Picture this. Serena goes on secondment (to the states?) and Bernie keeps AAU afloat in her absence. A new lad starts on the ward, a bit too cheeky and cocky. Fancies he has a shot with Bernie. Flirts constantly.
Bernie being the adorable gay disaster she is just completely ignorant of this. Continues work as normal.
Serena returns. The new lad has never met her before. He talks to her on her first day back, joking about Bernie inappropriately and revealing his intentions and how’s he’s being trying to crack the tough old army major. (He even says how strong she must be, how hot that is, how she could probably lift up someone his size. Oh, Serena says, you’re quite right. I don’t doubt she could lift me.The boy finds this slightly confusing, but persists with his foolish ramblings.) “So do you think I have a shot? What ya say?“
“I think her partner might have something to say about it,” Serena says.
“Oh, she never mentioned a husband.”
“No, some people don’t like to advertise their private business when it’s not necessary,” Serena says, “and no, she doesn’t have a husband.”
“Serena Wolfe,” Serena introduces herself with a firm handshake, “Bernie’s wife. Oh and her co-lead on this ward or in simpler terms your boss.” She flashes him a grin, before walking off leaving him with his mouth wide open and a ‘oh shit’ in his eyes.
“Oh, Serena don’t you’re thinking a bit hard on the boy?”
“I’m not being hard, I’m being nice. Nice as pie, in fact.”
“Every time you smile at him I think you terrify the life out of him bit by bit.”
Serena rolls her eyes. So the boy jumps whenever she’s near. Because she has been nice, even slightly flirtatious with him, and charm itself. Particularly to someone who had designs on her wife.
Bernie tells Serena to stop playing with the poor boy.
Serena says now where would the fun be in that?
