showing her to wait for a moment the girl grabs her calender and opens it on the first page. there is a column titled with the word âmonthâ - which is exactly the same word as âmoonâ. pointing at it chaewon looks up at the other one and says it again. before wondering if she can even read hangul.
point in case: shuhua canât read hangul. it was already enough of a struggle to read pinyin at a young age, and itâs not like sheâs the sharpest tool in the shed to begin with. she had always struggled with it back home, and oftentimes it felt as though she was more proficient in english than in her own mother tongue; moving to an entirely new country and having to learn yet another alphabet had proven itself far too herculean of a task for a fifteen year old.
( and, in all honesty, the mere thought of hanja would always send a chill down shuhuaâs spine. )
still, she appreciates the blondeâs effort, and a smile still plays on her lips even as the other begins explaining. âdal,â she repeats, and for once itâs a syllable she can more or less pronounce correctly. shuhua repeats it each time after chaewon, and is ready to do it once more when korean hands mimic for her to wait.
her head tips sideways, and it takes a moment for realization to down upon her. âdal!â, she near shouts, then covering her cheeks in embarrassment. without thinking, she grabs a piece of paper nearby and avidly copies the hangul for it. she would practice it later, at least.
âmoon. dal.â she nods her head a few times. then, she realizes what the point of this little game was. âred moon?â, and she points to the calendar still held by chaewon. âred dal... when?â
