Robert Clark Workshop

Take Part in an opportunity to learn from Robert Clark in his Brooklyn studio. Clark, a Veteran of nearly 40 assignments for National Geographic magazine will talk about his experience and his approach to the extremely diverse subject matters that he has covered.

The Workshop is aimed at students who would like to learn and improve their lighting techniques and understand how lighting can direct the visual narrative of a story. Guest Lecturers will include Wayne Lawrence, John Trotter and others TBA.

This weekend workshop will be limited to 10 students and will go from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM both days for a fee of $380.00.

This #trophyhead is a perfect example of the preservation efforts made by the #Nazca civilizations. It's believed that the heads may be those of venerated ancestors or those who were sacrificed in order to appease the gods, rather than the immediate assumption that they were the heads of conquered enemies. You’ll note that the appearance of this head is very lifelike — the Nazcan people who made these heads would sow the lips shut with spines and stuff cotton into the desiccated skin flaps of the head. The sacrifice may have been in response to prolonged drought experienced by cultures in the region. The middle to late #Nazca period had frequent environmental stress and the Nazca sacrificed in order to appease the gods and pray for rain. @thephotosociety @instituteartist @natgeo

I ran into work the other day to take pictures of the sky and only now got around to the selection. The sky was full of #UndulatusAsperatus clouds and was overall very intimidating. My assistant @ideaform helped put together this time lapse of a cloud system over #Manhatran that was roiling over the #EmpireStateBuilding as we watched it. A real reminder of the terrifying beauty of nature. (at Ten Ton Studio)

While reviewing images from ’The Curious History of Feathers’ from the Feb 2011 issue of @natgeo , I keep coming across some incredible variations on plumes. This is the feather of a #SuperbLyrebird (Menura Superba), an extravagant bird from the #Passeriform order found in the forests of Australia. This bird species is most widely acknowledged for the male's ability to mimic sounds from their environment, ranging from complex birdsong to even mimicking the sound of a chainsaw being used in the woods. The striking beauty of the male lyrebird's feathers (comically resembling a lyre when fanned out) is important to their courtship displays when trying attract a mate. The courtship display of a lyrebird is just as complex as their birdsong; they create an open mound from the topsoil of the forest on which they sing and fan out their feathers in a grand dance to attract mates. The tail feather above is ornamental and not a flight feather, which is an intriguing #evolutionary trait in that the feather serves the function of aesthetic #sexualattraction to a female, with some interesting workarounds to how looks can get in the way. You’ll see in the image above that the feathers are slotted; there are spaces between the #barbules of the feather, windows that let through light and allow the male to see when it fans the tail feathers over it's body. #evolution #birds #feathers @natgeo @robertclarkphoto @thephotosociety @instituteartists

This #panda was a piece created by #KenWalker for the #WorldTaxidermyChampionships. The panda was created out of two #BlackBear skins, meaning that none of the fur is original. #KenWalker bleached one of the Black Bear skins in order to create the appearance of a panda over the skeleton of #HsingHsing, a Giant Panda who died in 1999. In 2003, Ken Walker won the title of Best in World Re-creation for this panda, causing quite the uproar by creating taxidermy from an endangered species, which was technically illegal to the competition, having circumvented the rules by using fur that wasn’t from the original animal. @melodious47 from @natgeo has finished a wonderful write-up up on this piece and several more if you follow this link: http://bit.ly/1DwVOeQ @instituteartist @thephotosociety

This Rhino bust was from a #Rhinoceros captured in the early 20's. It was unfortunately hunted, as at the time no one knew the damage caused by poaching species so distinct as the Rhino. The magnificent horn is sought after by many cultures throughout the world for supposed #medicinal properties, a seeking out which doesn't have scientific grounds and among other threats (such as habitat encroachment) has pushed the species into a state of severe endangerment.

This particular piece of #taxidermy was masterfully restored from its deteriorating state by @GeorgeDante of Wildlifepreservations.com and is was donated to a museum after completion.

As of 2013, there are only 4 Northern White Rhino left in the wild, meaning that the northern variant is effectively genetically extinct. The Southern variant is actually considered an ecological success and as such is the posterchild for what can be done *for* an endangered species, with over 2000 living individuals.

I took this photo of #Vesuvius in #Italy while working on 'Vesuvius: Asleep for now' for @natgeo I had taken the image while exploring the 'Red Zone' surrounding #Vesuvius, trying to illustrate just how widespread the damage from the initial eruption had been. After a far-reaching survey of the area, it's apparent that Vesuvius has erupted any number of times over the geological history of the region and that as a result, all those who live in it's shadow are at risk of its destructive temper. At a moment's notice, the volcano could become active again and spew a hundred-thousand tons of white-hot ash and searing smoke into the sky, blotting out the sun, leaking toxic gases across the land and utterly disrupting all life in the region, meaning that the populations that have made their new lives in the the 6 municipalities comprising the 'Red Zone' over the last four-thousand years are always to kept on their toes, ready to evacuate at the drop of a hat. @natgeo @thephotosociety @instituteartist

A look at the male Bohemian Waxwing's #feathers The Bohemian Waxwing, as with all birds, has thousands of feather with dozens of individual purposes. I took these pictures while cataloguing a man's collection of feathers on a job for @natgeo and was astounded by the variety of uses evolved by all the species I photographed. Feathers actually predate birds and most dinosaurs species, appearing as single-filament feathers in theropod fossils so early as 190 million years ago. @instituteartist @thephotosociety #evolution

Morning coffee with @davidalanharvey in the stairwell #475Kent in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Talking about family, photography & photo books. When I started working for @natgeo in 1995 one of the biggest thrills for me as a young photographer was getting to know Dave Harvey. I was young, I did not know nearly as much as I thought I did & Dave would listen & talk about his experiences as a National Geographic photographer, a member of @MagnumPhotos, and (a touchstone for me) staff member of the Topeka Capital-Journal (@cjonline) in Topeka, Kansas. As a kid from #WesternKansas the Capital-Journal was nirvana. The director #RichClarkson regularly worked for @SportsIllustrated, and their staff included a Pulitzer-winning photographer #BrianLanker, while the other members had won every award in the industry. This included @roseleen , the DOP for @natgeo , #ChrisJohns, long-time editor of the same magazine, and @jimrichardsonng, a regular contributor to the @natgeo . When young photographers ask me how to make a career in the industry I have several ideas on how to they can make a mark, but the one thing they can't go and seek out is the luck I had to be born at a time and in a place that had these kinds of influences on a daily basis. @davidalanharvey has taken his commitment as a mentor educating and promoting young photographers seriously and came up with an online magazine to promote this.
