tinkertony:
The Tinker was, in true Tony Stark style, late for the party. He didn’t remember exactly what it was in aid of, either. But Jarvis had shut down his lab in order to force him to attend.
He’d headed straight for the bar as soon as he’d arrived. Nobody expected any less of him, really. And ever since regaining his telepathic senses, the huge crowd of politicians and businessfolk and celebrities provided a background buzz that irritated him - unless he drowned it out with alcohol.
But Tony’s sense for time energy couldn’t be drained out. Not long after he’d drained his first glass of scotch, he felt the prodding in his brain that he hadn’t felt in so long. There was something different about it - but he didn’t care. The Tinker sat up straight, staring around the room.
A woman by the door, with flyaway curls and a stunning dress caught his eye. Tony tilted his head for a second, checking. Then he nodded. He stood and slid around the other guests, moving smoothly to her side. “Looks like your glass is empty,” he said by way of greeting, nodding to the champagne glass. He took a moment to give her a sweeping look, his trademark smirk fixed in place.
River spotted him from halfway across the room. To be completely honest, she doubted that she would have missed him even if there wasn't wave after wave of time energy emitting from him. Definitely, without a doubt, a time lord. Of course, when he stopped in front of her, face wearing the smirk that generally made her hand twitch to slap it off a face-- but she tolerated it, and the elevator eyes that he didn't even try to veil. Her drink was, in fact, quite empty. "And so it is..." She smiled. "Luckily, I know the cure." In a moment a man walked carrying a tray laden with champagne. She swiftly picked another and deposited her own. She took a sip, eyes roaming up and down his form languidly. "Now that we're all properly equipped." She took a step closer to him, clearly invading the bubble of appropriate space, but the laughing flirtation never left her face. "Should I say it, or should you?" Her free hand smoothed his collar that had been twisted slightly out of place. When she looked at his face again, the joke was gone from her expression. "Guess it's left to me... What is a man like you doing in a place like this?" Man, hah. He was anything but a human being.
The Doctor very rarely slept, so when he dozed off in the console chair she didn't have the heart to wake him. Her hands instead worked fluidly at the console, deftly flying the old girl. But then she heard him. Glancing over her shoulder she saw a bead of sweat on his brow and a deepening frown. "No rest for you, my love," she murmured softly, going to his side. When he called out, she was already there. Her thin fingers brushed his hair gently. "Shhh. Wake up now. It's only a bad dream."
The Doctor was having a nightmare about the Time War. He has been having this same dream for quite awhile. Always the same images. Gallifreyans and Daleks dying. Children screaming for their parents. It sickened him to his very core. He shot awake at hearing River. He turned his head away from her ad got sick. “R-River?” He panted unsure of his current surroundings and companions.

When he opened his eyes, it left a ache resonating to the core of River. She couldn't stand to see a man who has done so much good in the universe, who'd sacrificed all of his greatest personal aspirations for the good of the citizens of that universe, tortured-- in every sense of the word. She sat down on the arm of the chair with an expression she hoped gave away nothing but caring, calm reassurance. "Yes, dear. It's me." Her hand settled over his own and gave a light squeeze. "You're safe." Of course, he was-- he was the Doctor, and she was River Song-- willing to destroy all of creation to protect him. There was nothing she could do but this she could do to protect him from the specters that haunted him from the inside out. "You nodded off when we left Anura."
River was in her element. There was something about her that simply sparkled in this atmosphere. Surrounded by the super-rich and over-educated, champagne glass delicately perched between her fingers and a roguish grin plastered on her lips, River looked every bit the New York City socialite she was playing. In all honesty, she was hardly interested in what the odious man in front of her was saying. Something about fiscal responsibility blah blah, corporate sponsorship blah blah; it was physically difficult for her not to role her eyes in response. She was here for one reason only—the charity auction held later that evening, in which relics of untold worth would be hauled out away from their protective cases and laid bare to her deft hands. One of these relics had a worth more untold than the rests, and would catch her enough at the Rings market to live very comfortably for a few… decades at least. She snipped back, right on cue, “You are a devil, sir,” and the undeserving object of her affections practically preened in response. This continued like the ebb and flow of the sea, patterned and performed and pretty boring, until a familiar feeling sent a tingling down her spine. Time energy. The Doctor? Her feet moved entirely of their own bidding, so startled by the revelation of this energy. She closed her eyes and sought it out. Something wasn’t right, it didn’t feel familiar the way the Doctor’s presence did. Perhaps if she had been more than part time-lord, she would have immediately known, but River had no choice but to follow the sensation into the next room where the bar sat on the far wall. “Now… which one of you is the big bad time lord?” She muttered under her breath giving a flourish to the stunning ball gown (which hugged her in all the right places, if she did say so) she’d picked for the affair.

// AWW YOURE SO NICE. Also, that made me laugh very loudly at work-- good job.
There had been rumors. She'd heard whispers while walking the market streets of the Rings of Akhaten. Things were affecting the time vortex in an odd way. Whole fleets of alien ships vanishing from the universe in the sector of the Milk Way close to the Earth. Relics of odd import being selected by buyers who have no idea of their importance, puppets of others plans. River found her curiosity roused. It wasn't like her to miss a mysterious upset in time and space-- she might even find something to turn a profit, and a little carnage if she got very lucky. That had led her, haphazardly as usual, to the shores of America. Well, not really the shore, but the time vortex manipulator could only be so precise. The dark street was entirely vacant. She paused. Being deserted at night wasn't that unusual, but-- it was entirely vacant. She pulled her handheld from her belt and began tentative scans. “... Nothing,” the quiet awe of the moment gave way into shock. Something wasn't right here. She began taking tentative steps, and each one left a haunting feeling churning more and more dangerously in her stomach. Where are the people The street met a dead-end abruptly. A pillar rose as high as she could see in the night, metal and cold with cords of all size routing energy from one part to the next. She scanned intensively, but it wasn't easy to penetrate the codes. “Dammit. Work.” She eagerly hit buttons on the screen of her hand-held. It took a few moments, but she finally triggered the pillar. “... Cyber-technology? On earth?” But seconds later the tower began to lit up, lights igniting upward, and the familiar voice of a cyberman, “ALL CITIZENS REGISTERED FOR UPGRADE” blared at unbelievable volume on a manic loop. Someone was probably going to notice that... River turned and ran, but she was too slow. The Cyber Army had already been alerted. They came out of every corner. The monotonous voices asking for her cooperation, firing shots, and her laser gun was from her belt in an instance. It was futile, though. The ones that fell were instantly replaced by replicates. As she rounded the corner, they caught up with her. She screamed and thrashed, but they took her mercilessly towards the tower. It didn't take long to realize it was futile. She settled down and let them take her where they intended. “Pity,” she told the hulk of metal on her right, “the hallucinogenic lipstick was a complete waste.”
