Measure 1 is needed now more than ever!

There is good news and downright scary news today. The good news is that yesterday, Tuesday the 28th, the North Dakota Supreme Court overturned Judge Wickham Corwin’s ruling that stopped the ban on non FDA approved chemical abortion drugs (Here is the story from the Associated Press). The Red River Women’s Clinic uses a combination of drugs, and one of them is not a drug made for abortion and is thus not approved. The Law goes in effect today I am gleaning (Wednesday the 29th of October) which is also the day they kill around 25 girls and boys each week. 20% of them they use these drugs to kill. So that means either 20% less abortions today (Praise God!) or they have to find another way to do it (which I cannot imagine, sadly enough, being terribly difficult).

The Scary part is this ruling was made by default. 4 out of 5 judges would have had to say the law was unconstitutional (that there was a right to abortion in the constitution like Judge Wickham Corwin ruled). Fortunately 4 out of 5 did not. What I heard from ND Choose Life was that apparently only 2 out of 5 said that a right to abortion was not found in the state constitution. 2 out of 5 said it was in there (Yikes)! And one was non committal. Measure 1 will solve this matter and make it really clear that the “right” to “life” and “safety” come first in the constitution for a reason, and this really does apply to “all individuals” including the little guys in our society.

This is a good time to remember that the Judge of all the earth is watching. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Let’s aim to please God, a just judge and loving Father! A Judge who will judge the judges, a loving Father who longs for His children to be imitators of Him and be faithful parents, even fathers to the fatherless.

Measure 1: "Right" Must Be Protected, Not "Life"

[Editor's Note: This is a personal note to a friend by Dane Johansen done in response to this false add that has been running in North Dakota. We asked him if we could share it. It has been edited to be a non personal stand alone letter]

I've spent many years being uninformed and not caring enough to look into the legislative motions of our state, and how they affect our lives. But I'm waking up now and beginning to give thought to these Measures and what they're about, because ultimately, these Measures are about us, the people of North Dakota and keeping power where our Constitution intends it to be.

In the case of Measure 1, that's exactly what this Measure accomplishes: it keeps the power with the people, and protects us from unfair government. Here's how:

Measure 1 does not protect life; it protects the RIGHT to life. It's utterly key to understand this distinction. Rights by definition put power to the people. Whether or not the individual uses his or her said right is up to the individual. In other words this only bolsters end of life care decisions. It puts more power and authority into the people’s hands not diminishes it. It does not mandate that I must live, but that I have the right to live. Addressing Dr. Jacobsen's fear about medical care and the concerns about Wills and DNRs, can't you see that Measure 1 reinforces the individuals' right in these situations? It doesn't take them away like so many people have been mislead to believe.

This is not a new self enacting law, this is an amendment to the constitution that more deeply defines the right to life for “all” people which is already established in our Constitution. It does not create any new ordinances. It's a governing principle aimed directly at an activist judge who excludes unborn citizens from their right to life through his argument that the ND constitution gives unlimited right to abortion. Measure 1 says, "Your interpretation is wrong. ‘All individuals’ includes infants in the womb. This says the Constitution." This is power to the people, namely those unborn citizens.

This Measure does not illegalize birth control, emergency contraceptives, or IUD's , like has been mentioned. It also does not put an end to IVF, like so many people believe to be true. It also does not enforce investigations of miscarriages, which I agree, could be very traumatizing. This Measure also does not end abortion. It maintains the people's power through our elected legislators to regulate it (which is approved by the federal government). A "No" to Measure 1 opens the door to slay the laws that power such regulation. [Editor’s note: The Supreme Court’s Interpretation of the federal constitution per Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion (even as extreme as partial birth abortion).Other federal rulings since that decision have allowed states to regulate it, but we need state level constitutional backing to accomplish and uphold these regulations. The state constitution cannot contradict nor over rule the federal.]

With all this in mind, if you have pride to vote for a Measure that aims to ensure just this, honoring the right to life for all people, especially unborn children, wouldn't you vote “Yes” for Measure 1?

It’s crazy isn't it? A lot of messaging around the Measure is twisted. We must ask ourselves, "Which messaging though"? We need honorable sources. Check out what John Ashcroft, ex-Governor of Missouri has to say about Measure 1 in ND. Missouri passed a similar amendment about 30 years ago and saw none of the opposition's alleged concerns come to fruition. See here for yourself:
