A long week of little sleep has left me a little frazzled. Between the boxes, the emails and the needles, I’m in need of some distraction. Tell me about your favourite poem?

Favorite poem? I couldn’t tell you... however, I remember this old, dusty book my grandmother had in her study. It was an anthology of poems. none of them seemed to fit quite well together, but I loved it.

Oh I wouldn’t want that sort of pressure put on my daughter. To try to fill your shoes would be quite a feat.

I’m always fond of a nice Malbec, but some people seem to loathe a deep red.

Back in the Ring

River had been working through some stress lately. He was a natural worrier, and his mind had a tendency to race and overwhelm him. River had done more of his workouts at home lately, so he decided to go back to Masterson’s to relieve some stress. It was nice to get back to boxing. He jogged to the gym, got his locker and put his phone, wallet, wedding ring and car keys inside. He always took his ring off for boxing, because it affected how he wrapped his hands and River could not afford any injuries to his hands.

He started at the bag, just warming up for a while before someone came up and asked if he wanted to go a round or two. River didn’t know this guy at all. He was younger, in shape and clearly enthusiastic about boxing. “Um.. just an easy round. Nothing to the face.” He said with a small smile, in an attempt to be friendly. After a few minutes of chatter, River found himself in the center of the ring with a stranger throwing punches at him.

It took a little bit of time, but by the end of their match, they were both worn out. River smiled, shook the man’s hand and decided he was done for the day. Going back into the locker room, it wasn’t odd that the other man followed. River was about ready to open his locker when the younger man came closer and invited him to grab a drink. River paused, unsure of what this was. Was the guy flirting with him? Just being friendly? He rubbed the back of his neck. “Maybe another time?” River unwrapped his hands and visibly put his wedding ring on in front of the guy. “It’s date night and we have an early reservation.”

Staying Awake

Ever since the entire process began, River had not been sleeping quite right. Oscillating between excitement and worry, there was always something keeping him up. Tonight it was worry. With Mario in a deep sleep beside him, he slipped out of bed. Padding lightly into the living room he grabbed his glasses and his laptop. Between the two of them, River always was the worrier. To ease his mind, he would sit down and read.

Opening his laptop, he began researching as much as he could into surrogacy and egg donation. It was all just repetition of things he had already heard, but he wanted reassurance that all would go as planned. There were too many scenarios going through his mind that were unsettling. What if the egg donor wanted to keep the baby? What if the surrogate didn’t take care of her health? What if they had been lied to somewhere in the process? He just wanted all of his fears calmed down.

Hours into his various searches he heard a familiar door creak. Quickly closing all of his tabs he looked up to see Mario staring at him. “I was just.. I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t want to wake you.” He said softly. It wasn’t long before Mario urged him to come back to bed and try to get some sleep. River closed his computer and walked back to the bedroom taking Mario’s hand. For the rest of the night, River felt Mario’s arm around him as he stared at the window, watching the sun rise.

Gosh, it’s no wonder you two have been in such good moods! The slightly cryptic happy posts all make sense now! How long do you think it’ll be before you find the right surrogate?

Yes, we are thrilled. I honestly couldn’t say. The agency seems very efficient and they know what we are looking for and will show us who they think is the best fit.

To think I was only unpacking these boxes a month ago, to be thinking about packing them once again. At least the time allows me some grace in organising my vast eclectic library into some kind of order and donate some of the books which do not need to make the trip across country to Boston. Is anyone looking to add to their shelves?
