River’s attention left his phone and his head snapped toward the other person in the room, “What the fuck did you just say?” He was up in seconds and his fist connected with the other’s jaw so quickly he barely had time to process what he had done. “Who the fuck are you?”

“River,” he spoke as soon as he answered the phone. He had done so the moment he caught his son’s name on the screen. His tone was leaning toward concern more than anything else, but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t surprised to hear from him like this. His brow furrowed, and replied with a warm yet clear, “I would have to agree. Where are you?”

He immediately regretted calling him. He couldn’t remember a time when he actually wanted to spend time with Elijah, let alone ask him for help. Deep down he knew he needed to do this, but his first instincts were to hang up and start running. He bit his lip and took a breath before he answered, “I’m actually in the drive way,” he admitted, “I just haven’t been able to get out of the car.”

“No, not yet. I’ve just been trying to work this all out.”

“Shame, I thought you’d actually done something exciting.” the hybrid mused, taking a drink before setting his glass fown. “No matter, there’s no changing the past now is there? We can only move forward.”

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint,” he rolled his eyes. River clenched his jaw and looked away from Klaus, “Maybe you should share that with the rest of this damn city.”

“I’m not the only one you have to convince.” Alexander offered meekly as his heart ached a’s t the reminder that Kai was gone, and that the city was starting to crumble right in front of his very eyes. “You didn’t have to tell me. I’m not involved, but I appreciate you taking the time to tell me your side.”

“Trust me, I fucking know that. I’m just so confused and I have no idea how this happened or who to trust.”

Katherine looked at her son, her expression unreadable as she listened to him. He sounded scared, confused, and afraid, and she hated every moment of it. She didn’t say a word as she approached him, arms crossed as she looked up at him. “ I believe you.”

Those three words sent a flood of relief through River’s body. His shoulders lost some of the tension they had been carrying over the last few days and his chest felt significantly less tight. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep himself from smiling; he always prided himself on keeping his composure. “I don’t know why someone would accuse me of that. I’m so fucking confused.”

“I don’t have the greatest relationship with my family.”

River’s finger lingered over the call button next to his father’s name. He hated this. He hated being weak and he hated that he needed Elijah’s help with this. He wasn’t even sure where he stood on the matter. Whether he believed River did or did not do it. And there were definitely good reasons for Elijah to not believe him or even want to help him. He took a deep breath and pressed the call button. As the line rang, his stomach twisted in to knots and once his father answered, he swallowed the lump in his throat. “I think we need to talk, Dad.”
