly. The same monotone that her thoughts now all seemed, shades of grey but nothing really different from the next burst of fear or guilt.
“I don’t know yet.” Jemma shook her head, deciding to be completely honest as hazel eyes hesitantly met Skye’s. “I’m considering it though.”
Skye didn't know what she would do without Jemma. Even if the feelings weren't there. Even if this has been months ago, before everything happened. Back when they were just learning to be friends. She could hardly remember anything before running up to hug a still alive Jemma. Watching Jemma almost disintegrate in the face of a fatal virus. Jemma had turned from just a person to Skye's best friend. Her family. And now someone she possibly loved. Probably. Definitely.
"Considering it," Skye let the words out under her breath. She wanted to know what they felt like. Maybe the potential was better than the absolute. But it didn't feel that way.
She wanted to scream out to Jemma. "Don't leave! You're all I have left here." Anywhere. But she couldn't. She couldn't be selfish. She wanted Jemma to be happy. And if leaving would make her happy, then she'd just have to accept it. Even if she didn't understand it.
"Why? Why now?"

"That’s… well… different.”
"Alright, Simmons. Whatever you say. I'll pretend to be more careful next time."

Jemma Simmons had spent most of her life watching the timer on her wrist count down eagerly. Her parents always told her that when it happened, it would happen, and that she shouldn’t worry over it. But she did anyways.
She spent most of her time wondering what her soulmate would be like, anyways. Would they be clever like her? Would they think she was a freak, an overintelligent nutcase? The latter option terrified her the most. She wanted to make a good impression on whoever she was meant to spend her life with.
Time went on, Jemma joining SHIELD, ending up in a lab with her best friend. They’re sent to LA first, following the trail of some Rising Tide hacker and an apparent superhero.
She was in the lab when Ward and Coulson returned with the hacker, Jemma looking curiously out of the glass walls when Fitz flicked her and pointed at her timer. 00:00:00.
It couldn’t possibly count, could it? It wasn’t a proper meeting— but still, her timer is cheerfully blinking all zeroes at her.
The moment she got a chance, she took off to corner the woman— Skye, she recalled. Hesitantly Jemma tapped her shoulder, holding up her wrist by way of greeting.
"It hit zero when you were passing the lab."
-
"Oh, well, that too," she admitted, nodding somewhat. Her eyes dropped a little at Skye’s words, a soft exhale filtering through her lips. "You do what you need to do, Skye. But I won’t always be here. I mean, I’m not leaving the team. Not at all. So I’ll be gone as well."
"Well, what if I came with?" Skye's motive for getting on the plane was one thing. But here was another. It wasn't exactly what she had been expecting, but it definitely was something. "Maybe for a little while, anyway."
Ignore the Scorched Pajamas || Jemma & Skye

Jemma couldn’t hold back the tears any longer and began sobbing into Skye’s shoulder. All the pain and anger she’d been feeling poured down her face.
She’d lost her best friend, been betrayed, and her whole world shattered in one mighty swoop. It was all just too much sometimes.
Skye wanted to be strong. For Jemma. But she could feel tears falling onto her shirt. She felt slight shakes coming from the girl's body. She wasn't surprised by the tug in the back of her eyes. She wanted to be strong and hold it in. But she couldn't.
She too had been left decimated in the wake of Ward and Garrett's destruction. And she'd been doing so well at translating it to anger. But feeling Jemma in her arms changed it. She knew she could be vulnerable, if just for a few moments.
While she didn’t have a sixth sense, she had a fairly reliable gut feeling and her gut feeling was telling her that she was being watched. Hand sliding towards a balanced knife she left concealed in her backpack, she peered behind her using the reflection from the glass. Maybe she was just paranoid. Lee always seemed to be paranoid, nowadays but better safe than sorry.
Skye had only been out to pick up some more memory for her computer when she saw a familiar face. She couldn't quite place why she felt like she already knew this girl. She was sure she hadn't met her before. She ignored it for a few days but the feeling kept coming back to her. She had to know more. So she hung around the same place, around the same time, for almost a week. She finally saw her again, and this time she realized why she looked familiar. But it couldn't be possible, could it? So she followed the girl. And when she realized the girl knew she was there, she finally spoke up.
"I won't bite, you know."
-
"You’re exaggerating. Adding vegetables is common for chicken noodle soup. Just because they added more ethnic veggies didn’t mean it was wrong.” She knew she was kind of bullshitting her, but it really was her own fault for going with something other than the sandwiches. “Oh yeah. Diner would be perfect.”
"Grilled cheese and french fries. Definitely perfect." Skye had been on a grilled cheese kick the past few days. It was simple. She'd been working so hard, she needed something simple. "Hey, remember that project I was working on last week? Do you think you could take a look at it later tonight? I know I'm missing something and it's kinda killing me."
-
"I’m technically not a field agent- of course it’s different for me. It’s not very often that we have to factor in life or death circumstances whilst working in the lab.”
"What about the dangerous chemicals? And lab explosions and stuff? Pretty sure I heard a super loud bang coming from the lab the other night."

"Well I needed…I needed the blasted computer to work how I wanted! And Fitz…Fitz can’t do it and…I just…" she bit her lip to stop the tears that would surely begin flowing soon.
"I just want it to work," she murmured, not really talking about the computer anymore.
Skye could see the tears threatening Jemma's eyes. "Oh, Simmons," she exhaled. She wrapped her arms around Jemma and pulled her into a tight hug. "It's not..." Skye didn't know what to say.
Prelude To A Brand New Life // Raina & Skye

"So… Is there any particular reason you came knocking?" Raina asked as she lifted her gaze from the coffee maker and up to Skye.
Raina could guess the reasons without much effort, but small talk was so important when it came to building long lasting relationships.
"You know why." Skye had spent too much time on her laptop. Followed too many leads. She didn't want to end up there. At the house of a stranger she knew she couldn't trust. A stranger who worked with Ward.
"My father."

Jemma hesitated before answering, letting out a prolonged sigh. “Yes, I was. I was a silly child, you know. Very lonely. I’d always hoped my soulmate would understand what I was saying, wouldn’t think I was some sort of freak.” She smiled faintly at Skye, nodding. “I think I am.”
"That was a pretty great kiss," Skye said with the slightest wink. She truly was charmed by Jemma. It was unexpected, but obviously there. And it scared her, to think that maybe she could fall in love with this girl. "I'm still going to run, you know. That's what I do. Who I am. I don't know if that will ever change." She didn't want to hurt Jemma. "I'll come back," she offered.
-
"You don’t have to be a genius to factor in your own personal safety, Skye. If you had died… I don’t know what we would all do."
"We all do it. Every day. Would we have really joined SHIELD if we wanted to factor in our personal safety? Maybe it's different for you."
-
"But you didn’t bother to consider the consequences before you did it?”
"I'm not you, Simmons."

"Yes, him." Jemma had to shove down a sudden wave of jealousy towards her best friend, shrugging. "He’s yet to meet his soulmate. I think he’s still got a year and some left on it. He’s so anxious about it."
Skye still couldn't understand the idea of that anxiety. She had spent so long not caring. She forgot that other people really did. She squinted her eyes and looked at Jemma. "You were anxious too, weren't you?" She already knew the answer. "And how about now? Happy with the results?"

"Skye, that’s a nice name," Jemma offered with a bright smile in the other girl’s direction. Her accent sounded American, which Jemma found very odd given that she was fairly certain there were magical schools in America. Not that she was going to complain, diversity at Hogwarts was always wonderful. "I’d shake your hand but…" she waved a dirt covered hand in Skye’s direction and then looked down at her tie, as if checking that the colours hadn’t magically changed in the last ten minutes, which wasn’t entirely impossible given where they were. "Yes, though I’ve yet to prove myself exceptionally brave." She was smart, analytical minded, but she would not have thought of herself as particularly brave, still there had to be a reason she’d been sorted into Gryffindor and not Ravenclaw. "No, I don’t think we have met," she said with a shake of her head, which was quite frankly ridiculous, how could you be in the same school year as someone for six years and have never met them? It seemed odd to her, but she had been to muggle schools where the largest class size was thirty and the most number of students you had in any one year was sixty. "So, it’s nice to meet you, Skye."
Skye shrugged off Jemma's comment about the dirt on her hands. She looked down at her own, still perfectly clean having not yet started any kind of work. It was typical Skye. She had spent the beginning of the lesson helping the guy next to her. She probably didn't understand any better than he did, but he looked like he was near exploding with anxiety and it had seemed like the right thing to do. Skye looked down at her own tie. She pulled it out of her sweater while Jemma was speaking, just to take a look at it. She had never been impressed by the yellow and black, but the combination had become so comfortable over the years. "It's nice to meet you to. But I've got to say, I don't think you need to prove yourself to be exceptionally brave. I think it's just something inside? Well, what do I know? I freaked over a spider the other day. Granted it was taller than I am." She smiled, hoping for a laugh from the other girl.
Just Next Door || Jemma & Skye
-
Jemma followed behind Skye, a little timidly but not too far away from her new neighbour. She hadn’t been expecting to be this welcomed into the other girls home so quickly and given a tour. She had expected to help carry a couple of boxes in and then be on her way, back to her place to live her life. “Where did you move from?” Jemma asked, trying to get a conversation so that she didn’t seem boring or awkward. That wouldn’t be a fantastic first impression and of course she didn’t even want to get into the subject of school life and work, whenever she spoke to someone about that subject, she always thought that she was showing off how smart she was, when in reality she didn’t think that she was better than anyone else because of her knowledge, she would just tell them what they want to know.
Skye froze. It was brief, but obvious. She hoped Jemma didn't notice. "Where did I move from?" She didn't have an answer. The last place she had lived had been Miles' apartment. Before that? Nowhere, really. She couldn't very well tell this girl, practically a stranger, that she lived out of her van for as long as she could drive. And that she hadn't lived anywhere for several years before that. "Oh, you know," she tried to play it cool. "Just the other side of town." She wanted to get away from the subject as quickly as possible. "Have you lived here long? It's too residential for my taste, but there's got to be something cool going on around here. Right?"
