Jimmy supposed he’d never figure out what this was about, but it didn’t really matter. Instantly they were back about the fort, and done with jumping. Jimmy let out a frown as Robin mentioned her lack of siblings. He put a hand on her shoulder, affectionately, with a soft smile. “Jimmy know feelings. No siblings, but many friends once. You friend, so…” He looked around them, “Teaching about forts for future friends!”
He released her shoulder and looked about the multi-colored dim and thought, ‘Can taking snacks and picnic… or telling stories, or playing truthing or daring… hm…” He thought about what else there was to really do in a fort. “If second fort making fort war, but no second fort. Can get more people?”
“Alright, I got another friend!” she exclaimed exaggeratingly, pumping her arms and doing a jump-kick so the boy would know she was happy. “I don’t have any food, but... I think two people is fine for now? Lemme get to know you, and before I leave to do homework, I’ll find help you find another friend to play with? Wait, did you say you play truth or dare?! Okay ummm... how about food and stories. Like, where did you get that bracelet? It’s clunky but it doesn’t tell the time, I can tell you that!”

“I mapped out the important places the first couple days I was here. My room, where the kitchen and cafeteria was, things like that,” she explained, leading the other girl down the hallway. She still had that crudely drawn map tucked away in a drawer, the paper now crumpled and torn. “The rest just kind of fall into place - and if you’re late for class, you can just blame it on being new. Most of the professors are pretty understanding.” Except for some of the Hellfire professors…she’d found herself in the detention room more than once because of them. But it wasn’t anything Robin needed to know right now - she didn’t seem like the kind to cause that much trouble in any case, so she’d probably be safe. “So empathy. That’s got to be at least a little fun to have.”
She nodded as the girl spoke, following her weaving through hallways and outside into the brisk air. “Not in my experience, I guess. I can’t control it. And there’s a lot of bad emotions out there to have, but... something that is cool is sometimes I get echoes of things, little hints or memories of something, if it had a strong emotional value. I haven’t experienced anything traumatic -- yet, -- but it is cool to get a little glimpse of someone’s life. Sometimes, as I said. And sometimes I gain strength, but that doesn’t happen much. I heard that I might even be able to partially mimic others’ powers sometimes, but we still don’t know yet. I have a lot of research to do into my ability, y’know.” Robin hurried ahead to open the door for what she suspected was their destination--the cafeteria. “What can you do, by the way? Also, it’s not rude to ask that outright, is it? I seriously just... it’s very new to me, knowing that people are superheroes and stuff. Wait. Does that mean there are super villains too? At this school?!”

When Robin pointed to her face as a reason behind why she wasn’t participating, David made a mental note to discuss that later. Many of the students whose mutations affected their physical appearance often dealt with feelings of isolation or insecurity because of it, so he wanted to make sure Robin was alright. At her sudden exclamation, David laughed. “Like I said, you can come in here everyday twice a day if you want to or feel the need to. Three weeks is generally the time where you’ll find yourself settling in more so any issues or concerns you have should be addressed by around that time.” Not many students actually wanted to come in see their guidance counselor frequently so this was refreshing.
David raised a brow subtly as Robin pointed out his plant. He recalled his recent conversation which contained a demonstration that resulted in the death of his sunflowers. He didn’t dwell on it so he could listen to the rest of her comments. “And it seems like you’re doing alright in French already,” he noted, taking stock of how much French he knew based on what she knew. “That sounds really good, Robin. I’m glad you’re meeting good people. There’s a lot of them here.” Recalling how she knew about the plant, David brought up that again. “So you’re an empath? I know a campus with hormonal teens isn’t always easiest for empathetic students.”
“Ca va,” she shrugged. “Yeah it’s.... a learning curve. But it’s a controlled environment, less hectic than college so far. I don’t think I’ll be ready to venture into town anytime soon. Unless... theres less people there, than maybe,” she smiled. “I can’t control it, it can be overwhelming, but I am... trying to be optimistic. I’m brand new here, so I think I need to get acclimated that still... powers, mutants, the whole shabang is all real... What can you do?”

the man couldn’t help but smile when the girl moved her hair behind her ears, revealing their natural look. “even prettier.” he said truthfully. “just because you look different to the rest of us doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that you are unique and i like unique.” casper wasn’t the kind of guy that was usually good with words but he wanted robin to feel safe, like she was accepted here.
“you may look different on the outside but i’ve been told that its what’s inside that matters and from what i know so far whats inside you is pretty incredible.”
It wasn’t a normal thought for her to call herself ‘unique.’ She had her own struggles and went to school like a normal kid. She’d had one job at a movie theater a while back, but she never thought to call herself unique, especially not with her powers getting stronger and unpredictable.
When he flirted again, she smiled and leaned away from him. “Alright loverboy,” she complained. She’d had friends who were gullible and fell for boys who spoke well. “I don’t know what your insides say just yet, Casper. Take it down a notch.” Despite her pushing him away, she still had to smile at his attempt. Even with the makeup she wore, boys didn’t usually pay attention. She had a bad habit of pushing her hair behind her ears, even after her mutation occurred. It wasn’t like ears were aphrodisiacs, but many boys walked away upon seeing her true self. And even though Casper was less concerned about looks, she couldn’t really trust a boy she met that-day who was already complimenting her. What kind of womanizer was he?

Jimmy nodded, rolling his eyes as she seemed to agree with him. He’d made it large enough, but people wanted to be party poopers. Robin began jumping, and instantly his face lit up with joy as he stood up and readied himself to jump along with her, finding this whole little game extremely fun. Just before he could, though, she froze.
A few voices echoed outside, and he paused to listen with her. Did she know them? Was what they were arguing about important? So many people argued here, it was hard to tell what was important and what wasn’t. “hm?” He asked, when she questioned him. His hand awkwardly pointed to himself, a hint of worry on his brow that only continued as she began jumping. “I–I didn’t–do nothing!” He said, more confused by her jumping and smiles. “I no argue outside.” Before he could figure it out, though, she was wrapping him tightly into a hug and making him jump more.
People here were so confusing! But he jumped along with her giving her a hug back, despite not knowing why people arguing was a good thing, or how he was even involved. He got a friend, though, so maybe it was okay.
She was done squealing, for now. The excitement had overcome her, she’d had a break and the tension in her shoulders had ceased momentarily. She finally stopped jumping, but her smile continued. “I know that was confusing, but where were we? What do you do in a fort anyway?” While thinking, she pushed her hair behind her ears, exposing her skin. She froze for a moment, wanting so eagerly to cover them back up, but she figured that she and Jimmy were similar in hiding their real selves. He had a hologram thing-- some piece of technology she’d never even knew existed, and suddenly wondered how many other students had something identical-- and she forced her hands to stay fiddling down at her waist. “What do you usually do in a fort, Jimmy? I don’t have any siblings, so I never... it’s my first time.”

“Nope, I am from Rupert, Idaho. We’ve got mountains, we’ve got a movie theater, and we’ve got a out-of-service internment camp 20 minutes away, so it’s a real destination vacation,” she joked. Lucy honestly loved her town and the quaintness of it all, but she still wondered what urban, big-city living was like. Was Haverford a big city? She’d ask later. “Get outta town!” she exclaimed, earning the girls a stern look from their professor. “Get outta town,” she repeated quieter this time. “You’re really pretty, too. Hey, can you, uh, keep a secret? Not a huge one, like a baby secret.” Lucy paused. “Oh, and how do you feel about dogs?”
She scrunched up her face when the girl spoke about her hometown. “Is that real?!” she gut-reacted, but then the girl was complimenting her and she couldn’t stop a smile spread on her face. “Yeah yeah, totally. And they’re mostly cute! I’m afraid of the big ones that jump on you though. But the small ones can be annoying. So if its well-trained, we can be friends... Me and the dog, not me and you. Well, you too.” Another shush from the teacher, and Robin’s eye widened with embarrassment, but then she batted her hand. “What’ll they do, give me detention on my first day?” She smiled at the other girl.

“Yes, literally. I’d do it right now, but it is weird and gross and nobody wants to see that.” Lucy stuck her hand out, but not before glancing to make sure the teacher didn’t see them talking in the back of the room. “Lucy Bean. And you’re…Robin?” Lucy nodded to herself. “I’ve always waiting to travel around to different cities. See the sites, you know?”
Robin jumped at the chance to shake someone’s hand, she wasn’t sure of the touching policy here, since you couldn’t always look at someone and guess their mutation. She assumed some people were dangerous to touch, but did that mean no hugging on school-grounds? Did you have to ask for verbal confirmation? All these thoughts ran through her brain instantaneously from when Lucy lengthened her arm and to Robin grasping it. “Yeah, Robin Vigoda. Have you been to Pennsylvania? Where did you grow up?” she asked quietly. She knew it wasn’t good to talk in class, but maybe a teacher or two would be happy for her for making friends. If that is what she was doing now. “You’re really pretty, by the way!” she said enthusiastically, but still in a whisper.

Moira shook the offered hand and smiled sympathetically. It reminded her of her first day, trying to find the kitchen and being led everywhere else except there. A pang echoed through her chest - it had also been the day she’d met Aliya. She missed her friend. “I absolutely can. This place is kind of crazy to get around - I’ve been here for months and I still get lost.” Dropping Robin’s hand, Moira pointed down the hallway. “We’re going down this hallway, taking a left, a right, and then it’ll be on the left. I think there’s meatloaf today.
“Yeah, it... it’s so daunting from the outside... and the inside. How do you find the correct bedroom? I’ve only been upstairs for one class, I hear that’s where the quarters are, but the hallways all look the same, the rooms are the same size... Who knows if I’ll meet my roommates or someone else, haha.” She looked at the girl’s finger pointing and scrunched up here face... “Two lefts? Um, why don’t you... go ahead first.” She adjusted the backpack on her shoulder and caught a reflection of them in the mirror. Two girls of similar stature. If Robin hadn’t worn her wig this morning, they might even look similar from behind. Mental note, she thought. Don’t wear makeup around Moira... Moira... Seems to be open to weird mutations. Very friendly. Possible friend.
looseyfriggingoosey:
Lucy always felt bad when teachers forced students to do to the front of the room and tell their life story. It was such a nerve-wrecking process but Robin (that was how she introduced herself, right?) seemed to take it like a champ so Lucy made a note to tell the girl that when she sat down next to her.
“So where is Haverford?” she asked, curious about that first and foremost. “And, uh, the thing about feeling comfortable in your skin? My skin used to fall off about once a month when I first got here so…try not to sweat it.”
“Um... literally??” Her eyes widened at the girl. She almost forgot her initial question from her heart pounding in her chest. “Um, its- its near Philadelphia. What’s your name?”
