This week on FYP! - Earth’s rotation
ICYMI we have been talking about Earth’s rotation for the past week on FYP!
We started off by asking the simple question: ‘Why did the Earth start spinning in the first place?
And how has this rotation been affected by the moon over the course of centuries.
But this did not give us any understanding for why the axis of rotation is inclined by 23.5 degrees.
This is where we were introduced to the The Giant Impact Hypothesis which suggested that the Moon formed out of the debris left over from a collision between Earth and an astronomical body the size of Mars, approximately 4.5 billion years ago
Now one of the consequences of living on a rotating object is that it flattens at its poles. The name given to such a flattened object is an oblate spheroid. We understood this using a simple experimental setup:
Leaving all that aside, it was strongly believed by people for a really long time that it were the heavens that moved and not the earth.
It took a lot of debate among philosophers to come to the conclusion that it was indeed the Earth that was rotating. We looked at one such remarkable argument given by Galileo
Having made this journey so far, we finally discussed how humans found a way to utilize the fact that we are on a rotating oblate spheroid to quench our thirst for the ecstatic understanding of the unknown.

Soft things my dad has done
One time when he was 18, he was fishing and found a baby salamander someone had tried and failed to use as bait. It had a huge gash in its side and didn’t look like it would make it. He put it in the bucket he was going to put fish in and took it home, then performed “surgery” on the little guy to mend the gash. It couldn’t move, so my dad fed it and nursed it back to health until the gash was healed. Since he’d taken it in as a baby, it wasn’t equipped to stay alive in the wild, so he kept it in a giant aquarium next to his bed. It stayed alive until my sister was born six years later.
His dad took him deer hunting once when he was in middle school. They hunted all day and never saw a single deer. At the end of the day as the sun was setting, they found one, and my dad yelled at my grandpa not to shoot it because it didn’t deserve to die. He hasn’t been deer hunting since.
Two people I used to be best friends with don’t have stable parents. My dad takes them out for lunch and out fishing regularly, and even though I am not friends with either of them anymore, he still makes time for them as if they were his own kids.
Sometimes I catch him crying at videos of dogs on the internet.
One time he was crying and I asked him what was wrong and he gave me a hug and said there isn’t always a reason. I’ve held on to that.
He told me that if (if) he dies, he wants to die by being drowned in a horde of puppies because otherwise, what’s the point?
He makes sure to say “I love you” to my mom and me every day, because he once told me he never once heard it from his parents as a kid.
Saw my mom looking at a bird, so he found out what kind of bird it was and drew a picture of it for her.
Heard me crying after a hard day and brought me a box of milk duds, because even though I’m lactose intolerant, it was an occasion on which they were needed.
Shows me every day that men who feel allowed to be open, vulnerable, soft, and emotional are so much happier than men who are told to keep it all inside.

Submerged
The first time you lay eyes on her, you feel dazzled. She makes you feel threatened. You don't like her that much. You almost hate her.
You are at a social gathering and you notice her and but you don't pay much attention. You are ingnoring her all this time and suddenly that uneasy feeling in your stomach strikes again. Your whole existence becomes engrossed with how much you don't want to care about her and with a question as to how someone can be so beautiful.
But then after enough time passes, things start to change. These changes aren't sudden. They take their own time to embody her. But then they happen. And you start to like her. She surprises you with that smallest act of kindness or of sweetness or of something indescribable, take your pick. That sweet start, the onset of liking seems so small, but that becomes the turning point. Your heart suddenly wants to trust her.
She is almost like fine wine. The older she gets, the more you like her. They just take their own sweet time to mature. So you are ultimately glad to have had known her, to have made efforts to be with her, to have felt her existence in your lifetime.
Quite a lot of times, what glitters is gold afterall.
I hope it's all just a dream
It's a strange feeling
Or way too familiar
To the point when it becomes creepy
Having finally been this person who believes in nothing
Who understands nothing
Perhaps time begins right when we are born
And ends with us
I hope it's not eternal
Maybe I am the only one who really exists
Maybe it's all just a dream
I hope it's all just a dream
