So, some background: I work at an escape room, and we have a very relaxed atmosphere. I was told that Adam (the manager) and one of my coworkers were constantly trying to scare each other.Â
I have (had?) two friends I considered brothers whom I used to get in âwho can scare each other bestâ fights with. Recently, they seem to have âdisownedâ me--not responding to my messages or anything, and one of them actually unfriended me on Facebook. I was close with them for a good 7 years, though, and so now I associate âscare fightsâ with people I consider a big brother (or sister). Well, I adore Adam and apparently at some point started thinking of him as a big brother of sorts. I was feeling very silly today (Iâve been in an odd mood lately, long story) and tried (very, very poorly--Iâm out of practice) to startle him. He was very confused and then laughed at me (not maliciously mind you, just thought I was being silly) and now I am embarrassed and awkward and ugh. I hate my Aspergerâs sometimes.
Preferably horror themed, but I miss RPs of days gone by that got under my skin and made me not want to leave my computer for fear of missing something.
RPs that make me say, âDamn, this is crazyâ or âGreat, Iâll have trouble sleeping tonightâ. Iâve been part of three of those ever. I miss them.
I am so frustrated and upset and scared right now. As many of you know, I've been having Mysterious Stomach Pains (MSP) since back in late February/early March. They did ultrasounds (both regular and...*ahem* feminine), a colonoscopy and an endoscopy where they went down my throat, a feminine pelvic exam, and a general wellness exam to no avail. Insurance is refusing to cover a CT scan, but if it's what my mom and I think is wrong, that wouldn't help either. Back in February 2007, I had a hernia that they put in a mesh to fix. We think something went wrong with that mesh (either it adhered to another section of muscle or came loose). Unfortunately, the only way to figure out if this is the case (let alone fix it) is surgery. If insurance won't cover a simple CT scan, how on earth are we gonna get them to cover surgery? And at that, how are we supposed to convince doctors who won't get their heads out of their asses and look for a solution (because 5 specialty exams in 6 months does not constitute "trying to find the problem" in my opinion) that I need this procedure to at least rule out another potential cause. In the meantime, I'm in worsening and worsening pain. It's at the point where I'm scared to drive when it's flared up because if it spasms while I'm moving it could be bad. If it gets much worse I'm not gonna be able to leave the house (or even my bed, hardly). The constant pain isn't helping my depression and anxiety, either, and I'm constantly either upset of snippy unless I'm in one of my rare states of being pain-free (they're coming fewer and further between every day). My doctor isn't returning my calls or contact through the "MyChart" system (which is how we're told is the best way to contact her) and because of how they're set up, I don't see her again until freaking January. I will not make it to January if the pain keeps getting worse at this rate. I'm at my wit's end and don't know what to do. I don't know why I'm posting this other than to get it off my chest, I don't expect any of you to be able to actually help, though prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.
Alright, it's that time! Your resident Harley Quinn fanatic reviews.....Suicide Squad!! Mild spoilers ahead but nothing Earth-shattering. Also this gon get long.
Alright, so first off, basic impressions: I didn't hate it. Surprised? So was I. That being said, I didn't love it either. It had some major, MAJOR flaws. But overall it was an enjoyable experience.
Let's start with the reason I saw the movie in the first place, Harley. Despite her physical appearance (which I've complained about in the past so won't rehash here), Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was actually really, really well-portrayed considering what she was given. There was a scene where she was pretty much a glorified stripper in Joker's mob....boss...strip club? That pissed me off a little, but other than that (and the getting-dressed scene we saw in the trailers), she was in character and not used as much for a sex symbol as I'd feared. Also, her classic costume wasn't treated with the disrespect I'd worried about. The scene I posted the gif of (with her tossing the jumpsuit aside like yesterday's garbage) was /not/ in the final film. Instead, she saw the old costume, hugged it, then the scene cut to someone else and when it came back she was putting on a different outfit. This was acceptable, and a nice tribute. In addition, during the Trip to the Department of Backstory that started off the film, courtesy of Amanda Waller giving a briefing on all the members of Task Force X, you actually see her (very, VERY briefly) IN the classic jester costume. I was a happy fangirl for all of 5 seconds. The one thing I didn't like was that they went with her New 52 origin, where Joker made her jump into a vat at Ace Chemicals and become as crazy as he is. But it wasn't as awful as it could have been-he didn't push her in, he gave her the choice and she jumped. So I'm prepared to forgive that. Anyway, as Harleys go, she's no Arleen Sorkin (or even Tara Strong), but Margot Robbie did pull it off pretty damn well.
And of course, you can't have Harley without her Mr. J. Jared Leto creeps me the heck outâand not in a good way. He's done some weird crap to his co-stars in the name of âmethod actingâ. But I'll set that aside for the sake of this review and focus on his performance. It was....mediocre. He was creepy as the Joker, as the Joker should be. And he wasn't completely horribly out of character (for the most partâI'll get into that in the next paragraph). But he seemed under-utilized. If they were gonna use him, they needed to use him moreâor leave him out entirely except maybe as part of Harley's backstory. He has the laugh down-pat, I'll give him that, though. And then there's Joker's relationship with Harley....
Okay, this was one of my biggest issues with the film. Joker. Does. Not. Love. Harley. Joker USES Harley. Harley loves JOKER. Joker. Does. NOT. LOVE. HARLEY. Joker was waaay too enamoured with Harley Quinn in this film. Youd' think this would make things a little better with the whole âJokerXHarley Relatonship Goals!!â thing, but it actually makes it worse. See, Joker is (obviously) still HELLA abusive to Harls. He tortures her, he makes her jump into a vat of acid, and he leaves her to die/get captured by Batman in the Trip to the Department of Backstory. But he also clearly genuinely loves her, and that's not like Mr. J at all. The problem with this, is that it makes it harder to point out exactly how abusive the relationship is, and will make the whole âI want a love like Joker and Harleyâ even more prevalent. For the record, as much as I love Harley, JOKER AND HARLEY DO NOT HAVE A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. AT ALL. Now that I've spent a whole 3 paragraphs on the Clown Couple of Crime, I'll move on to the rest of the film.
Will Smith was easily the best part of the movie. Deadshot was perfect. I don't know as much about him as I do about Harley and Joker, but from what I can tell, his character was portrayed wonderfully, and Will Smith is, of course, a phenomenal actor. His relationship with his daughter is really well-done and believable, and he has more character depth than most of the others. Enchantress, as the villain, leaves a lot to be desired. She's kinda lame, and has a weird voice filter that just sounds odd. She doesn't have much motivation besides âkill all humansâ and just isn't very well developed. Rick Flag has probably the biggest range of character growth of anyone, and he's not even part of the titular Squad, so that's kinda weird, but I'll let it slide. Diablo was a pretty cool character, and though I don't know anything about the comic version, the movie version was well-done.
The rest of the Squad doesn't get enough time to develop for me to justify mentioning them each by name. The problem with this film is that they try to introduce something like 10 characters in the space of 1/3 of the movie and then expect us to care about all of them, even though Deadshot and Harley are clearly the focus. Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc don't get hardly any time to shine, and Katana is reduced to an extra, almost.
The action is pretty well-done, especially the final fight with the Squad vs. Enchantress. The bits of backstory with Batman make me happy, because despite what everyone else thinks I LIKE Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. There's one bit where Batman is SUPPOSED to be giving mouth-to-mouth to Harley but it straight-up looks like he's forcing a kiss on an unconscious woman. That bothered me a little, but that's just poor cinematography, not the writing, I think. You also need to be familiar with the ending of Batman Vs. Superman to get a piece at the beginning, where it shows Superman's funeral and mentions his death rather obtusely, and I don't think it would have been clear had I not seen the previous film. As far as cameos go, during Captain Boomerang's woefully under-done bit of backstory, we get to see the Flash capture him, and Ezra Miller is gonna be great, I can tell. Also there's a bit during the stinger mid-credits that hints toward Justice League, and it made me happy.
Pacing-wise, the movie had some major issues. The first third was solely developing the backstory of the characters, but after Deadshot and Harley it felt like they lost interest and shoehorned in the rest of the characters. After that, it's action sequence followed by character development followed by action sequence, etc. and it gets predictable. They needed to do Joker and Harley in a solo Batman film, maybe even Deadshot too, and maybe then they could have spent more time on everyone else's backstory and made us care about everyone. Instead, it felt like the âHarley and Deadshot Show, Featuring the Suicide Squadâ instead of an ensemble piece.
Overall, I'd give the movie a solid 5/10. It wasn't terrible, but it had some major flaws. Despite this I'll be seeing it again with another friend, and may have more to say after that.
