inside the cardigan music video
We open on a piano with a broken key: B. The key is just left of center, or “Middle C,” and Taylor begins her opening chords very close to put not quite touching or using the broken key.
This is our first hint that our narrator or protagonist is not whole and is creating her story while dancing around and tracing scars that keep her from some form of true self or full authenticity.
That this is “B” and is almost centered, immediately creates a close connection with the character Betty who appears later on folklore and who is in possession of a cardigan.
Taylor begins to play, using music to explore herself and her world. The magical and beautiful possibilities she discovers and creates within her art pull her in, and in wonderment, she climbs inside the music. This is framed by lyrics that underscore both her naivety and that all along, she has known herself.
Once fully inside the world her music creates, the songs flow from Taylor like water, the lifeforce sustaining everything around her, making everything lush, green and full of possibility. The space feels beyond the reach of time and private, secret almost.

At some point, just as she begins to sing about the only things the lovers ever really needed, she notices something is going on and peeks into her piano bench. She answers the call, and finds herself lost at sea, in danger of drowning in a storm we can’t help but wonder if she made. The flood of her music, the expanse of emotions - each became overpowering, isolating, and felt dangerous.
But she finds a life raft: a piano. We know the piano is the symbol of her art, her ability to explore life and feelings both hers and not. She swims through the storm to reach the piano and clutches it, as the camera zooms out to reveal she is alone in the middle of a storm with no shore or help in sight.
Then we see the piano is named folklore.
In order to process the storm and sea, which she has had a hand in creating, in order to save herself, she has to dive into folklore, creating a narrative that makes whole the fragments, images, and melodies of her memories, her history, the image she has created for the public, her loves, and her pain in a carefully constructed web of truth and fantasy.
Taylor made folklore for herself, to reconcile all she has made and all that has happened in her life and career in a gathering of threads.
For those of us who listen, it is a clear statement that we will never know everything about Taylor, but the little truths have always been there. She has written her own folklore, about herself, as the ultimate reclaiming of her narrative.
