The Villain Was Right Podcast: Frozen

Craig: There’s something that bothers me about this movie and that is that every sort of aside that we see with Hans where no one else is watching him, he actually has these cute little smiles like, I’m so in love! But those are supposed to be the moments where we see his true villainous intentions but he’s never evil at all until the end.

Leonard: And he has that song at the beginning, Love Is An Open Door, but nobody lies in Disney songs!

Craig: That’s the other thing!

Leonard: Even in the Little Mermaid, Ursula says things like “I’m gonna screw this little mermaid” as an aside. Villains will straight up say their true intentions in song.

Craig: Because the convention is that when you sing it’s what you’re truly feeling.

Leonard: And true love has such a special place in Disney lore that I think we have to believe that these guys are actually in love. But there’s this whole conspiracy theory that the real villains of Frozen are the trolls. Because the trolls have said that they can change minds and they do it to Anna in the beginning, so the trolls want to install Kristof as the king because that will be better for them because Kristof is their kid and they even have that line “Get the fiance out of the way and the whole thing will be fixed.” So the theory is that they end up doing like a whammy on Hans and then Hans suddenly changes because everything up until then aligns perfectly to them being in love.
