should she even be on the phone with hyun right now? sua knows that she needs to talk to him - that she should talk to him, considering the news. she also knows that hyun would be ultimately disappointed if he found out through others that she was selected for heartz instead of through her. there’s so many reasons that she should just tell him and get it over with, but she can’t help but think of the fact that he’s far too busy dealing with his soon to be comeback stage than to deal with her right now.
she shouldn’t be thinking this way. it’s only a thought that baek jiyoung poisoned her with. hyun has never seemed to care at all, and when he couldn’t talk he always told her so.
maybe sua is just feeling a little more guilty lately because of the situation - her questionable desire to be in the group versus the others who desperately want to be there, and whether or not she even belongs in sphere to begin with. perhaps they’re trying to tell her that she belongs, but she doesn’t feel like it. they made her feel like the odd girl out. that’s on them.
still, when hyun answers her call, it relaxes her - albeit slightly. her brow furrows together at the shakiness of his camera and the dark of the outside casting shadows on his bright smile. " are you smoking again?“ she asks dully, the disapproval clear on her face. perhaps that’s a bit hypocritical, considering all the shit she’s done in the past - but he’s a singer. he really shouldn’t be doing this kind of stuff now, and she’s long since stopped her own bad habits. for the most part, at least.
his dialect slips into his manner of speech and sua can’t help but snort. as much as she pretends to hate it, hyun knows all too well how much his busan dialect really moves her. that’s a secret between them, though. ” you flatter me.“ she says in a bored tone, leaning back into her pillows and sighing. ” you’re still tripping up your members? aren’t you coming back soon?“
this isn’t what they’re supposed to be talking about, but sua feels a little uneasy to bring it up fully on her own. she bites the inside of her cheek - although she’s told him that she has some news, it doesn’t exactly make her feel better. ” you’re disgusting.“ she mutters, shaking her head. ” did you do something eric should be mad at you for? be careful, or he’ll actually get a gang to kill you.“ biting her lip, she sits up with the phone still held to show her face. at this point, she should just bite the bullet. ” i’m the next girl, hyun.“
The disapproval is very apparent, both in her voice and expression on his phone screen, and he does visibly get a little sheepish (although it’s not enough to make him put out his cigarette). His smile just gets awkward for a moment, eyes flickering over to the gently smoking contraband held by his other hand, and he clears his throat, offering up a fairly weak excuse.
“Uh... I-- I haven’t had one in a while, and it’s just helping me loosen up a bit tonight.” Poor. Easily snappable with a gust of the wind. That’s how weak his excuse sounds, and he knows it. He knows she knows it because despite being a good actor on screen, he can be unfortunately transparent in his personal life. He can’t lie to Sua; her sharp gaze just sees through him.
As such, he tries to quickly move the conversation on, to something else other than his smoking to avoid the guilt as he’s held under her stare. He definitely feels like a guilty child who’s been caught with his hand in the cookie jar at times; one would think that would be enough to stop him but... somehow factors encourage the cycle to continue. He’s glad when he hears a snort from her -- his signal that he almost made her laugh -- and his grin returns to normal. Jonghyun tilts his neck, stretching the muscles in an effort to relieve the tension that has built up around there. “I just get a bit too focused and in the moment sometimes, you know? I wanna do well but I know I’m one of the weaker dancers in the group... But don’t worry! I’m not going to trip anyone up on stage!”
Somehow, her comment about him being disgusting just sends amusement through him and he laughs. It’s not exactly a compliment -- more of an insult, really -- but it’s more to do with him being that tiny bit proud about causing a reaction with his ‘joke’ than anything else. “I... don’t think I’ve done anything recently to make him mad at me... But I’m growing a bit paranoid, I keep thinking I’ll get kidnapped in a dark alley one night by gangsters who’ll put a bag over my head and then throw me into a van, and then tickle me to death, like in those movies.” He rambles a bit, typical Hyun behaviour as he gets caught up in one of his imaginative ideas, but Sua’s next words through the speakers of his phone cause him to pause, and he’s blinking at her. It’s as if he’s frozen in the call, except he isn’t, and he reanimates after a few seconds, very loudly.
“Next girl!? Kim Sua!? Holy shiiiiit! Whoaaaa, congratulations! Are you debuting this month? Next month? How’re you feeling!? Oh, man, the ‘next girl’--”
woohyun smiles at the younger, humming in sympathy. “i’ll bet.” he’s seen a handful of episodes, and knows that a lot of the content on running man is tiring, if not fun and exhiliarting. he doesn’t at all blame the other for being tired. “you’ll sleep like a rock, i’m sure.” he muses, chuckling. woohyun would at least, with how much he’s seen gone on the episodes. put the constant music promotions on top of that, and god. woohyun can feel the added exhaustion in his bones, even if he’s had a few hours of rest.
“it is!” he beams. “gotta give some tender love and care to these babies.” he taps his throat in gesture, chuckling at his statement. he’s always drinking some sort of warm beverage every night before bed. water and teas are his best friend, especially during promotion periods. “i’ll make you some! it’ll feel nice on your stomach too, especially before bed.” he’s quick to set his mug down and get to work, moving to heat back up the water once more. “you sound wonderful every time, too.”
as he looks over to jonghyun, he sees the yawn, and smiles fondly, before redirecting his attention back to the tea. “ah, i guess so.” he states in faux disappointment, an exaggerated pout on his face and apparent in his words. “i guess i’ll wait til the airing. oh woe is me…” he can’t help but laugh. “oh? how was that? were they nice?”
after a few moments of preparation, he’s pouring the tea into another mug, and the scent is warm and soothing. he smiles as he does, and when finished, presents it to the younger. “here you go~” he moves to retrieve the honey, setting it down by the mug for sweetener. “it’s steaming, so wait a bit. blow on it if you need.” he adds gently.
“I probably shouldn’t sleep like a rock, or I won’t wake up for schedules tomorrow,” Hyun laughs, althought it’s not something he can necessarily help. With their busy schedules during promotions, it’s sometimes hard to get consistent, quality sleep. Sure, they can nap during the morning at music stations, but it’s not the same kind of rest one gets at night, in bed. “If I’m a rock in the morning, hyung will wake me up, right? So we’re not late?”
He smiles as he watches Woohyun do this thing in the kitchen, rather admiring how dedicated he is to taking care of his vocals and body. That’s probably why he’s Main Vocalist, Hyun thinks. He deserves the position due to his hard work and effort he puts in to taking care of his instrument, and shares this care with everyone else too. “Thanks, hyung~ Ah~ What would I do without you~ My ego would be mnuch smaller and less over-inflated~” He laughs, but it’s rather true. Woohyun gives him too much praise sometimes, and it does go to his head a bit. “Although if I wait too long for the drink, I might fall asleep on the table soon, it’s getting very comfortable. I’m surprised you haven’t gone to bed yet.”
“They were super nice,” he emphasises, despite the tiredness he feels. “We should try go on the show together next time~ It’ll be so much fun. But if we’re on opposite teams, hyung, I’ll have to tell you know .. I might not show you any mercy. Enemies are enemies on the Running Man field.”
Hyun gratefully accepts the steaming mug, wrapping his hands around the hot but comforting ceramic. “Say, hyung -- What’re your goals for the future now?”

It’s a nice day outside, a lovely day for a day off during promotions. He knows he could have done this live inside, but he thought it might be too noisy in the dorms... Although that meant that he could also have booked one of the studios at the company to stream, but why would on sit inside while the sun was shining? He’d spent enough time indoors this past month already; it was time to let him enjoy the outdoors for a bit.
He’s situated in the local park not too far from the CONVEX dorms, sitting in a more secluded and quiet spot, away from the main foot traffic to avoid any interruptions. It’s also so he doesn’t bother anyone with the music he’s intending to play from the mini Bluetooth speaker beside him. He turns on the first song -- their current title track -- in the playlist before he starts, to act as a nice transition to set the mood.

“Ah ... Is it airing yet? Am I online?” he voices out loud, staring into the little camera at the front of his phone at the end of a long selfie stick. It’s to better keep him in shot, but also so his arm doesn’t get tired too quickly from holding the phone up a more conventional way.
“Hello~ Hello! How is everyone? I’m in a change of scenery right now -- I’m outdoors~! Ah~ The sun is really nice.” He pauses, a smile creeping up his lips as he reads the comments flooding in. “I’m doing well, thank you~ It’s a day off today so I’m enjoying it with some fresh air, even if I am still in Seoul. I hope everyone has been liking our comeback this time around? I feel like it’s quite a different style than what we’ve put out before... We’re a bit more ... moody? Emotional? But thank you for everyone who has helped us to win number one on the music shows so far, I didn’t get to properly thank everyone earlier~” He leans in as a particular comment flickers past, his brows frowning momentarily.
“What? I already thanked you guys with chocolate on SNS?” A hearty laugh bursts out and the camera angle shifts as he falls back in his seat slightly, clear amusement on his face once everything rights itself once again. “You’re right, you’re right~ Was it shocking to everyone? I’m sorry if anyone dropped their phones~ What was more shocking was Sehunnie, right? He’s worked so hard, I’m super proud of him~ He was a bit embarrassed when we were taking the pictures though. Would you have known it was in the dorms, in the corner of the living room? The only blank wall space was in the corner so I made Sehunnie stand on the couch~”

Hyun spots the comment and squints at it, tilting his head at the username as well. “... Sangyeon? Is that you? Ah, I can’t do that~ That’d be indecent exposure in public~”

It was a while ago but I still really like it~ And everyone’s voices were in prime condition that day~ I’ve been thinking that I want to try do more acoustic covers on Youtube, and sharing one songs that I really like and want to sing. I’m of course sharing some songs I like today with everyone~ Some are new, some are old~ But does anyone else like to do this, just sit in a park in the sun and listen to some nice songs? I used to do it a lot at the Han River when I was a trainee, after training. I also used to ride my longboard along the river sometimes. It was nice, like a bit of healing. It took some stress away, you know?”

When this particular song starts to play, Hyun’s head starts to bop to the beat and he sings along to a line every now and again. It’s a song he’s listened to countless times since it came out now, perhaps moreso because his best friend in the group that released it.
“Everyone knows this song, right? If not, you should look it up! Not right now, of course, but after I finish streaming~ It’s ‘Can You Feel It’ by DE:CODE! It’s a really funky song and Hongjoongie is in that group. He joined us for one of the ending stages earlier this month, and danced ‘Don’t Wanna Cry’. He’s always been a really good dancer, and he’s a good rapper too. There’s this really good energy about him when he’s performing and I get a bit jealous of it sometimes~ It’s funny, though, to think he’s the same guy I used to live with and would wake up with such fluffy hair in the mornings~”

He pauses to listen to this song in quiet for a moment, a song that has personal sentimentality that a particular person hearing it would catch onto, singing along quietly to the lines he does know as he watches comments go by. There’s comments from all over the world, and it fascinates him. He completes requests to say ‘hi’ and ‘hello’ in different languages (or does his best to), and gives short answers to questions that pop up.

His lips immediately pull into a smile when he hears the iconic opening of this song begin to play, the OST of the drama he was in earlier this year. Viewers would catch onto this connection, and probably guess why this song makes Hyun so happy.
“Ah... I miss the cast and filming already... It was so much fun.” He sings along to Hongki’s powerful vocals, trying his best to not be too loud, and sighs. “If only I could sing as well as Hongki-sunbaenim... That’s a dream of mine, to be as good at singing as he is. And to also sing on stage with Baek Jiyoung CEO one day too~ That’d be such a dream come true.

Perhaps surprisingly, a girl group song comes on and Hyun starts to bop in a different way, swaying to the melody of the powerful and sultry female vocals. When it gets to the chorus, he chorus, he tries to imitate the shoulder movements of the point dance, awkwardly from his seated position. There’s also a reason he’s not a main dancer.
“I’m so glad Sunmi-noona got to debut, she’s such a great performer in all aspects. Did you know she used to be at Sphere with me? We trained together for a few years, back at the start. She took care of everyone well, like how she does with AND*ROMA now. I wonder why her dancing never rubbed off on me... You should look up her covers online~ They’re really good. I think she’s one of the top dancers in the industry right now, in my opinion~”

His mood visibly mellows out a bit as he settles back, leaning on a hand to listen to the soothing melody and soft instruments. “I used to listen to this song a lot as a trainee, it sounds especially nice next to the Han River. Aah~ It brings back a lot of nostalgia. Even though it could be interpreted as a romantic song, to me it gave me encouragement. I remember when I first moved to Seoul and everything was so new...” He laughs softly, shaking his head at how naive the Hyun was back then. “It made my heart flutter and I was so excited to try doing what I wanted to do, which was sing and perform. It seems I’ve come quite far since then...”
'sorry for my korean ^^” do you have any tips for new singers?’
“Ah... That’s a good question, Ian~ Are you wanting to become a singer too? Your Korean is good, don’t worry~” He smiles at the camera, an encouraging smile. “I think the next way is... to try a lot of things. Try to get as much experience as possible and build up confidence. Don’t be shy of trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone sometimes. And with auditions... Just go to them all. Even if you don’t pass, try the next one. I failed my first audition too, and it was hard, but just believe in your ability and love the music. That, and admittedly luck, will hopefully get you to where you want to be one day~”

“This... Aaaah~ Such a favourite of mine ... Lee Sunhee-sunbaenim is such a legend... I loved this song when it came out and still love it now. I really want to be in a periodic drama or movie one day, it’d be a different kind of acting I haven’t tried. And I really want to try the costumes and hair-- What would I look like with long hair? I’ve had long-ish hair before, but it’s never been as long as it looks in some periodic dramas.”

“Oh? My favourite sandwich? Ah, but if I tell you, it’ll be sold out again and then there might be accidents again~” He laughs, referring to a particular incident he rememers where he accidentally caused a nose bleed. “Okay, I guess I’ll tell you, but it’s our little secret, okay? And you’ll have to promise to not buy them all and leave some for me.” He leans in closer, voice dropping to a whisper.
“My favourite... is bulgogi. This one convenience store sells it in Seoul and it’s so good. But don’t go buying them all now, alright? I have to eat too, you know~”
honeyhyun: ‘oppa, please say “pogi ako” (i’m handsome in filipino)’
He has to take a little longer with this comment, mouthing the foreign words slowly, trying to figure out the pronunciation before he says it outloud. “Po... gi ako? Pogi ako? Is that right? Ah~ Pogi ako!” He says the last one more enthuasiastically, sticking an old-fashioned v-pose with his thumb and pointer finger under his chin, like he’s seen in animes. He quickly drops it and laughs though, embarrassent hitting him. “Ah, that feels silly doing by myself in the park~ I’ll have to get the other members to do it with me next time so I don’t look so weird~”

“Ah-- I’ll finish the live with this song~ It’s a new band I’ve been listening to, and I’ve been wondering... Should I cover some of their songs next? He tries singing along with some of the song, clear enjoyment on his face as he listens to the music. He answers more comments the rest of its duration, and then waves at the viewers. “I should go now~ It’s coming up Chuseok so early Happy Chuseok for everyone! I hope everyone can spend some time with their families, and eat delicious snacks~ I can’t go home this year but I’ll spend it with the members~

The cast have been very kind to him throughout the day, both on camera and off. Song Jihyo in particular conversed with him in the car as they headed between location for filming, as she was seated next to him while Jongkook was in the seat behind. The first conversation at the start of the day was kept light, Hyun making sure to introduce himself to his team mates again -- properly this time, with a gruff handshake with Jongkook and a gentler shake with Jihyo -- before they moved out of the carpark and cameras rolled. Of course, Jongkook started off the questioning.
“What’s your personality like? Are you more quiet and reserved, or are you...?’
“Ah, usually I’m not this quiet. I’m just a bit nervous being on a show like this on my own, without the other members. I want to do well and not disappoint you or Jihyo-noona in the games, since I have a little bit of competitiveness in me too.”
“You know, people like Hyun can come across as quiet or inexperienced when they have a mission they need to complete, since others won’t suspect him. They can be quite dangerous.”
“That’s right... They bait us and so we don’t suspect them.”
“People who act are naturally good at pretending.”
All Hyun could do was agree in between these statements, trying his best to nod his head casually and pretend that they hadn’t actually hit the nail exactly on the head. A part of him wondered if maybe he made the wrong move to choose this team to go with, but he also knew that it wouldn’t have been a good idea either to be in the same team as his partner in the secret couple. That would only increase the risk and chances of suspicion.
He was rather glad when the conversation shifted to Jongkook suspecting Jihyo though, and the two started to bicker and divert attention away from him. His smile widened as he laughed lightly in amusement, sort of becoming a spectator on the sidelines. Not that it lasted for long, however, as Jongkook shifted the attention yet again. ‘Ah,’ Hyun thought to himself, ‘I knew there’s a reason he’s an Ace.’
“You two look too comfortable for having only met for the first time ... Wouldn’t the secret couple want to get into the same car?”
“Ah, you’re right. Do we look strange to you?”
“If you’re a secret couple, then you’d have a secret mission to do. Go on, quickly do it.”
“We held hands before.” Next Hyun knew, Jihyo had grabbed his hand, holding onto it, and he can’t help looking a little flustered as he turned towards her.
“Why did you do that? Why!?”
“She did it ... just because,” Hyun replied, in an attempt to help Jihyo out of this situation, to which she agreed.
“You’re not the type to just suddenly grab a guest’s hand who’s not been on the show before, you know.”
“...His hand looked soft.”
“See!? Come on, what’s up with you?”
Hyun couldn’t help but start laughing, partly from embarrassment, partly from Jihyo’s answer, but he’s feeling warm around his neck. To think, Jihyo has just held his hand, someone who he admired as a celebrity and actress.
“You see, Jongkook-oppa, I just grabbed it because you were suspecting us, there’s nothing to it.”
“You’re suspicious ... If it’s not a mission, then you must be interested in him. He’s too young for you, Jihyo.”
“... I think it must be one of those two reasons.”
“I’d be honoured if that was the case, noona,” he added brightly, making sure to keep things pleasant but of course, it’s said out of politeness due to the fact that both are seasoned variety stars; he’d end up coming off as rude, otherwise.

When Jonghyun hears his group’s name announced as the winners for a third music show in a row this week, he has to blink to make sure he’s hearing right. Confetti goes off, making him jump a little before it starts raining down on them, and he has to glance at the members next to them to make sure he’s heard right.
It hits him differently each time. Some times he immediately smiles, filled with joy that their hard work has paid off and their comeback is well-received by their fans. Other times, it hits him as unexpected and takes him a moment before he realises. Despite his lifetime as an idol reaching nearly two years by now, there’s instances where he still doesn’t expect them to be as popular as they are. With so many other artists promoting at the same time with just as brilliant songs, he wouldn’t be surprised with another group or singer hit top rank on the chart for the week instead of them.
But tonight, on M!Countdown, CONVEX are the current number one.
There’s the usual spiel by the MCS as the show comes to a close, and then the other artists begin to exit the stage to allow CONVEX their spotlight for an encore stage. And the start of ‘Don’t Wanna Cry’ fades in, an additional sound cue for usher in his tradition, but rather than join his members, Hyun quickly turns around, eyes searching for a particular figure, and he moves to grab his best friend, to stop him from moving off with everyone else.
This is a moment he wants to share with Hongjoong, and he’s so happy that they’ve both made it to this point in their careers where they can stand on the same stage time and time again. He’s so happy that his face is split into a big grin, and as the chorus comes up, he drags Hongjoong to the front with him, next to some of the other CONVEX members, to dance the encore stage with them.
It’s to no surprise that the DE:CODE member knows the point dance well; Hyun has learned the same for ‘Can You Feel It?’ (albeit he doubts he can’t execute it as seamlessly as Hongjoong dances to ‘Don’t Wanna Cry’ like he’s a member of CONVEX himself). Hyun makes sure to pretend he’s shocked as their moves match in sync, head turned to stare at Hongjoong next to him while they’re both on their knees, arms twisting with the complicated choreography that took Hyun months to perfect but knows it probably took Hongjoong a few practices to get down bat. The Vocal leader keeps up the act all the way through, until they get back to their feet, and then the fascade breaks and he’s laughing, looping his arms around the other’s shoulders to bop to the rest of the song, almost forgetting to sing his lines in the process but hurriedly raising his mic at the last minute to make it.
He’s extremely thankful, waving to fans that he spots in the crowd as the song continues to play, and when the stage finishes he gives Hongjoong a one-armed side hug and says he’ll see him tomorrow at a different music station, leaving him with a ‘I’ll come style your hair for you~’ jokingly ... maybe.
RUNNING MAN came out today with a new edition of their popular couple races. The guests of the day included CONVEX’s HYUN and K.ARMA’s KIL. While the cast and guests tried to figure out and stop the secret couple from winning, Hyun and Somin, they ended up victorious. Hyun is currently promoting with his group and their latest release of ‘DON’T WANNA CRY’. Kil recently became one of the ambassadors for skin care brand LABIOTTE.

He’s the last to be revealed as one of the three guests on the show, entering out of a pink door after K.ARMA’s Kil is introduced. He can’t help the grin on his face, dipping his head in greeting to each of the cast as he takes his place in the line-up.

“This is the first time you’re meeting everyone?”
“Yes, it’s my first time here~”
“He’s really handsome.”
“Ah~ No, no~ Not at all~”
“You’re a member of CONVEX?”
“Yes~ I’m the leader of the Vocal Unit. We’ve got twelve members.”
“Aaah, that makes sense, there’s so many faces in that group. But you look familiar, like we’ve seen you somewhere else before...”
“Aaaah~! Yes, I acted in ‘The Heirs’ as Lee Chanyoung earlier this year.”
“Aaah, yes, that was a big hit among the younger viewers.”
It didn’t help that he ends up with Kim Jongkook, the Sparta himself, and Song Jihyo on his team as well, as it only fueled his competitiveness. Or, maybe it was a good thing. Certainly, it was much easier being on their team than being against them, and he’d picked their van for a reason, despite the callings by Somin from the other team; he’d seen enough Running Man episodes (and experienced first hand once before) just how scary it can be on the other side of these two.
It made his secret missions an agenda both a little easier and harder, in that sense. What was that saying ... ‘Keep your friends close and your enemies closer’? Or something like that, as he knew that, if he wanted to win at the end with Somin, he had to succeed at their tasks and leave them the last people standing at the end, and that would mean eventual betrayal of his ‘team mates’.
It was a task that challenged Hyun’s acting skills to the max, but he was always up for the challenge.
The walk through the university was a nice change of setting; the fresh air was much appreciated along with the novel environment for him. As he hadn’t attended university himself, he mentioned to his teammates and the camera that being on campuses was fascinating for him.
“What? You didn’t attend university, Hyun?”
“Yeah~ I came straight to Seoul after graduating high school to pursue my dreams.”
“You’ve missed out on an integral ‘coming of age’ part of your life.”

“Kyaaa~ Hyun-oppa! You’re so handsome!”
“Hyun-oppa is so charming!”
The sudden shrill interruptions made him burst into laughter and he turned around to give a little wave and smile to the small crowd of students (predominantly female) following them towards a building as they searched for the Modeling Department. It only caused more shrieking from the students.
“You’re right. Hyun’s university life probably wouldn’t have been much different from this. He would’ve been popular just like he is now because he’s good-looking.”
“Aah~ No way, Jongkook-hyung~ I’m sure most of them are following us because they’re fans of you and Jihyo-noona instead--”
“It’s okay, Hyun. You don’t need to try to protect our egos. We’ve been on this show long enough with enough guests to be immune by now.”
Some of the things he’s asked to do on the show, he shouldn’t be surprised about anymore, but he does get a bit taken aback each time, somehow forgetting that writers always research information about him beforehand and pass this information onto the cast. When he’s asked to show off his runway walk, among a class of modeling students, he instantly feels the pressure to do well increase tenfold.
“Our Hyun here, he’s a member of CONVEX but he’s also done some modeling,” Jihyo announced, to which he dipped his head in slight embarrassment. “Let’s check out his walk.”
He’s before a throng of students majoring in this subject, whereas he’s only learned everything via on-the-job experience. Nonetheless, he doesn’t show this uncertainty, hiding it well as he obediently stepped up on the runway. The chants of “Show us~ Show us~” egg him on, working as both encouragement and peer pressure.
His expression shifted from bright and friendly to cold and charismatic as he started his strut to the music, his strides confident and his gaze powerful. It’s always a wonder that this is the same Hyun as a moment ago, but it becomes undeniable when he breaks into a smile at the end of the walk and the ice is metled, warmth flowing back to his exterior. He can’t hide the building embarrassment as he quickly returned to Jihyo’s side in the midst of cheers, but eagle-eyed viewers would be able to spot his red ears.
the fact that he gets to promote with hyun this time around is a surprise and a brilliant one at that. when he first started seeing the promotions come out for don’t wanna cry, knowing that soon he’d get to see hyun on a stage and standing beside him at the end of it made hongjoong feel something more than joy. it’s been so long since he’s gotten to see his best friend last.
it’s the long break during inkigayo backstage hours, waiting for the show to air so that de:code can perform. they’ve already gone around and greeted their seniors, so there’s really nothing much more to do than wait until showtime. it’s boring - part of him wishes he could sleep, or escape. maybe he’d even see hyun if he could. that would be the dream.
it’s not until he hears a familiar voice at the door of their waiting room that hongjoong perks up considerably. he can see hyun’s body through the crack and his smiling face peeking through, and hongjoong can’t help but raise a brow when he says that they’ve made a promise. after all, they’ve made no such thing but he’s no stranger to hyun’s little white lies and mischief - often, he’s a key player in all of it. when his manager turns to face him, hongjoong grins and puts his hands together in a pleading gesture. " i won’t get into any trouble. promise, hyung!“ and with his permission, he slips out through the crack in the door to look up at his best friend.
” took you long enough.“
Hyun’s smile immediately gets wider when he sees his best friend come into view, rather glad at he’s able to steal him away from the mundane passage of time that occurs in music show waiting rooms before recording happens. To be honest, it also saves himself from the similar bore of doing ... not much, really. Sometimes games can be had in the CONVEX space, but if they can’t sleep, what is the point?
“Aaah~ Sorry~ The portal through to here from Dream World had a bit of traffic and my winged horse broke down so I’m a bit late~” Jonghyun explains casually, glancing around to make sure they’re not in the way of anyone while they’re standing in the hallway here, chatting. He then turns his gaze properly to Hongjoong, taking in his outfit and styling for tonight’s performance. The choices are bold, and give off a bit of a sultry, mature vibe. Hyun is envious.
“You look so sexy for today’s performance, Joong~ I kind of wish we had your stylists. You get to wear such bold stuff.” He looks down at his own outfit today, which is mainly a white shirt and dark slacks; he has to try to not spill anything on his shirt between now and performance time. “Are you allowed to eat? Lemme buy you a sandwich~”

Overlapping promotions? Oh, yes, thank you Samsung managers-- or would it be just the Royal and Sphere staff? A spiritual higher power? Fate? Either way, Hyun had been looking forward to be able to promote alongside Hongjoong and it was just another plus of the comeback this time around.
He had to admit, he was a bit envious of how ‘swaggy’ and powerful DE:CODE’s ‘Can You Feel It’ is; not to say that CONVEX doesn’t have some strong beats to their songs, but there was just a different vibe to DE:CODE’s song that Hyun wanted to try one day. It didn’t mean he would necessarily be able to pull it off, but it just seemed so ... cool. All the more that it suited Hongjoong, though. In Hyun’s eyes, he’d always had that cool charisma that made it easy for people to fall for his charms.
“Hello~? Excuse me~?” Hyun says at the door of DE:CODE’s waiting room, politely greeting whoever has answered, as his eyes glance through the gap, trying to spot his friend. “Oh! Hello~ I’m Hyun~ From CONVEX~ Ah-- Nice to meet you~ Is-- By any chance is Hongjoong around~ I just want to treat him to lunch~ I promised him, you see~” Did he make a promise? Maybe, or maybe it’s a bit of a white lie; he’s hoping it makes it more convincing for him to steal Joong for a bit.
coming home tonight isn’t the comfort that it should have been. not when the words kept ringing in her ears all day and still haunt her at this very moment - the girl of the month is … kim sua. they’re words that any of the others would have wanted to hear if it was their own name being called, but at the same time, these are words that she never would have expected to hear herself. they’re also words that sua isn’t really sure she ever wanted to hear.
everyone calls debut a wonderful birthday gift, but sua isn’t quite so sure.
dropping her bags at the door, the first and only person she thinks of calling is hyun. there’s some sort of apology in her heart because while she has a desperate need to call him, to hear whatever it is that he thinks - because she knows she’ll be a little more accepting if it comes from him, if he tells her congratulations and that she should be on this stage. but the apology comes from knowing how tired he’ll be from debut preparations - this is important though. and sua’s absolutely sure he wouldn’t have wanted to hear it from anyone else but her.
with a video call ringing while sua throws herself onto the couch, meimei jumping up to rest next to her - she can’t help but feel the pull of a frown when their call connects and she sees hyun on the other end. what is she supposed to do? what is she supposed to say?
“ .. how was practice?” that’s not it. “ i have some news.” that’s better.

Their comeback is drawing nearer and nearer, the days in the countdown now reduced to single digits, which means almost all of his time is consumed by endless practice. There’s still things to perfect, still parts to fix and tidy up so that they can present a cohesive and flawless stage and not disappoint.
(He feels like he always causes some degree of disappointment, though; there’s always something he doesn’t quite get right, even if only he notices it).
But there’s also the delicate balance of working hard but still trying to take care of their bodies. There’s no point in working themselves to the bone and not being able to perform properly in the weeks to come, yet Hyun wonders what hours in the day he has to be able to do so. It’s been reduced to the short time before he collapses onto his bed to sleep for the night, a couple hours maybe where he showers and nurses any sore muscles, or is given a hot soothing drink by Woohyun.
It’s also a time where he can finally reconnect with the outside world, outside of his bubble of work.
Tonight, he’s wandered up to the rooftop again, just for a moment of peace and ... a puff of a vice of his that he hasn’t quite shaken even after all these years. A faint ringing breaks the music of the city sounds and he yanks his phone out. As usual, a grin slides onto his face as he sees the name of the caller and answers; he has more control of his expressions in public now, but in private he lets his natural relfexes take over, the camera lens capturing a full shot of his smile (albeit at a shaky angle, the other hand occupied with a cigarette).
“Miss Ice Cream Princess~ Ma nigh’s be’n made inf’nitely bett’r ‘cause of ya~” he drawls in the full glory of his Busan dialect, before switching to his usual, ‘standard’ Seoul way of speaking. “Hmmm~ ... I almost tripped Sehunnie up, but I swear it was an accident. Other than that, we’ve nearly fully got it all perfected~ Then we’re ready for comeback.”
His smile widens, interest sweeping over his face. “News? What news? Did Jin do a big one today? Wait, Eric isn’t mad at me, is he--”
