RIWP Open Air Institute 2017

In Motion: Exploring Movement in Rhode Island

To the outside world, summer for teachers is free time, time not spent thinking about school. To us at RIWP, however, summer is a time to reflect on and engage in new ways to evolve our practice.

The Open Air Institute provides a three-day, place-based outdoor personal and pedagogical experience for teachers to immerse themselves in the places that make Rhode Island so unique and so special--and subsequently take that learning back into our classrooms.

This summer, we will be exploring layers of movement, physical and beyond, as we traverse Rhode Island. Each day, the experiences will take shape in an urban/suburban/or rural area, specifically Pawtucket, Peace Dale, and Prudence for 2017.

Summer Writing Camps

The Rhode Island Writing Project is excited to announce the return of Summer Writing Camps for children in grades K-12! 

The RIWP Summer Writing Camp is a program designed for elementary, middle, and high school students who enjoy writing.  Our 2017 programs will take place July 10-21, 2017, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 to 12:00.

Staffed by experienced local educators, our camps help students develop their writing as they share their work in a lively, interactive, and supportive community.

Camp features include:

Writing exercises designed to jumpstart thinking and improve each writer's craft

Exploration of the work of published authors to use as models in a variety of genres

Freedom to explore individual writing interests

Opportunities to collaborate with instructors and peers and to receive constructive feedback for revision 

A space for students to see themselves as writers with individual voices

At the end of the program, each participant will publish a self-selected piece in a compilation of student writing.  All students will receive a copy of their group's anthology.

Groups are arranged by grade level.

Location: North Providence High School 1828 Mineral Spring Avenue North Providence, RI 02904 (Recent high school graduates are also welcome to attend.)

This year's conference will feature Linda Christensen, from the Oregon Writing Project, who has gained notoriety based on her Social Justice in the classroom approach. Our conference will feature workshops facilitated by educators from all over Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and focus on at least one of the following topics: Power of Narrative; Composing & Crafting Writing; Multimodal and Multi-genre Writing; and/or Social Justice/Advocacy.

Call for Proposals

We would love for you to be a part of this day! The Rhode Island Writing Project is seeking proposals for 75-minute workshops to be held after our keynote. Please download the proposal form here and consider submitting an idea for a workshop, or send this along to an educator who may be interested. The submission deadline is Wednesday, February 3, 2016. We hope you will join us this year for our annual Spring Conference. Now more than ever, the teaching of writing and literacy is part of our collective mission as educators, from the primary grades through college. The Rhode Island Writing Project Spring Conference is a great way to reinvigorate and renew your pedagogy and practice as teachers of writing!

We are excited to announce our 2015 keynote speaker, Barry Lane, an internationally known author and speaker, who travels the world sharing his unique style of motivating students to become better writers.

Barry Lane is a writer who teaches writing and the founder of Discover Writing Company, which for the last 20 year has provided professional development in writing and reading for teachers K-12 and beyond. His popular books help aspiring writers of all ages hone their craft and find their unique voices. Barry has presented and spoken in all 50 states and in many countries abroad. His presentations are hilarious but underneath the humor there is always the same strong message: Writers write for the same reason readers read—to find out what’s going to happen.

The RIWP Annual Spring Conference is a professional development opportunity for K-16 teachers looking for innovative ways to inspire and engage students with writing and literacy. Those who attend will have the opportunity to hear from and meet with a nationally regarded leader in teaching, to participate in workshops, and to network with other educators.
