Bellbottoms, bellbottoms Bellbottoms truly make me wanna dance I wanna dance

I will admit that I’m on a huge kick following a viewing of Baby Driver last week, it’s a truly phenomenal movie with an amazing soundtrack.  This track accompanies a hilarious and riveting opening scene and has dominated my playlist this week.  I’m not in it as much for the lyrics but the beat is something to take a moment to enjoy.

Against The Wind - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

The second I hear Bob Seger’s voice, I am immediately hit by a wave of nostalgia.  Something about it evokes so many memories of my time back in Montana and this song is no exception.  This is not a song I’m as familiar with but it reminds me of my last summer in Missoula, especially these lyrics:

Mountains that we moved Caught like a wildfire out of control 'Til there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove And I remember what she said to me How she swore that it never would end I remember how she held me oh so tight Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then Against the wind

I'm sure that my parents played this countless times while I was growing up but my first memory of this song and knowing who it was and actually paying attention to it came on the Forrest Gump soundtrack.

I've always found this to be a song that I can come back to no matter what it happening in life and it always reassures me that I'm not the only person who is going through whatever may be troubling me.

I don't know that I have one particular set of lines that I'd call my favorites but the ones that have always stuck with me are

"Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time Breaking all of the rules that would bend I began to find myself searchin' Searchin' for shelter again and again"

No One's Gonna Love You - Band of Horses

Band of Horses is one of those bands that I've always tried to get into and there are a few songs that I always like but could never name. I don't know why this is but it bugs me.

I like this song, I completely expected it to be a different kind of song based on the title but it has a melancholy romantic vibe which is nice and feels like a tempered approach to love songs that I kind of wish more bands could do.

I think my favorite lyrics might be these two lines

"We're reeling through an endless fall We are the ever-living ghost of what once was"

I like the imagery that it creates of a persistent memory of what was once and will never truly fade away.

No One's Gonna Love You-Band of Horses

Something about the summer fills me with nostalgia, this leads to a rather pensive playlist come June.  It’s not much of a surprise that Band of Horses is a go to for me this time of year and this song simply oozes those nostalgic feelings. 

I’m particularly taken by these lyrics when I listen to this song:

And anything to make you smile It is my better side of you to admire But they should never take so long Just to be over then back to another one

I feel like these lines are a reminder of the simplicity of love when you look back on it, when you only remember the light rather than the heavy.

The Pinstripes Are All That They See - Original Cast Recording

I have always been a huge fan of the film “Catch Me if You Can” but this is my first introduction to the musical.  I love that this song so perfectly carries over the message of the film’s scene. 

My favorite lines were the following:

No! What they see is the uniform. How it fits, it fits to a T. Like the visiting team That the Yankees will cream Pinstripes are all that they see.

I loved this part because I remember that moment so distinctly in the film and how the sentiment thrusts Frank forward into his story (and schemes), such a simple idea that has such huge repercussions.

I love the movie Catch Me If You Can and was first introduced to the musical at the Tony Awards a few years ago and was instantly hooked. This song instantly became one of my favorites, I feel that it really addresses some of the core ideas about how we view people and make first impressions. "Every lawyer's bespoke to the nines, to a jury he's smart and refined
And they see one look the defendant's a crook or that justice is blind" This is probably I think one of my favorite lyrics because it talks about the fact that even in high stakes situations we can still be deceived by looks and first impressions. I think this is also a really interesting concept with the prevalence of image manipulation in society and how people tend to take photos as truth.

Love is Mystical - Cold War Kids

Right off the bat I love the driving backbeat of the song. I really like the Cold War Kids and I'm glad you posted this song as I hadn't had a chance to listen to this album yet but this first song is making me really excited!

"Oh, can't you hear the future is calling For heaven's sake It's either hell or high water Let's get outta this place"

I think this might be my favorite lyric from the song, I feel like it ties in really well with the idea of the chorus of love will give you strength to move forward into the unknown and the future without worry.

Love is Mystical-Cold War Kids

This is not my first Cold War Kids song on this blog, nor will it be my last I’m sure.  I only heard this song for the first time a few weeks ago but immediately recognized the voice and style of one of my favorite bands.  As summer gets closer I look for upbeat tempos in my musical choices and this song does not disappoint.  The lyrics are beautiful of course and I was particularly fond of the following:

Living life with no need for the brakes Something happens when I lean on my mistakes If the words are true And the words reveal the same I come alive when I don't even think

I love the freedom it evokes, the idea of how important and freeing love and hope can be.  It’s the perfect song to drive on a sunny day to, which is what I was searching for.

Sedona - Houndmouth

I have heard this song before and found the melody incredibly catchy but I love that you picked it this week because it made me delve into the lyrics of it.  The song feels catchy while also seeming a bit haunted, the neon lights feel so vivid in this song as if you could close your eyes and watch them in front of you.  I was particularly taken by the following:

Red sandstone it fell, Right smack on top of Sedona Arabella When John Ford said won't you hop on in, And the stagecoach baby gonna take you for a spin

It starts the song with vivid images, reminding the audience of an active history in a now abandoned location and it is so beautiful to imagine.

Sedona - Houndmouth

I don't honestly remember how I was introduced to Houndmouth but it took me a few listens to this album to really get into them but now I'm completely hooked.

I was really drawn to this song both for the little bit of history it offers and it is just such an upbeat tempo that it's been a bit of an ear worm.

I'm particularly drawn to the lyric

"I remember I remember when the neon use to burn, so bright and pink Saturday night kind of pink!"

Makes me think of all the neon lights that come with a vibrant nightlife you might find in a town that makes movies but how they are often among the first things to go when things take a downturn.
