Aftershow parties. Muse were at one point well-known for the parties they hosted, for about half a decade from about 2000, 2001 onwards until the band lost interest in being shoved up the faces of strangers every night. But Matt has always liked a bit of dress-up: so much so that Dressing Up has its own page on MuseWiki!
Matt has literally given advice on hosting orgies. The key? "Novelty items. It's so fucking easy. All you need is masks or hats. Soon as people put on silly hats, they loosen up a little bit. Then you need a couple of friends who are very close to each other. Then people start to bundling each other and it just goes from there. It's as simple as that. Just a bundle tickling and novelty items."
There was another interview I cannot seem to find right now but I KNOW is on my blog from a while ago, in the mid-00s some magazine (Q iirc?) actually interviewed and photographed them in costume and masks backstage. I'll link it if I find it, but here are a few other Muse fits from the 00s:
Some of their attire was also gifted by fans. If they liked it a lot, you would often see it onstage at the next show.
They once dressed up as aliens for a costume party they threw in Vegas with their 2006 US support act, The Like. They hired a bouncy castle for this.
Matt's also dressed up a lot more for Halloween parties since going out with Elle. His Marty McFly cosplay, which would come back to make a feature in the Pressure music video:
Matt's Burning Man fits have also been heavily themed: steampunk, hippie, there's a few. Matt, Elle and Kate did a Halloween shoot as well (thanks so much @snowdinclove!!)
