Max paused for a moment to think before responding. Obviously he hadn’t been very subtle when telling people about his going to rehab but it still amazed me just how far his news reached. “Uh things are going alright. Just mentally preparing for the semester ahead you know? How are you doing?” 

“That’s good. I’m glad.” He did look better and a bit more put together than he had been before so she took that that meant he was successful in his stint in rehab. “I’m good. I missed the guys, I’ve spent most of my summer in an orchestra camp so I’m glad to be back here.”

It had felt like years since Max had last set foot on this campus when he arrived for his first day back. Of course it hadn’t. It had only been the summer but spending over half of it in rehab had done a number on him. He didn’t feel like the same person he’d been when he’d left which he guessed was sort of the point of being rehabilitated. He flinched when he felt someone tapping on his shoulder. Shout out to rehab for the fear tactics. “I’m sorry, shops closed right now.” He said instinctively as he turned to see who had tapped him. 

Vera had heard people talk about Max going to rehab, so she was surprised to see him back at school on day one. Even though he was their so called rival band, she wasn’t a vengeful or spiteful person, he had done nothing to her to warrant that, so she wanted to check in on him. “I just wanted to see how you were doing...”

“Honestly, you’re probably right,”  Nova chuckled. “But for now, I’ll be anxiously awaiting school.”

“You always want what you can’t have, I guess.”

“I do too miss it too, but I expect in a month I’ll be dying to go on another vacation.”

Vera: act like I don't know what? i have no idea what're trying to get at. seriously i don't have the energy for this, just say what you want to say

The devil was back. Rafael sunk down into his desk, pulling a piece of dried gum he had left for himself under his desk, “Right where Papa left it.” He sighed, nudging the person near him, “Got a pencil?” He never knew how to whisper.

“Dude, I’m trying to focus here.” Vera shushed him, not wanting the librarian to come over and kick her aunt alongside of him. Wanting to get back to her homework she quickly got a pencil out and handed it to him, going back to highlighting her history notes.

“Yeah grandma I swear I’ve never been more sober in my life.” Max blatantly lied through the phone. “Alright. Alright. I gotta go.” He said quickly trying to get the woman off his case. “Not a word out of you.” Max said as he pointed to the person standing in the doorway of his room. “What can I help you with?” 

“I’m pretty sure it’s bad karma if you lie to your grandma.” Vera remarked, chuckling, raising her hands in defense as if she wasn’t going to say anything else. “Mr Tepper told me to send you his way. I’m not sure what it’s about.”

“Aww, V, that’s so gay,” Freddie teased and nudged her playfully. “I love ya, too,” he told her with a small, soft smile. “I’m sorry, that sucks that he isn’t taking a hint and leaving you alone. Wait, he’s not? Then why is he like pursuing you and not taking no for an answer?” 

“Oh my god, stop.” Vera hit his arm, rolling her eyes. “I’m done with being nice to you.” She joked, knowing he wouldn’t take it seriously or get offended. “He hasn’t said it directly, but yeah, I’m pretty sure. I think it’s because our parents are pushing for it.”

Miles had fully dressed himself since the group chat decided they were coming over for a movie to console him. Dressed in his white T-shirt and athletic shorts, he jogged over to his front door to let in the bassist. “Get the fuck over here, V.” He demanded, pulling his friend into a hug, already knowing what her question would be. “And, no. He-who-shall-not-be-named is not here.”

At least he was dressed properly, that was a good sign of him not drowning in self pity. She laughed, giving him a quick hug in greeting. “Perfect. I don’t know who he’s friends with but I need to bake them some cookies for giving me space.” She was feeling smothered.
