DesignKit presentation comments

Monday:

Devin (Guided Tour)- I liked the video, for the most part. It may have stayed focused on the drive a little too much, but it also looks like it showed a decent portion of the shop that you toured. What if there was some vocals included, maybe dialogue that could play a role in the showing what more is included with a tour? Maybe the presentation could have included more of the benefits of touring (not just for who tours, but the place that was toured). I do think dialogue from the tour about the facility would have been greatly beneficial to the overall presentation, although the information Devin shared did a good job at explaining how a guided tour can be used as a design method.

Wednesday:

Austin (interview)- I wasn't expecting the entire presentation to be just the video, but the video does cover your method very well. I liked that there was an actual interview in the video that immediately followed the explanation provided about the method. I would have liked to see more in person a better explanation of what all is included for the interview, not just having everything in the video. What if more of the interview was shown in the video? The process of using a video was discussed earlier, but we were unable to see some of those elements that were discussed before.

Determining what to prototype Pt 1

Determining what to prototype is part of the ideation phase of design. Written shortly, it is the process a team can go through that will help to further progress design implementation and practice by the use of one or more prototypes in a way that allows for critique and new inspiration. In some ways, this can be thought of in the way that we think of “focus groups” or “trial groups” in that a small group or individual will get to try out a basic prototype that will determine the future development.

Benefits:

Allows for more thorough feedback

Good for quick analysis and improvement

 Downsides:

Can use lots of materials

Making prototypes can take awhile

Prototypes are often built “scrappy” and may not last long

 One of the most important things I believe should be followed, is that the prototypes are just that, they aren’t really meant to make it to another stage of the design process. The main goal of determining prototypes is to find what is to find important details that may have been overlooked in the concepts or schematics. Determining what to prototype can bring to light these issues and anything else that is deemed important. A more refined prototype can be developed later, and this can be a very worthwhile precursor.

Another important tool that is mentioned on DesignKit is to brainstorm after determining a type of prototype to test. This may use some inspiration tools before returning again to ideation and can lead to a much more practical and well-thought-out testing product.

The intent of this project was to increase the amount of people that drink water when walking past drinking fountains, assuming that the sign would increase the output. When recording our observations, we recorded 100 people without the sign and 100 people with the sign at both locations. As we assumed, when placing a sign influencing people to drink more water in the library and union, it helped increase the number of people that used the drinking fountain as they walked by. While at the library without the sign 80 people walked past the drinking fountain, 12 people took drinks, 8 people filled their water bottles. Whereas with the sign 63 people walked by, 22 people took drinks, and 15 people to drinks. At the union before the sign 80 people walked by,10 took drinks, and 10 filled their water bottles. And with the sign 65 people walked by, 18 filled their water bottles, and 17 took drinks.

Guerilla Nudge Pt.1

When brainstorming ideas for this project, there was one problem that caught our attention. One person in our group stated how they see so many people walk by drinking fountains and not take advantage of them, and how everyone's water bottles are empty and they don't fill them up as they walk by.

We started brainstorming ideas on how we could use this problem for this project and we thought what if we put a sign in walking space that influenced people to drink more water. Some ideas we thought of included two different options for signs, the location that we put the sign, for example in the middle of the hall or above the drinking fountain on the wall, or putting the signs above the soda machines in the PHC influencing students to drink water instead of soda. We decided to choose the option of putting signs up in the hallway of the Marriott Library and the Union so people could see them when walking by...
